"Billy The Kid" (1941)
-Robert Taylor Highly fictionalized, Highly romanticized look at the Kid's life and the Lincoln County Wars. There is about half a teaspoon of fact in this film and the rest is Hollywood B.S... but surprisingly it's not a bad movie at all. Just a fun, enjoyable western. The only major problem I had with the film is that star Robert Taylor was about 30 years old when he played "The Kid" but he does a good job. |
"The Law vs Billy The Kid" (1954)
- Scott Brady Yet another look at the life of Billy and the Lincoln County Wars. Unlike the 1941 film (with Robert Taylor) this film gets a few of the historical facts right, but for the most part it's just another low budget action film. Like the 1941 film this movie has a Billy who looks to about 30 years old. Not much of a "Kid". Plenty of western action, an okay story and some decent acting. Watchable, but forgettable. (Holy Shit ! This is my 1000th post!) |

"South Of Heaven, West Of Hell" (2000)
-Dwight Yokam Absolutely one of the worst western films I have ever seen. Boring, badly acted, foul mouthed and makes no sense at all. Other then some beautiful scenery, this film is a complete waste of time. |
"Monte Walsh" (1970)
-Lee Marvin, Jack Palance IMDB:An aging cowboy realizes that the West he knew and loved will soon be no more--and that there will be no room for him, either Phantom's Review: Well written and very well acted character study, While this film is light on action it more than makes up for it with excellent performances by it's stars. A fine film. (The Tom Selleck remake is pretty good too.) |
Wagon Master" (1950)
- Ben Johnson, Harry Carrey jr. Ward Bond Plot Synopsis: IMDB: A group of Mormons hoping to found a new colony in the trackless San Juan River country hire horse traders Travis and Sandy as wagonmaster and guide. One attraction for Sandy is "redheaded gal" Prudence. Soon they're joined by Doc Hall's broken down medicine show, with "scarlet women" Denver and Fleuretty. Then the Clegg boys, slightly psycho outlaws, decide a Mormon wagon train will make ideal camouflage. Phantom's Review: While not one of John Ford's classics, this is still an entertaining little movie. Nice performances by stars Johnson and Carrey Jr, and a terrific job by the great Ward Bond. Plenty of action and fun. "Gunsmoke" fans may want to see this film to see a very young James Arness as one of the villains. |
"Appaloosa"(2008)
-Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen Plot Synopsis: IMDB New Mexico.Territory.1882. Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are itinerant lawmen, hired by desperate towns as marshal and deputy. The city fathers of Appaloosa hire them after Randall Bragg, a newly-arrived rancher with money and a gang of thugs, disrupts commerce and kills three local lawmen. Cole and Hitch contrive to arrest Bragg and bring him to trial, but hanging him proves difficult. Meanwhile, a widow has arrived in town, Allison French, pretty, refined, and good-natured. Virgil falls hard, and it seems mutual, but there may be more to Allie than meets the eye. Phantom's Review: I loved this movie ! Great acting from all the stars, beautifully filmed and a nice balance of action and humor. A wonderful western. |

"Saddle The Wind" (1958)
-Robert Taylor Plot Synopsis: IMDB Steve Sinclair (Robert Taylor) is a world a world-weary former gunslinger, now living as a peaceful cattle rancher. Things go wrong when his wild younger brother Tony (John Cassavetes) arrives on the scene with his new fiancee, a former saloon girl named Joan Blake (Julie London) and a tricked up six shooter. Phantoms Review: Even thought the plot is not that original, this is a well made and very well acted film. Some good action and scenery and an enjoyable screenplay by Rod Serling. |
