X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

This seems to be the year of superheroes vs superheroes with DC and Marvel releasing their tentpoles, Batman v Superman and Civil War, and now Fox has released one for the X-Men with the lackluster X-Men: Apocalypse. In Apocalypse, the world's first and most powerful mutant, aptly named Apocalypse, has woken up from a slumber after thousands of years to find that society is not revering him as a god as they used to. Apocalypse throws a tantrum and assembles a team of four mutants to destroy modern civilization and create a new world order. As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Mystique and Professor X assemble a new team of young mutants to save mankind. It seemed like having God and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse be the villains would make the movie at least somewhat interesting, but, really they don't do anything for a majority of the 144 minute running time. For most of Apocalypse's story, he's just assembling his team while the Horsemen he's already recruited just sit around while he convinces another mutant to join the group. That's not only an issue with the Horsemen, unfortunately. Almost all of the other mutants, Mystique, Professor X, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, etc, wait around until something bad happens. There's a ton of interesting characters in this film that aren't given anything interesting to do. Almost all of the mutants spend the entire movie feeling sorry for themselves, and there's really no good action until the very end. Even the final fight scene gets underwhelming at certain points. At times, I felt like I was watching a bad Roland Emmerich disaster flick. One positive is that Evan Peters steals every scene as Quicksilver, giving a great personality to the character. He was the one thing I wholeheartedly enjoyed about the movie. X-Men: Apocalypse has a couple moments of visual flair, some decent action and clear ambition, but its muddled plot and bland characterizations make it a disappointing misstep.

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

I might have been the only one in the world that wanted a sequel to 2010's criminally underrated Alice in Wonderland, but whether you wanted it or not, here's the sequel. Alice Through the Looking Glass takes place a few years after the first movie after Alice has finished her voyage around the world. When she returns, an old friend from Underland leads Alice through a mirror which leads her back to Underland. She learns that her best friend, the Mad Hatter, has lost his "muchness." The Hatter found the first hat he ever made where his family was killed by the Jabberwocky, and he thinks that his family is still alive, but no one believes him, including Alice. The White Queen devises a plan for Alice to steal a device called the Chronosphere which will allow her to travel back in time and save the Hatter's family. All the characters come back from the first movie, although a lot of them are in smaller roles, but the real standout is newcomer Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. He and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen were surprisingly funny throughout the film and made for some memorable villains. Mia Wasikowska also had a reliably good performance as Alice. Through the Looking Glass doesn't have the thorough world-building that Alice in Wonderland had, but the plot is easier to follow in this one. Along with some breathtaking visuals, Alice Through the Looking Glass should please fans of first film with a fun and exciting return to Underland.

Can't say I'm terribly interested because the first one didn't do much for me, but good review nonetheless. Always appreciated.

THE TUNNEL 2011

Found footage...journalists investigating possible government cover-up in underground tunnels, they run into ...something.

Was a bit skeptical as to why there was a cover up and not a resolution. Not really impressed.

Ouch! Just looking at the score there. I think you liked Future Past pretty well, right? I can't remember.

I can't read your review yet, because I'm gonna see the film for sure. I like to know as little as humanly possible.

The brothers Grimsby.
So. Much. Stupid.
Didn't really need the grossout scenes, but it is what it is.
Despite this, undeniably funny.
Pretty decent action oriented comedy.

I haven't actually seenot DOFP, but they told me what I needed to know to get through the movie. It still wasn't very good, but you should definitely see it on your own to see how you like it.

These two hours I've learned so much more about indie filmmaking and my respect has grown immensely. The passion and determination of these directors/writers to get their films made just makes me even more a fan. I am truly dedicated with my support and with my place, Extreme Horror Cinema, to help support someones idea, dream, vision .... Kinda got a bit taken back seeing Pete Ellott mentioning my forum and our dedication to independent film. Fuck. This is exactly where I wanted to go with EHC. ::love::

I really liked this film. I didn't even mind the 'zombies' were fast and running. FX was simple but very good. I heard this was filmed in Chicagoland but didn't recognize any of the scenery until end credits, parts were filmed in St. Charles, IL..a town not too far from me. Loved the camera work.

TheBossInTheWall 06-08-2016 03:57 PM

The Hexecutioners 2015

The film is not a gore fest or campy like the name, to me, implies. Its very slow. I'm worn out today so I was able to sit and finish it, but I think this is a film to not see. My impression is that the film's creators thought they had a great idea for a scene in a movie and built the rest around that using what they figured was a basic horror movie template. Things happen in the film for no reason. The lead up to the final sequences is a waste. And of course the without a point/gratuitous breasts shot.

I'm gonna give it a 5/10.

The score was by far the best part of this sleeper. Made it sound as something exciting was actually happening, which wasn't the case.

I rented this for 6 bux and it's a comedy. Wtf. Hahaha. it's okay cause it was quite good. The gore was fantastic and my favorite killer was the Taxidermist played by Clint Howard who I adore. The minute the reporter walked into the asylum I knew what was gonna happen. Escaped mental patients that are serial killers go to a FunHouse and replace the actors playing them on Halloween and ..just kill everyone! How fun.

Escaped mental, deranged killers...ahhh think I'll revisit Lucifer's Angels, more comforting. ; )

Holy fuck was this good. It took me too long to watch this. Pure evil. I do have some thoughts. People may disagree. Born like this or not nurtured enough to form bonds with mother/parents. The parenting sucked here. She never seemed to even want him. She was always thinking about the past and traveling. When that baby was crying and difficult, I woulda used all my power to comfort/bond/sooth my child before anything. She seemed bothered. ::mad:: The mother and Kevin were kinda the same minus the psychopathness. Haunting film but I do have to say Kevin was hot as fuck, well at least the actor playing him was. I feel like shooting some arrows. :)

And I had a lot more fun watching Wolf Creek 2 (2013) than expected.

Kill Command (2016) is a must see if you like robots. If you're not into robots you can skip it.
