With anthology films one I remembered was Deadtime Stories. Never seen it but it sounds intriguing. Scream Factory released it on Blu-ray fairly recently and I've been thinking of blind-buying it.
|
M. Night Shyamalan's latest, SPLIT, has proven to be something of a horror/suspense detour within the superhero universe of UNBREAKABLE. I like both films, but SPLIT is really something special...(actually wrote about it on my very-infant blog)... https://www.grandmasbigteeth.com/bla...ter-Be-Or-Else

Just a shame about the final film (Ravager). Definitely not the best way to end an otherwise excellent series, especially after a long 18-year wait.
|
Although I listed Poltergeist II as my favorite before, it's been so long since I last watched them and my opinion could definitely change next time I see the films. I recall liking both of the first two equally but the third one definitely falls short. The 2015 remake was okay.
|
Can't remember if I mentioned The Thing before in this. It's eligible with the 1951 original, the 1982 remake and 2011 prequel. John Carpenter's 1982 remake is definitely the best and one of my favorite films of any genre, Horror or otherwise. My personal favorite of Carpenter's filmography as well, which is no small feat given his lengthly and mostly excellent body of work.
Also interesting to note Carpenter considers it part of his "Apocalypse Trilogy," which also includes Prince Of Darkness and In The Mouth Of Madness. In any event, The Thing is easily my favorite of these three. |
Annabelle: Creation will be the newest addition to The Conjuring series (with the original two movies as well as the first Annabelle). Early reviews have been very positive and it's being overwhelmingly agreed to be better than the first. I've enjoyed the series so far and look forward to seeing how this one stands up.
|
I don't remember if I mentioned them before here, but the Warlock series was another I remembered. I never saw the third but recall liking the first two back in the day, been years since I last saw them. The titular villain is one of the more elegant Horror villains and it's a shame he was recasted for the third film.

Bringing this back with it now being October and the Halloween/Horror season in full effect.

I recall in an earlier post I mentioned Jurassic Park and if it counts as Horror. Seeing the trailer for the upcoming new film (Fallen Kingdom) it definitely looks far more Horror-oriented than the prior films. I recall one of the writers even said it's a Horror movie with dinosaurs and that's the vibe I get from the trailers.
In any case, the original film is easily the best by a massive margin. I feel the series declines considerably with each movie after the first, though I do think The Lost World has gotten better with age and despite it's faults is a pretty good movie. |
Insidious: The Last Key is out next weekend. I've enjoyed the series so far and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the third film, which ended up being my favorite. Let's see how this one stacks up.

I was curious about Predator 2. When I saw it (1990-91) on TV/cable it came off to me as a knock off, which doesnt make sense because it had twice the budget. Overall, I can't say that I even liked the film, which is odd for me because I was really impressed with the original, you know... I already liked the theme and all, it was up my alley. Many folks on Horror.com liked it. I wonder what I'm missing. On Rottentomatoes it carries a Critics Rating of 28% (25 reviews) and 46% Audience Rating from 138,000 ratings. 46% isn't horrible in general, but considering it was an action film for fanboys (so to speak), adding 27 years of cult status, I would expect a higher rating based on that fanboy vote. But I wonder if the 46% is that bump up from a 28% rating? Anyway, when I see it again, how should I appreciate it? What did you like about it? What are so many folks missing about it? Thanks! |
For me I found Predator 2 simply more entertaining than the original, which is also a film I find tremendously entertaining. But there's other aspects to it as well, such as the darker tone and mood, the city/urban setting, the particular Predator in it and the new Predator weaponry and tech was great. I like how we get more hints about the culture and history of the Predator species without overdoing it, something the more recent Alien films are unfortunately guilty of.
|
The new Insidious was pretty good but Chapter 3 is still my favorite. This newest one might be my second favorite though after another watch or two. I've enjoyed the series since the beginning and am definitely down with a fifth movie.
|
Did I mention House before? I probably did. The original is easily the best, although the second film is also enjoyable is very strange and having nearly nothing to do with the original. It's been too long since I last saw the fourth and final film to have a fair judgment of it. The third film is where it gets tricky, with it simply called The Horror Show in the U.S. and not marketed as a sequel, yet elsewhere in the world it was House III. It's decent but I've always had a hard time considering it part of the series.

Bringing this back.

Very neat thread!
------------------------- Friday The 13th - Friday 1 Halloween - Halloween 1 A Nightmare On Elm Street - New Nightmare Saw - Saw 1 Scream - Scream 1 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - TTCM 1 Alien - Aliens Predator - Predators Phantasm - Ashamed, haven't seen any. Evil Dead - Evil Dead 2 Hellraiser - I barely remember Hellraiser from when I watched it as a kid. Child's Play - The first! Final Destination - Barely remember any of these movies. ------------------------- Welp, looks like most of my picks are boring - the first haha. |
The Phantasm series is great and totally worth seeing if you never have.
|
The Jeepers Creepers series is eligible for this now with the third film that came out a few months back. I'm in no rush to see it and am not even interested as the director and his disgusting crimes have turned me away. I saw the first two on cable years ago and didn't like either, although the second one had some okay moments.
|
Hatchet is another I remembered. I recently blind bought the third and fourth movies. I've only seen the first two so far. I remember finding the first one meh and thinking the second was much better. It'd be good to binge all four sometime soon. I hope 3 and 4 are as good as the second one was, at least.
|
Another series I remembered and one more obscure is Xtro. I've only seen the original, it's two sequels are totally unrelated despite the title as well as having the same director back. But the original is one of the weirdest movies ever and feels like an amalgamation of every weird, nonsensical dream you've ever had in movie form. Here's a sampling of just how incredibly bizarre and WTF this movie is (fair warning these may be fairly graphic and NSFW):
|
Critters is another series I forgot, it's been so long since I last watched them. I can't remember if 1 or 2 was my favorite.
|
Think I mentioned Jurassic Park before. Not sure if the series counts as Horror although in a way I consider it Horror-y. The upcoming Fallen Kingdom definitely seems to be emphasizing the Horror/monster film aspects much more. In any event, the original is very easily the best.

