Princess Mononoke.
It's been around for a while in Japan...I saw the english version, with the voices of Gillian Anderson, Billy Bob Thornton, Jada Pinkett Smith, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, and a WHOLE lot more people that usually voice videogames/cartoons...
This film was fucking cool. I enjoyed it WAY more than "spirited away" which was the last film by the same people...I don't REALLY agree with the hype calling it the Star Wars for today, but there WERE certain similar elements.
Good, solid characters none of them "pointless" as are many in such animated films.
Awesome soundtrack, really spectacular background and geographical art, and a storyline that's strange, but very easy to follow. Some great action sequences, crazy-ass giant animals/gods/demons running around.
Overall, one of the best animated films I've seen in ages.

i really love the studio Ghibli films but i think Spirited Away is still my favorite (even over the lovely but more simplistic Totoro)
The animation in Spirited Away is so rich ... and the images - for me - have more impact .... like the train sequence ...

As in totoro i really like that - mystery train/transportation - in the middle of the night when the real world is sleeping.

Princess M. is still a bit to violent for me to watch with my kid so I have only seen it once.

HAve you seen Castle in the Sky, or any of the others ?

42ndStreetFreak 01-28-2005 07:46 AM

"School for Scoundrels" - Classic British comedy with a cast to die for....

Ian Carmichael, Dennis Price, Terry Thomas, Peter Jones, John Le Mesurier, Hattie Jacques, Irene Handl and the wonder that was Alastair Simm.

"The woodsman"

A dark and gloomy movie about a pedophile who`s trying to live a normal life after spending 12 years in prison for molesting children. But his inner demons and past wonīt let go of him easily.....

Terrefic performance by Kevin Bacon. He deserves an Oscar nomination for this role.

Thanks STE!;)

Disneyīs The Little Mermaid:Based upon Hans Christian Andersenīs classic story, it deserves another theater re-run under Andersenīs anniversary this year.
The Norwegian singer Sissel Kjirkeby stars in the Danish dub as Arielīs singing voice, and Ursula is one of the best Disney villains ever.

Just watched Shaun of the Dead for the first time and I thought it was really funny and had great dramatic scenes as well.

never have the film and the source material been so different..
anderson probably turned in his grave when this film was released !!

i worked with a woman once who looked just like ursula.
similar disposition too ..

Yup, I thought the bottle/corkscrew/gun 4 way scene was fucking intense...great mixture of elements in the film, and the comedy in no way fucked up the horror, it was great....my favourite dvd.

Not the LAST film I've seen, but just before it....I saw a Japanese dvd I got off ebay called "tales of the unusual", it works kinda like creepshow, but not really...there's four stories told, each of them turn into completely different kinds of "mini-films", one psychological horror, one sci-fi/romance, one "what the fuck?" and one comedy/sci-fi...but all very watchable, interesting films...I'd reccomend it to anybody. I got my copy for $12AUD, well worth it.

Urgeok, I haven't seen totoro, or castle in the sky...
I'll look out for those.
I was just wondering, your suggestion reminded me of the name of another manga type movie...an old one...has anyone here seen "the casle of cagliostro"? I myself, have not. What I have seen of it looks excellent...apparently it belongs to a series of films starring this "Lupin" character....any information on these films would be helpful.

- B.

I thought it was going to be a all out comedy like scary movie but you're right they mixed it very well and the two genres don't conflict with each other.

If you liked shaun, apparently the writers and actors from that will be involved in two more films thus far...not much info on either, ones called "Dave of the triffids" (Day of the triffids was a pretty old film about hmmm...big man eating plants?), and one currently being called flight of the dead, about zombies...on a plane.
I'll be looking out for those with great interest.

Co-wrote it with the Director.
They also worked on the excellent Brit sitcom "Spaced".

Two.
Both a film geeks dream. Funny as an independent comedy with some great charcters (and acting) and also funny as a homage/in-joke filled fan work.

Very nice DVD's as well. Lots of extras and excellent comm tracks on ALL episodes.

VERY nice package that, it has a few more extras than the individual releases.

I watched dawn of the dean, but I want to see saun of the dead. I heard it was really funny.

ClassicHorror 01-28-2005 07:34 PM

I hate it when people don't realize there's an original Dawn of The Dead.

The_Return 01-28-2005 07:51 PM

Tonight, I rented Colateral and Anchorman. They were both pretty good, Tteral, and I laughed my ass off at Anchorman:D

yeah .. but maybe it looses something in the 'cultural translation' as comedy usually does

Yes, that sounds about right. I guess the same was the case with your precious "Napoleone Dynamite". ;)

Peace

Watched Shaun of the Dead last night. I really enjoyed it. Good comedy with enough gore to keep me interested. Sometimes I had a little trouble understanding what they were saying, but you overcome that. All in all, if I come across it in a store, I'll buy it.

Amalthea 01-29-2005 06:10 AM

The Ring (2001):Bought the VHS version without a cover in a supermarket for two weeks ago.
For me is it one of the most scary American horror movies I have seen.
I havenīt seen the original trilogy yet, what is the differences?

Stor...

The japanese version got a much slower pace, but is much more scary. Especially at the end.
But i liked the story better in the american version, because it explains a lot more what the hell is going on, where Ringu makes you think for yourself most of the time, and is a little more confusing.

Hope that was helpfull informations. ;)

its even more complex that that .. sort of a culture within a culture.

some people here wouldnt find it funny either ... it really depends on the way you see the world.

The_Return 01-29-2005 07:24 AM

I just watched the best movie I have ever seen, and likely ever will. Ive been a fan of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood ever since I saw Fistful of Dollars a few months ago, and For a Few Dollars More shortly after. Ive owned The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly just as long as the other two, but have never got around to watching it. Until today.

It was simply breathtaking. The cinematography, the score...Tuco, lol. Wow

urgeok 01-29-2005 07:31 AM

have you seen his 'once upon a time in america' yet ?

Tenebre (1982)..a giallo ? ...from Argento..I liked "Deep Red" better but I enjoyed this too

"Spoiler"
;) .....some stupid scenes..especially that dog scene were a girl get chased too the killer..simply dumb and not believable....

Angra 01-29-2005 11:56 AM

"Session 9"

It was good and atmospheric, but could have been a half hour longer for my account. And i missed a visible ghost. That would have been nice and creepy.....:(

Amalthea 01-29-2005 04:16 PM

Disneyīs Dinosaur:A Land Before Time inspired 100 % CGI animated movie that looked like a box office succes and Oscar winnner, but failed.

There is many great quotes like īIt comes with a pool!ī, īThatīs what they call a Jerkosaurus!ī and īI am the action!ī.

Yeah....maybe given 'normal' plotting rules...but it still works and is as wonderfully deranged and stylistic as the rest of the film.
Like the conversation we had on "The Beyond" and it's spiders... this type of event was never designed for logical thinking or for questioning...it's for enjoying.
Argento's best film in my view.

Carnival of Souls [Original]

Loved it! Such a bizzare movie though
