but its true ... there isn't punk anymore - i stand behind that 100%

calling what passes for punk today as 'punk' is like calling what passes for RnB today as 'RnB'

two distinct periods of music that stood for a lot more than just a look and a sound - that are long past.... unfortunately.

green day is about as 'punk' as The Monkees.

actually - less so.

You've heard some of my songs. You can tell how much I'm influenced by punk. I wouldn't call myself punk because now aday's its a horrible label and trendy.

PUNK IS DEAD. Its been dead for 20 years.

You're right Green day is as hard as the fuckin' Monkees. maybe little less...

I love Minor Threat, The Clash, Fugazi (not really called punk), The Ramones, Sometimes the Sex pistols. Too me thats all real punk for the era

We'll never get anywhere with this.
Why not just enjoy what you like listening to without having to label everything?
No one wrote a book on punk back in '76. The Ramones sang songs about movies. MOVIES!!! And everyone will agree that they were punk but there was no rebellion or political angle. They were just doing what they liked.

But I've probably just opened a new can of worms, haven't I?

by the way...I like the Monkees too.

What the Ramones did was indeed a rebellion .. the same rebellion that the sex pistols waged in the UK.
It was a musical rebellion - back to rock and roll - fuck disco and the music that was high-tech soulless nonsense.
That was the real revolution - purely musical - back to grassroots.

and - i like the monkees too. and i like disco for that matter .

Post Sex Pistols i listened to the Dead Kennedys, DOA, Black Flag, Crass, bands like that ... (i never thought of the Clash as punk at all - maybe close on the 1st album - but they quickly became a ska band)

What passes for punk at this day and age is rediculuous .. at least the top 30 bands that people keep mentioning here.

I think there are still bands that are trying very hard to capture the origional punk look and feel .. but that is pretty much a direct copy - therefore serious unorigionality - therefore not punk... which was all about breaking the mould of what was happening musically back in the mid-late 70's.

and why are we discussing it ... because it's interesting ... gets people thinking.
why do we discuss anything here ?

For what it's worth - I think the Sex Pistols were one of the greatest bands of all times. I like the Ramones a lot - but the Pistols were miles above.
