FREDDY VS JASON (2003). Despite a good knock down drag out fight towards the end, this was just bad. No tension, no suspense, really not much of anything. Can't believe they spent so much money for so little. *

The Russia House (1990), The Constant Gardener (2005) & A Most Wanted Man (2014)

https://s32.postimg.org/pn75mlgbp/JLC.jpg

Final phase of my recent marathon on John le Carre film adaptations. Liked them all but surely TCG was the best here. AMWN was an intense modern espionage tale with a very realistic & frustrating conclusion. TRH was more of a romantic thriller with backdrop of the final days of Cold War era - just before the fall of Soviet Union. Bit aged but Michelle Pfeiffer was looking stunning.

Hope to see The Tailor of Panama (2001) sometime soon & waiting to see Our Kind of Traitor (2016) in coming months. Sad couldn't find The Little Drummer Girl (1984) so far anywhere online.

I don't feel like giving full reviews for these since I saw them days ago in the theater.

The Purge: Election Year (2016)

Awesome if you're a fan of the Purge movies. My favorite of the trilogy.

--

Finding Dory (2016)

Pixar knocked it out of the park with this one. It lived up to Finding Nemo, my favorite animated movie, in the best way.

Everybody Wants Some! (2016)
B/B-
From the guy who made Dazed & Confused.
It's very similar but not as great. But it's alright and worth watching if you like Dazed.

Crush The Skull (2015)
B/C
Slightly better than average robbery gone wrong movie with a touch of comedy.
It's a bit cheap but overal pretty decent. Lot of similarities to other movies like spoilers "The Collector, The Collection, Saw, The Cube,..."
Worth checking out.

RollinFan 07-05-2016 11:57 PM

Eden Log - Kind of like Pandorum with some kind of political message. Not sure what it was, I'm not good with subtext. Could have been better. Probably would have worked better as a video game than it did as a movie.

The Purge:Election Year. Loved it. And to think I watched the 1st one thinking it wouldn't really be my cup of tea. ::smile::

No point to any of it really. Lots of character types and situations used ad nauseam were in the film. The big reveal is 'yawn.' Its fast paced so you do not get bored, but I felt like I wasted my time. Poor acting.

Elvis & Nixon (2016)
B
Nice comedy about the true story behind the meeting between Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n Roll, and President Richard Nixon.
Starring Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey.

En Man Som Heter Ove (2015) aka A Man Called Ove
B
Pretty good Swedish comedy/drama about a grumpy old man.
Similar to As Good As It Gets but more sad.

The First Power (1990)

https://s31.postimg.org/odgotiaor/TFP.jpg

With the help from a psychic, detective Logan (LD Phillips) captures the notorious devil worshiper serial killer known as 'Petagram Killer' but even after the execution he keeps coming back through possessing different people at different time to get his revenge on Logan as well as continue his work...to gain the First Power (resurrection) from Satan!

A pretty fun & entertaining action-horror flick, though kinda silly at times but still enjoyed a lot!::smile::

Ever see Fallen 1998 with denzel washington? Basically the exact same story, much better reviews. I liked it. I'm pretty sure I didn't see First Power. I'm afraid it's going to be too silly.

Haven't seen FALLEN but yeah...very similar story! Just checked out the trailer, seems it treated the concept with more serious tone.

Any reason why you haven't seen Fallen?
It's pretty good. Especially the first time.

Hardcore Henry (2015)
A/B
This one certainly hit its mark. And mine.
Great hyper violent action flick with good humour, proper blood/gore and a decent soundtrack.

One minor complaint, spoiler "What was the deal with the bad guy and his superpowers?"

I liked this movie a lot, but I found that the realism of the POV style clashed a bit with the outlandishness of the main villain. It was like he had walked in from another set. I accepted it at the end but in the beginning I found it somewhat jarring, and as far as I could tell there was nothing to explain his ability, which was an odd choice.

I was talking about his ability. Probably should've mentioned that.
He was a weirdo, but I don't think he seemed out of place or anything.
They could've gone with a better villain but it didn't really bother me.

Considering the budget, it was a finely made character driven thriller with decent amount of gore & tensions. It's got little echoes of Stephen King's The Mist, Roth's Cabin Fever or even the little known, beautiful indie-gem Right at Your Door!

Somewhat like The Descent, it starts out with a tragic car accident. And then some time later, the bunch of lady friends make their way to a very remote cabin to have a visit, a few drinks and to celebrate. In The Descent, it was to celebrate that Sarah finally got over her tragedy, enough to go on a fun adventurous tour.
In Chemical Peel, one of their own is about to be wed; Rae hosts her sister Angela's bachelorette party, and along with a few friends, they go about getting drunk and having a boring old time until Angela inevitably brings up the car accident their younger sister died in, blaming Rae for it since she was driving.
In the morning, the ladies wake up to find a mysterious fog outside, along with a couple of dead birds. The TV reports that a train crash has caused some unknown chemicals leaked in the area and everyone is urged to stay inside. but being indoors eventually turns just as deadly as being outside.

But yeah, surely it wasn't a perfect or great film; it has it flaws. Mainly they dragged it as far as they could with a few annoying characters & their stupid decisions or activities but still I found it enjoyable & worth a watch as it was technically well shot film and the cast delivered a good job. The make-up and gore works were nicely handled. When chemical spill slowly seeps into the taped-up cabin and the sickness takes over and other poor choices are made, Chemical Peel let the blood flow all over.

I enjoyed this. Could have been better but I enjoyed it a lot. One of the better comic book movies out there. I'm a fan of Zack Snyder's work, and if you are too, chances are you'll enjoy this.

Ok. Thanks for that. I'll add it to my list.

Shite acting, and 'humour' wasn't to my taste, but decent twist made it an interesting take on the sub-genre.

Cryptic (2014)

https://s31.postimg.org/hd1kdkzqz/Cryp.jpg

A mysterious coffin located in a crypt where 8 gangsters, dealers and crooks from a same crime syndicate are brought together to 'guard' it.

A pretty well written & executed Tarantino style "who-dunnit" comedy-thriller; even at one point some of the characters were trying to recall the name of a movie that resembles some sort of same scenario that they are in...one of them was only sure that there was "Dogs" in the title!

>>: B+

Fallen (1998)

https://s31.postimg.org/srq8cyeqz/Fa...vie_poster.jpg

A pretty good & intense thriller that treated somewhat the same scenario of Lou Diamond Phillips' THE FIRST POWER (1990) but more seriously & obviously in a better way. But thought that Cat in the finale was quite a hilarious touch to the story...I was just thinking if Hobbes (Denzel Washington's character) knew that there was a cat in the cabin (though he just saw once when he first visited there) what would he do? Every time I visualize Denzel was running after that cat...it just cracks me up!!::big grin::

>>: B+

Wonder why I haven't seen it before!?!::confused::

I really enjoyed the second movie so I had high hopes, but unfortunately this one was a disappointment. Although entertaining, like the first one it was a wasted opportunity of such a fantastic concept.

Funny about the cat. But kind of bogus. If not a cat... could go bird.

Regular ghost story against an original background.
The setting, a decent cast and Del Toro's director's skills made this is a better than average ghost movie. And actually one of the few I like.
