i know this is the unpopular thing to say - but she doesnt do it for me .. i dont know why - she's the type i would normally like - but in her case she just leaves me (literally and figuratively) flat.
I'm not delusional enough to say she's not attractive .. she is .. just not appealing to me.

(i.e. the heroic battleship VS tripod fight)

i'm suprised anyone from the UK would like this film considering ..

Never read the book so dont have that for a frame of reference. I think this film means alot to me mainly because its the first film I really remember watching. The message didnt mean much at the time, it was just the spectacle that drew me in and at the time (I was about 6 at the time) it was a really scary film. I will always hold this in high affection but the religious aspect of it is too heavy handed for cynical wretch like me.

urgeok 03-10-2006 08:15 AM

holy shit ! i thought Wells was manditory schoolboy reading over there !
you really should check it out ..

(not to dispell your personal enjoyment of the george pal version of the film - but because its a good read)

you will come out of it understanding my dissapointment on the vesions of this film made so far though.

its supposed to take place turn of the century england..

they were trying to battle the tripods with the old artillery shells ..

it made for a far more intense and frightening (or it would be if they stuck to the story for a movie)

We were force fed shit like Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Wuthering Heights (which I quite like to be honest).

I am lacking a book to read at the moment so will definately box it off and with a open mind compare and contrast the two.

wuthering heights is a great book ... some consider it a ghost story :)

3 Extremes, liked all the stories a lot. Found Takishi Miike's a little tame in comparison not only to the others but his usual stuff.

Donnie Darko

First off, I should say that Im not sure if I watched the Director's Cut or the original version. I downloaded it not long ago, and the file didn't specify which version it was. Anyway, on with the review. I really didn't know what to expect from this movie, having heard many different opinions over the last little while. After watching it, Im still not sure what I thought of it. While I didnt like his character very much, it's hard to deny that Jake Gyllenhaal gave a very good performance asthe title character. Something about him just seemed out of place and strange, which suited the character well. I dont think there was a single likeable character in this film, except maybe Donnies girlfriend. I dont see what everyone finds so hard to get about the ending, I thouhgt it was a good ending, dont get me wrong, but pretty straight forward. Overall, I'd recomend seeing this one, but I wouldnt buy it. More of a curiosity than anything.

8/10

EDIT - I did think that it was a nice touch casting real-life siblings Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal as siblings in the film.

DER FUEHRER'S FACE

A strong statement against communism, I don't think I've heard; "Hail Hitler!" so many times and it mostly came from Donald. I love this new set, thank God for Borders not selling their overpriced DVDs so I can get the OoP ones easier. I think Straw Dogs Criterion is OoP too and I saw that there... maybe Sunday.

EDIT* Just finished EDUCATION FOR DEATH as well which includes some VERY powerful animation and dark story which I think was done very well. It's so interesting to look back at these films now because of how well they hold up.

And the streak is broken...

Swamp Thing

I had high hopes for this one, thinking perhaps Craven could redeem himself for me. Alas, I should have known it was doomed from the opening credits: Adrienne Barbeau and Wes Craven's names on screen within moments of each other spells disaster. Barbeau has got to be one of the worst looking successful eye-candy actresses Ive ever seen. Am I the only one that doesnt find her attractive in the least? And Craven...I wont even get in to Craven. Suffice to say, Im not a fan. Anyway, the plot was good enough, about a scientist that is nearly killed when his lab is raided, and is turned into a Swamp Thing by is formula. Ray Wise was pretty good as Alec Holland, the ill-fated scientist, and was one of only two decent actors involved. The other was of course Louis Jourdan, playing the villain to perfection. The other actors were awful, however it may have been due to some of the laughably bad lines they were given. Alongside the actors were horrible effects such as people flying many feet into the air after being thrown from a small boat, or monster costumes that look like they were bought at half price on the day after Halloween. In parts, the film had a very comicbook-like feel to it, which I liked, but at other points it took itself much too seriously. It didnt really seem to know if it was a serious film, or a fun comic book movie. If it had decided on one or the other, it could have been a good film, but despite a few good scenes....it wasnt very good at all.

6/10

Thankfully, that wasnt the only movie I watched tonight...

The Return of Swamp Thing

Every once in awhile, a sequel is a million times better than the original. This is just such a sequel! If you look up a bit, you'll see that I didnt care to much for Swamp Thing. This, on the other hand, was great! They decided to go with the over-the-top comicbook style that the original skirted, which made the movie alot more enjoyable. The effects improved greatly, the creatures in this actually looked like some effort was put into them! I especially liked the updated Swamp Thing costume, made him look alot better and more intimidating. Louis Joudan was thankfully back, and his character, Dr. Anton Arcane, was even better than ever! His step-daughter Abby, played by Heather Locklear, was one of many great comic relief characters, along with the bumbling head of security named Gunn, and many others. The side plot with two kids trying to get Swampy's picture was a tad annoying, but it had it's amusing moments. Overall, this was a great intentionaly cheesy B-movie, that you really should check out!

