Last night, I (re)watched Dead Ringers. Brilliant, brilliant film. Jeremy Irons gives the performance of his career, and Cronenberg's direction proves that he is one of the greatest living filmmakers, and certainly the greatest North American one.

I haven't watched a movie in almost two weeks.......been watching LOST on DVD.
I really hate getting caught up in TV shows.....but this one did it.....last time i was so involved was Twin Peaks.

The_Return 09-29-2005 06:01 PM

Ive been thinking about checking that boxset out. Looks like a damn cool show, but I hate trying to follow stuff on TV. I always end up forgetting to watch, or having something beteer to do, then I come back and Im totally lost [sorry, bad pun]. I did catch the 1st episode, seemed REALLY good.

Just got back from seeing Serenity.
As a fan of the "firefly" series, I thought it was great, but cannot comment for those that haven't followed the series. I mean, I suppose enough is explained within the film to give you a basic idea of the events that have occured during the series, and the character history...etc, but I feel that the fans of the show would've definately got a little more out of this film.
A few unexplained elements of the story that weren't covered in the series were explained rather well, and gave the overall tale a little more depth.
There's REAVERS! Lots of 'em...part of the film actually explains how they came into existence, and I thought the way they tied this into it was awesome.
I have to say, there was at least ONE death I wasn't expecting.:( Those that have watched the show will know who and when upon seeing it...a crappy way for a good character to go out.
Funny, sad, dark, good characters and an intelligent, driven nemesis added to the mix.
Even if there's no sequels or another ongoing series (both as rumoured), I feel they completed the story very well. See it if you're a fan of firefly, if not, I'd suggest checking out firefly first.
8/10.

The Terror

I wasn't really expecting much from this so I was really disappointed. It's old, fairly slow moving and absent of any real violence. That being said, I still thought it was somewhat entertaining, if for no other reason than to see Jack Nicholson at such a young age! (This has to be one of his first movies.) Boris Karloff was good too, but the plot was kinda lame. I'm sure this movie was great when it came out but it doesn't hold up to the test of time the way Night of the Living Dead or House of Wax do.

C-

Amelie

This is a very strange, yet stylish French film of a very unique girl and her rather crappy life. It's subtitled so if that's a problem for you, you may wanna skip this one. I don't know that it was as great as everyone I talked to had been saying it was, but it was entertaining. Some parts are kinda funny.

C+

Shredder

Mid-budget slasher film that finds a group of snowbarders straded on a mountain with a fairly creative homicidal maniac. The acting is not great, but not so horrible it detracts from the film, the plot's kinda weak, but the gore is decent. (There is one kill scene towards the end that makes it worth renting on it's own.) All in all, I was expecting very low budget, shitty horror and I got mid-budget & decent gore so I was actually pleasently surprised. I'd say it's worth a rent for cheesy slasher fans.

C+

Next movies I'll be watching..... Hood of the Living Dead, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

I always thought his costume sucked to begin with so I wasn't too bothered by the change. (Not that the new one is any better though.)

I think the coolest looking villians are Venom and Carnage.

That's cool. I'd watch it too if I didn't think Fulci was an over-rated hack.

bwind22 10-01-2005 04:15 PM

Hood of the Living Dead - It's as bad as it sounds. The budget was really low, the acting was amateur, the gore & kills were mainly off-screen and the plot was very basic. In short, this is pretty much a movie that any of us could make with friends, camera equipment and a couple hundred bucks. Personally, I enjoy watching low budget schlock just because it gives me ideas for my own low budget schlock, but I wouldnt really go so far as to recommend this one to anyone. It's pretty bad.

Part of Van Helsing, but one of my friends called and I needed to do a math assignment, so I didnt get to finish. I atill cant see why so many people hate that movie....one of the better action/horror flicks of recent years, I love it.

Ok, so it was really cheesy and it totally slaughtered the story of all characters involved. So what, it was still damn cool:p

House of Wax - 1953 version

Cant believe Ive only watched this twice. Great movie, one of Price's best. The burning near the first is one of the most amazing scenes ever filmed, IMO. The morgue bit was VERY cool as well. Great movie, and if you havnt seen it, I highly recomend buying the DVD. Only $10 CDN, and it also comes with the 1933 Mystery of the Wax Museum, which is a very good movie also. Great value, great DVD.

Kontroll. Started off as a fairly normal drama/thriller about subway controllers in Budapest. At the halfway point, it swifty transformed into... well, I'm not sure exactly. Surrealism? I have no idea. Strange and altogether unsatisfying movie. 5/10

AVP

I gotta couple of questions about this one:

1) The queen laid and hatched thousands of eggs, that VERY quickly grew to full maturity without any host to incubate in...Sooo...Why was it necessary for people to be chosen as sacrifices to host these things? and why, after they were hatched, did they need to attach themselves to someone's face to implant another alien into a host, if it obviously wasn't necessary to HAVE a host in order for them to procreate??

2) The bomb that went off in 2004 wiped out the pyramid and left a giant crater, it also destroyed most of what was on the surface...Sooo, why did the bomb that was detonated in 1904 wipe out every living thing (even the humans on the surface), but leave the pyramid and surface intact?
