In Order of Disappearance: I lost access to US Netflix a few weeks back and haven't been bothered to get it back yet, so not sure if this one is on the US site, but well worth a watch if you can get hold of it. Decent Norwegian revenge/ black comedy flick starring Stellan Skarsgård (the Dr dude from Thor/ Avengers). Little bit of a Coen Brothers feel to it, but done in a unique way. Give it a watch if you get chance, well worth it.

Sounds interesting, I will watch it if I have access to it.

Nurse was terrible... I had high hopes when I read it, thought at least I would get some good nudity out of it. It was bad though, I love bad movies but this one was really really bad. The head chick was one of the worst actresses I have ever seen.

I didn't love it either, but a lot of people seemed to like it. I agree, Paz de la Huerta was terrible, but the other good-guy main chick was alright. The story was painfully cliche, but some of the gore was pretty good.

There where some decent deaths. I also agree that the Hero/Good Guy chick wasn't bad. But I just had such a hard time getting passed the horrible job put forth by De La Huerta. But you know, not everything is for everyone. This one definitely was not for me.

Mistress_Rizzie 05-12-2015 09:59 PM

All of the Leprechaun movies are on Netflix, apparently. LOL.

Giganticface 05-13-2015 08:38 AM

I just noticed they have Late Phases - another one from last year that's worth watching.

Also, one I've been wanting to see and just noticed is on Netflix: Extraterrestrial.

If its the 2014, its fairly bad. I could not finish it.

I'll check out Late Phases.

Completely agree, it became background noise for me.

Giganticface 05-28-2015 07:50 PM

Zombeavers - I didn't love it as much as some did, but it's good fun. Creature flick that pays tribute to the slasher formula, but it can't seem to decide how tongue-in-cheek that homage is.

[REC]4 - It's been there a couple weeks but I thought I'd mention it. Disappointing compared to the first two, and not zom-com like the third. Straight action horror, but worth a watch if you like that kind of thing.

With how bad the characters, story, and puppets were, it felt more like it was poking fun rather than paying tribute. Although that may just be me.

And how do you define 'slasher'? I'm not trying to sound smart, I'm fairly new to these terms. I always thought a madman with a weapon going after horny teens was pretty much a slasher flick.

Zombeavers is a creature flick, so not really a slasher, but follows a slasher formula. Different definitions of the formula have been written about, some very strict and some more flexible, but the slasher subgenre is the only one that intentionally seems to adhere to a repeatable structure -- so repeatable that the movie Scream satired the subgenre by calling out the formula in its script. (As a side note, the film also adhered to the formula it was satirizing, thus also being an actual slasher film, kicking off the "meta horror" trend.)

The most detailed description of the formula that I know of was described by Vera Dika, and is included in this wiki in the "Definition" section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slasher_film#Definition

I'm not nearly as strict about it, and would call anything that follows a handful of those items a slasher. That most typically might include:

- The bad guy has a back story
- The bad guy is stylized or iconic, not just a regular person
- The goods guys are a group of people
- The goods guys ignore a warning
- The goods guys do some other immoral stuff, have sex, or maybe just act like jerks
- The goods guys get picked off one by one by the bad guy (and maybe some ancillary characters also get killed along the way)
- Usually there's a final girl

Quote:

That definition is pretty solid -- I agree with it. Regarding the "formula", however, there are a number of films that aren't technically slashers because there's no madman with a weapon, but they follow the formula to a large degree. Examples include Alien, Jaws and Final Destination.

Just watched Missionary (2013). Not bad for a low budget, creepy stalker thriller. You might not like it if you're Mormon.

Giganticface 06-13-2015 11:27 PM

Nightcrawler is on Netflix. Been looking forward to seeing this one.

I would say it's good but a little overrated. Jake Gyllenhaal's assistant is aggravating.

Roiffalo 06-26-2015 03:31 PM

Geez I'm glad I came across a list of movies leaving this month. Just in time to catch a few on my list before they're gone. I want to make this a monthly or so thing so people know what's leaving and can watch the movies they want to before they're gone.

Texas Chainsaw is leaving June 29th! Get that in if you have a mighty need.
Leaving June 30th:
- Godzilla (1998)
- Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
Full list: http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/leav...-in-june-2015/

Leaving in July: http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/leav...-in-july-2015/

So much leaving that I want to watch and I have to work this weekend. fml

Thanks for the heads up! It's annoying that the mobile and connected device apps down have a way to see when movies are expiring. This is helpful.

You're very welcome! Wish I had found it sooner actually. One of the shows is leaving that I want to watch and I have less than 5 days to watch the 3 seasons >.>

Roiffalo 07-02-2015 03:29 PM

Coming to Netflix!

Saw V is coming, hopefully among more horror. I already found Scary Movie and can't wait to watch it again. See the full list for more: http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/comi...eases-preview/

And for the UK http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/comi...-2015-preview/

Recently in the mood for a [Rec] marathon and I was able to watch 3 & 4 on Netflix. I haven't found much interesting stuff on there lately; been finding a lot more gems on YouTube.

Roiffalo 07-31-2015 03:28 PM

Nothing really much of note leaving on Netflix this month that's of interest to me. The Raven (2012) will be leaving on the 6th, and as far as I can tell that's about the only horror related thing I can see (only one on my list anyway). Here's the full list though if you're interested:

http://www.whats-on-netflix.com/leav...n-august-2015/

Roiffalo 08-31-2015 02:51 PM

I can't start a news post without first mentioning the loss that is Wes Craven's passing. If you feel like a marathon, Netflix has a few titles to assist you.

As mentioned by Hammer in Wes's topic, Netflix has several of the classics, but a few lesser known titles too.

Scream (1, 2, & 3)
The Hills Have Eyes 2
Nightmare on Elm Street
NoES Freddy's Revenge
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Cursed
Music of the Heart (non-horror by the looks of it)
Vampire in Brooklyn

Available for renting:
- Red Eye
- Pulse

Would that be work as in, your new job? The one you were so excited to be offered? I hope so!

ChronoGrl 09-09-2015 08:21 AM

Not yet, but thanks for asking! ::cool::

I've officially accepted the job but there's some drama in regards to my start date... My new manager wants it to be the 14th but my current manager wants it to be the 28th... I'm just going to let them fight it out.

If it were at a different company I'd already be gone. heh heh

Repo'd 09-09-2015 08:49 AM

Ugh. Drama is the opposite of fun. At least it's the kind of drama you can step away from and let the bosses slug it out. Happy to know you'll be at the new position no matter the start date. Best of luck to you at the new job!

Raised in isolation? You mean, like locked in a basement?