The Crippled Masters
A great little kung fu flick! Sure the editing isn't great but the armless guy and the one with the melted legs are both amazing in the way they fight, it's really a pleasure watching them fight. I'm glad I got this one, it's a blast.

when swamp thing was initially released it had some Adrienne Barbeau nudity. It was quickly pulled and rereleased without the nudity.

the reason i'm asking is that i picked up a copy used some time ago and it happened to be the initial release ... and it (at least at one time) was worth a lot of $$$ on ebay..(it was sheer luck i got it as i didnt know about the censoring until later - and i paid about 8$ for it)

My Neighbour Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki)

this is one of the most lovable sweet and brilliantly animated films of all time,.

I have this on laserdisc, an older pan and scan DVD copy (i recently had it on VHS) and I just picked it up again as Disney rereleased it - letterboxed and voiced by Dakota and Elle Fanning as the two sisters.

Excellent rerelease. a bargain at twice the price.

for those that havent seen it (who have an open mind for fantasy animation) you should get this film immediately. A simple but endearing story, great characters, another terrific Joe Hisaishi score, and some unforgettable visuals.

You can tell Miyazaki loves - or at least deeply understands children and he captures them perfectly - how they move, their little idiosyncracies, etc ..

always a favorite of mine - I'm thrilled that Disney picked this up to distribute - along with all the other Ghibli releases.

I think Spirited Away is the all time Miyazaki classic - but Totoro will always be my personal favorite.

The Weather Man

I was pleasantly surprised by how good it is... The trailer was so vague that I didn't have any idea what the movie was about aside from Nicolas Cage playing a weather guy that gets things thrown at him...

But it's really about his relationships with family members... The acting is great and the movie is very funny when it tries to be. There's a lot of narration of his action and thoughts and they are very well scripted. I recommend it to someone looking for a good drama/comedy combo.

Steve-0: Out on Bail.

Not as laugh-out-loud funny as Jackass, but more disgusting - the scene in PCP Saved My Life where his pal shits on him when he is asleep (and his hilarious botched reaction to this) is one of the crudest ever.

Kids in America

A funny and even inspiring high school comedy. Loved the story of how the kids were rebelling against the schoolboard for dumb suspensions (in which I agreed with the students) and I hated Principal Weller. They should've chopped off her head and put it in a museum for display. Sure, I would've kept Nicole Richie out of teh cast, but she didn't appear to much to bother me. FACTOID: This was inspired by a true story (not my review, the movie).

4 out of 5 stars

Empire of the Ants

A good, campy, silly 70's movie based on and H.G. Wells story. It's about giant mutated ants attacking a tour group. I was surprised as to how good the ants looked. Id din't think it was possible back then since we don't have this CGI shit! And this, is a good thing! Not the best watch, but a good, fun fucking ride!

3 out of 5 stars.

Scream 2

I watched this a year and a half ago on AMC and wasn't much of a fan of it. I re-viewed it because I thought that since it was on TV, it was trimmed down and that's why I didn't like it. But, I was wrong. Besides the F bombs, AMC aired it in its originality. But, this time around, I hated it even more! The plot was horrendous (must've went through a lot of re-writes) and killing off Sarah Michelle Gellar quickly was a shitty idea since she played Buffy at the same time. She can kick Vampire ass, but she can't even put up a fight against a dumbass in a mask. Pathetic! And, don't get me started on that "Top Gun" sing-a-long bullshit! My dick can sing better than that (It's hit single is "I'll Cum for You). The worst of the trilogy!

The Hills Have Eyes 2006

I couldnt be happier to see no other than Alexander Aja do this film. I thought he did an amzing job on Haute Tension. The Hills Have Eyes blew my mind as a remake. It kept much of the same plot as the original. Probobly one of the most violent R-Rated films ive seen in a long time. I dont know how this sick puppy slipped past the mpaa. THHE was highly entertaining all the way through, and deffinatly showed no mercy. I highly reccomend this remake.

There was some brief Barbeau nude shots, of her bathing in the swamp. You didnt see a whole lot, it was shot from fairly far away, and she was submerged to her belly button or so. You see her get out of the water, still from afar, and you can see part of her behind and her breasts. Is this what you are talking about? If so, I doubt that it's very rare. I got my copy for around $10 brand-new on Ebay.

Madhouse [2004]

As far as movies go, Ive had one heck of a week. Nothing that was overly terrible, the worst movie I watched was Swamp Thing. Seeing that I go back to school on Monday, this is probably one of the last films Ill get to see for awhile...and what a way to cap off a great film-watching week! As you may or may not know, Im a huge fan of films set in mental hospitals. Session 9, House on Haunted Hill remake, the list goes on. Well, Madhouse started out like a typical asylum flick: A young doctor arrives at the hospital, becomes aquainted with some patients and staff members, gets tricked into thinking a patient is a doctor...you know, the usual stuff. Until about 15-20 minutes in, it sticks to the formula. After it's introduced the characters however, you know you're in for a different kind of film. I cant say much more aout the plot without giving it away, but suffice to say there are some very creepy moments. The actors are surprisingly good, with no real stand-out performances. The entire cast was great. With the exception of a few really corny lines, the script seemed to be written well. The ending is the main drawback of the movie, but I wont spoil it for you by explaining how. Ill just say that the Alternate Ending on the DVD was MUCH better. Overall, this is a great movie. No more needs to be said, just go rent it and you shouldn't be disapointed!
