Django (1966)
Spaghetti Western director Sergio Corbucci turns Franco Nero into an icon (even if it is a "Man With No Name" rip-off) in this, his finest western - unless you like the silliness of the Trinity series. Based on the fumetto (Italian comic book) of the same name about a gunslinger who drags a coffin behind him wherever he goes, Django stands out from it's dry dusty contemporaries by setting the film in a muddy, sloppy environment. The plot meanders a bit and the English-language dubbing is silly sounding, but the Italian-language track plays out with a level of black comedy and brutality rarely seen from westerns of this era. Excellent cinematography, over-the-top violence and groovy theme song make this one a must-see for fans of the genre. In an interesting sidebar, Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) served as assistant director. 7/10 |
