Last night I watched Deadgirl (2008).

Not bad. Overall, pretty disturbing, but I guess that's why we watch this stuff, isn't it? My main gripes are that, kinda like Bedevilled, the main characters made me pretty sick throughout, so I had a hard time liking anything about them. The overall premise made me feel dirty for watching it, moreso than, say, a rape/revenge movie like I Spit On Your Grave. And then, squeezing green pus out of the girl's bullet holes and then implying they'll be used for sexual purposes... That is too much, even for me.

On the plus side, the exploration of human psychology and the limits of morality was intriguing. It was interesting to see the jocks utterly disgusted at first, as they should be, only to be goated into participating in the atrocious festivities. And the dream-like sequence with the dead girl snarling and popping out at the viewer -- brilliant. I jumped in shock, and was also left with goosebumps. Awesome scene.

The night before, I watched Splice (2009).

I enjoyed it. Good concept. Sort of a Frankenstein monster idea, but with human/animal mutant experimentation instead of re-animation, and let's just say the main characters get a bit more up close and personal with their creation than Frankenstein did with his monster. Good acting and enjoyable from start to finish.

The night before I watched Devil (2010).

Since M. Night Shamalama-ding-dong was discovered to be a mere mortal, his output has been pretty heavily scrutinized. I actually liked The Village, which many hated, but hated The Happening. This movie was only given one star by Comcast/Xfinity. After watching it, I am baffled as to why. I loved every minute of it.

I also watched Let Me In (2010).

I haven't yet seen the original, Let the Right One In, and of course, watching the American remake before watching the original is like watching The Ring and calling yourself a J-Horror fan. I had no choice because my mom doesn't like subtitles, and she was in town and agreed to watch some horror with me.

I don't regret it. This movie was so dang good, I don't care if the original is better. Great story. Great acting. I was emotionally invested with both main characters, especially the bullied kid. The horror moments were few, but really effective.

My only complaint is a couple scenes with not-great CG effects, but I can forgive that, especially since it was mainly just some animated silhouettes, and not full blown Phantom Menace crap.

I love that film especially the bit where the guy has to get "sloppy seconds".


Couldn't agree more-I too liked The Village saw it at the cinema which I think helped but despise The Happening. It was unbearably bad. And I enjoyed Devil not as much as Signs but it was quite good :)

Mama- First let me just say that the best person to go to the theaters with is the kind that gets scared easily. We had just sat down to watch the movie and something moved in the corner of the screen and my friend jumped and threw popcorn all over the place. The rest of the movie was similar to that with them screaming and jumping, while I burst out laughing every time. Thank goodness there were only two other people in the theater.

I personally didn't find the movie to be very scary. The scenes that were supposed to be scary were done in a pretty stereotypical horror movie fashion and kind of gave away the fact that something was supposed to scare you soon instead of just going for it. I don't know if I'm explaining that very well. Anyway...as for everything else in the movie, I really liked it. There were some moments when you just thought,"Yeah, I don't think so" (like the fact that the uncle/boyfriend got out of a coma, left the hospital and went straight to walking around in the forest) but it's a movie so what can you say? The feel of the movie, the monster, the story and the cinematography was all really, really well done. The creepiest part of the movie was the unnatural movements and voice of the "Mama monster". The ending of the movie has a twist which I really liked and it helped to separate it from many other similar horror movies.

Last night I watched The Girl (2012).

I've read that this movie about Hitchcock's obsessive relationship with The Birds and Marnie leading actress Tippi Hedren is historically inaccurate, or at least exaggerated. Given that some of the basis for the story comes from Hedren's personal accounts, I have to believe that it's at least loosely rooted in fact. However, "Alfie"'s spiral into near-insanity as portrayed in the movie's final chapter, to me, bordered on caricature, and is hard to buy into. Given that the rest of the film, save for a few good creepy moments -- Hitchcock throwing himself on her during a limo ride, his (implied) intentional shattering of the phone booth glass while she was inside, his 5-day marathon assault on her with real birds in the attic scene -- was actually pretty uneventful and not particularly tense, it's hard to give this movie much of a recommendation. It was interesting from a historical perspective, but average as a drama or thriller. As a Hitchcock fan, I may have enjoyed it more than I expect most would, but that's not saying a lot.

Too drawn-out, too conversational and a too-slow ¾th. Not what I was expecting from the name/premise. Brad Pitt has a lengthened cameo of sorts and appears long after (only reason to watch the film, if you want to). I say skip it.

Hideo Nakata's (The Ring) name drew me to this. Guess it just wasn't my cup of tea. Stopped it around the 20-minute mark. If you have to watch a darkly depressive drama, Requiem for a Dream is the way to go. Pretty much unbeatable in this particular sub-genre.
