I'm not sure if I necessarily agree that horror is a subset of exploitation per se, but I think that, at times, the two are inextricably bound (pun intended).

If we take a look at iconic horror movies like I Spit On Your Grave and Last House on the Left, for example, they are absolute exploitation flicks; which is exactly what makes them horror.

Miike himself, one of the more well-know Japanese directors within the (horror) genre excels at exploitation: Audition, Visitor Q, Ichi the Killer, Imprint; he uses exploitation and discomfort to create genuinely horrifying films.

i would think those are two of the best possible examples of exploitation

(depending on your definition of exploitation i guess)

i'm thinking along the lines as exploiting our baser emotions ...with over the top graphic violence.

in both these particular cases - religion is exploited for our enjoyment.

i suppose the real definition of exploitation suggests grittier more cheaply made quickie flicks - i guess i have a broader definition for myself.

One example which will end this entire horror-exploitation debate...

Night of the Living Dead.

Just make sure you send me nominations of judges you think will be great for this project. I still hope Angra will accept to being a judge as I think he has a ton of knowledge in the genre and who knows, maybe he'll be able to convince the other judges about certain flicks...

I have 15 lists so far, keep em' coming.

Thats pretty much how I'd class an exploitation film. But I do see where your coming from in regards to The Exorcist and The Omen.

I think it's bullshit that we're adding exploitation movies to the horror list just because we haven't watched enough good asian horror movies to fill out a top 100.
Instead why not just settle with an asian horror top 50 compilation?
Or wait half a year with this list and let some of us asian horror nuts look for more good titles to add. I mean, what's the hurry?
We can always make a HDC Asian exploitation top 20/30/40whatever compilation.

Actually, I think Angra brings up a really good point. Obviously most people here don't watch as much Asian horror to come up with 100 movies, so I think narrowing it down to only 50 is a good idea instead of trying to include it with exploitation.
I also think maybe doing a separate exploitation would be a good idea, I could probably come up with more exploitation than horror for asia. Plus this would be better than trying to force them together. Not everyone who is looking at a horror list may want to see a bunch of exploitation there and vice versa.

Good idea indeed. :)

Personally I have no objection to consider exploitation/drama/thriller/revenge films as a Horror as long they have at least some kinda appeal to be a Horror film or have enough potentiality to be a part of the international horror premises; though I'm not recommending any exploitation movies.

BUT, I here eagerly requesting to name the title of this list as only "Horror" like it was before...The HDC Top 100 Asian Horror.

My list is almost complete, I'll send it within few hours to Des.

roshiq 03-01-2009 09:35 AM

I have already sent my list to Des.

But I like to recommend some other movies that I haven't seen yet but read some pretty good reviews and ratings on different movie sites that I think may have the quality & potentiality to be enlisted in this Top 100 somewhere:

Ugestu Mongatari (1953)
Jigoku (1960)
Matango (1963)
Woman in the Dunes (1964)
A Chinese ghost story (1987)
Evil Dead Trap (1988)
Men behind the sun (1988)
Tetsuo, the Iron Man (1989)
The Untold Story (1993)
Nang Nak (1995)
Cure (1997)
Tell me something (1999)
Séance (2000)
Uzumaki (2000)
Ichi the killer (2001)

Just an update, I'll have a compiled list up in a few days, and we'll talk about judges then as well. :)

Despare 03-05-2009 04:30 AM

Alright, quick update, I'll have a list of (possible) judges up on Sunday along with a list to PM them if they accept. I've gone through all the lists and counted the number of votes for movies nominated multiple times. I do need anybody who suggested Wicked City to PM me (except Zwoti who was clear) and tell me if they meant live action or anime. Thanks!

EDIT: Little Otik is Czech and not Asian. :)

Another EDIT: 232 movie nominations.

Despare 03-07-2009 09:50 AM

Let's face it, nobody has seen all of the nominated flicks, that's why we need a good group of judges with varied knowledge. I think you guys nominated the perfect crew. Provided they accept, here are your judges.

Angra
Chronogirl
Roshiq (accepted)
Papillon Noir (accepted)
Zwoti
The Flayed One (accepted)
Despare (accepted)