The original novel by Michael Crichton is without a doubt Horror. Spielberg gave the first film a sort of beautiful, majestic quality which evened out the Horror aspects, but the latter comes in full force during the dinosaur attack scenes. The T-Rex escape and tour car attack and later chasing the jeep, the Dilophosaurus, the Raptors in the maintenence shed and kitchen, etc. all frightening setpieces. Some may argue it isn't Horror but I always considered it a Horror film in the same vein as movies like Jaws. A Sci-Fi/Natural Horror/Adventure hybrid, which it blends all three of very well.
I just started re-reading the original novel and it's incredible how much more graphically violent it is compared with the film. It opens with a pack of Compies eating a baby. Had the movie been more like the novel there's no doubt it'd be an instant NC-17. |
Yeah I completely agree, and some of the sequels were pretty scary too like the one where in the beginning a little girl on vacation with her family got eaten by a bunch of compsognathus. Those kind of scenes were pretty shocking to me as a kid.
It kind of reminded me of the movie Independence Day. I don't think that movie was meant to be 100% horror but it had some pretty scary scenes like when the spaceships started blowing up the cities and when you saw one of the aliens attacking and killing the scientists. |
more sequels
If you count the original Frankenstein movies as a series, I would have to say that even though Frankenstein an excellent movie, Bride of Frankenstein is better. Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius is a trip!
I have observed before that the problem with sequels is that they get crummier and crummier until you forget how good the first one was. If they gave titles to sequels now the way they did in the 1930s, it would be Chucky, Bride of Chucky, Son of Chucky, Ghost of Chucky, Ma and Pa Kettle meet Chucky, etc. When the studios began to make movies like Freddy vs. Jason, they were doing what Universal did when its cycle of horror movies was beginning to run out of steam, e.g., Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man |

That scene is at the beginning of The Lost World. And a similar scene happens early on in the original novel. The novel is outright horrific at times with it's violence, including when a baby is eaten by a pack of Compies and Nedry's death, where he's disemboweled by the Dilophosaurus. Great as the T-Rex attack in the film is, I felt it was arguably more effective in the novel and there's also the excellent T-Rex river raft chase in the novel, a sequence sadly not yet adapted in the films. I do think the film is better overall, but the novel is absolutely worth a read as well. Funny you mention Independence Day, as I always felt the alien autopsy scene is where the film went into Horror territory. What are your picks for the series listed before? Your favorite movie in each? |
Quote:
Carrie: The first one (obviously) Children of the Corn: The first one Child's Play: Bride of Chucky Ju-On The Grudge: The second one (talking about the original Japanese movies) The Ring: The first one (the American remake version) Pumpkinhead: The first one The Blair Witch Project: The first one Jeepers Creepers: The first one George Romero's zombie movies: Day of the Dead (basically the third one) The Return of the Living Dead movies: The first one The Leprechaun Movies: The third one |
Good choices and listings, I forgot some of those series. Which of the ones in the origina post have you seen or not yet?
|
I think of all the ones in the first post the only ones I haven't seen are the Saw movies. I've seen just about the rest of those movies at least once.
|
I've seen most of the major Horror series although there's a few I either haven't seen, not seen all of or haven't seen in many years.
Of the other series, which would you say as your favorite in each series? Most of mine in the original post are largely still the same, just with a few slight differences since then. Here was my updated list from a few posts back: Friday The 13th - The Final Chapter Halloween - 1978 Original A Nightmare On Elm Street - New Nightmare Saw - Saw II Scream - Original Evil Dead - Evil Dead II Phantasm - Phantasm II Alien - Aliens Predator - Predator 2 Hellraiser - Original Child's Play - Original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 2003 Remake Final Destination - Original Insidious - Chapter 3 The Conjuring - The Conjuring 2 The Purge - Anarchy Paranormal Activity - Original Hannibal Lecter - The Silence Of The Lambs Puppet Master - Puppet Master 4 Maniac Cop - Maniac Cop 2 Romero's Living Dead - Day Of The Dead (1985) Return Of The Living Dead - Part II Poltergeist - Poltergeist II Jurassic Park - Original Jaws - Original Cube - Original Tremors - Original Leprechaun - Original Blade - Blade II Wishmaster - Original Warlock - Undecided between either of the first two Amityville - Only seen the original, remake and It's About Time Resident Evil - Seen the first two, need to see the rest to make fair judgment |
Forgot Re-Animator from that list, haven't seen Beyond Re-Animator yet. The original is among my favorite Horror films and I also quite enjoyed Bride Of Re-Animator when I watched it for the first time last Halloween. I'll check out Beyond when it hits Blu-ray next month.
