I have FINALLY completed the vengeance trilogy by watching Lady Vengeance last night.
Every movie that I watch by him just punctuates the fact that Chan-wook Park is a cinematic God.
I thought that Lady Vengeance was brilliant - He has an absolute knack for creating truly tragic characters. What was interesting about this installment in the Trilogy is that the character Geum-ja Lee is just as much an instrument/medium for Vengeance as a vengeance-driven individual. I think that Chan-wook Park took an even different look at vengeance and evolved the concept to a new level.
In terms of ranking the movies, I'm having a difficult time doing so; Part of me looks at Mr. Vengeance as being my favorite of the three, though Old Boy is so beautifully tortured and disturbing I can't count it out. As to where Lady Vengeance fits, I would say that its theme is more similar to Mr. Vengeance than Old Boy, but I'm not sure if I'd necessarily rank it higher.
Regardless, Chan-wook Park is one of my absolute favorite directors and Lady Vengeance gets an A+.
Have you guys seen Chan-wook Park's other movies? Any recommendations? The only other one I've seen is "Cut," his installment of Three... Extremes.
