I thought it was enjoyable, but pretty straightforward for a Mark Duplass script. It has more of a survival thriller feel to it. I guess what makes it "feminist horror" is that the men are bad, the women are good, and the good women take revenge on the bad men. A bit simplistic for my tastes, but still a good watch.

For me, it teetered me on the line of love and hate, and in the end neither won. So I guess that's good enough for me. Too much of guys punching women in the face though.

Lucky McKee is a weird mix. He's been criticised for misogyny, while at the same time clearly delivering feminist themes. Confused? Hypocritical? Genius? :)

I'm guessing you didn't like The Woman?

Yeah, Alyce felt a bit amateurish for the first half, but when the shizz hits the fan, wee doggie it really hits the fan. I ended up liking it quite a bit.

I didn't realize that my boyfriend wrote Black Rock; I'll have to check it out now. ::wink::

As for The Woman, no I haven't seen it - I have a feeling that it'll make me feel icky and uncomfortable, so I've decided to avoid it - What are your thoughts on the movie? Like it, don't like it, etc.? And isn't it part of the Jack Ketchum trilogy?

This is currently On Instant and it's pretty damn good.

Loved this boy. He carried the entire movie, and while his acting wasn't up there with the likes of Tye Sheridan I still think he was perfectly cast for the role. Tough but still innocent looking. I mean.... just.... look at that face!! ::love::

Watched it tonight. Pretty derivative, but not bad. I don't regret it. Hey, it has Katharine Isabelle.

Netflix is my best friend.....

Yeah, I also watch a lot of tv :danger:

Netflix is great for catching tv shows and movies when you don't have cable!!

My tv shows:
The Following
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy
The Walking Dead
House of Cards
Orange is the New Black
Revolution
American Horror Story
Supernatural
Vampire Diaries
Sherlock
Bates Hotel
Blacklist
Low Winter Sun
The Killing
Dexter
And there could be a few I missed.

Movies in my instant queue:
There are a lot (more in my dvd que) and I just don't feel like typing them all. It sounds like it's similar to what many of you watch on here.

Btw, it's awesome to be on a forum where people love horror movies as much as I do ::EEK!::

I went though the entire Netflix Horror list again last night. And, not sure why, but nothing really jumped out at me to interest me...

Can any or all give a few very good and/or good and original horror recommendations from that list?

I've seen these:
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dead Silence, V/H/S, Pontypool, Dreamscape, John Dies at the End, The Cabin in the Woods, You're Next, Bram Stoker's Dracula, World War Z, The Fly- I recommend them all.

I've added these to my que:
The Hole
Odd Thomas
Night of the Creeps
Berberian Sound Studio
Monsters
Side Effects
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Anyone see Potpourri? Any good?

I really liked Odd Thomas. A good horror/comedy in the vein of The Frighteners.

"Monsters" is slow paced but very well made. Contains some nice big-ass-monster scenes.

If you're into silly comedy horror you might like Tucker & Dale vs Evil. I didn't find it that funy personally, but lot of people love this movie.

The Hole, Night of the Creeps.... meh..

Haven't seen Potpourri.

Sculpt - I really liked The Den; have you seen it? Absentia is a good indie too.

Not horror but Galaxy Quest is streaming!

I liked The Den. Thought it was creepy and unsettling. You have to like low budget found footage about the internet though.

Straker 11-06-2014 03:40 AM

I want to second the recommendation for Snowpiercer & The Double. Both cool films. Especially The Double which is one of the best movies I've seen this year. Dark dystopian satire directed by Richard Ayoade (Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Submarine) well worth a watch.

I just watched Snowpiercer, very cool. The train is a nifty device to represent the current human system, kinda like the island in Lord of the Flies.

I'll check out The Den, probably Absentia too. Thanks!

Loved, Galaxy Quest, excellent film. Haven't seen that in awhile.

ChronoGrl 11-07-2014 11:50 AM

Definitely check out Absentia too. ::cool:: The movie poster is pretty silly and misleading. It's by the same director who did Occulus; he definitely knows how to establish a creepy mood. I need to rewatch it myself.

I didn't find that one too entertaining. Nothing really happened for the most part, but when the movie tried to be scary, it was.

My previous topic got me thinking that it would be nice to have a place to post movie recommendations from Netflix. There are some pretty solid little gems in Netflix that are easy to miss if you don't know what your hunting for. Ill start us out. I love documentaries about serial killers. Its one of my favorite things and there are a lot of them on Netflix. I especially love the less talked about ones. One in particular really got me, I loved the history and sheer brutality of the man. So I give you;

Carl Panzram
The Spirit of Hatred and Vengeance

Isn't it fantastic. Incredibly detailed for how long ago it all happened. Carl was probably the most psychotic serial killer in the history of the USA but prior to stumbling across it on Netflix, I had never heard of him before. For Christ's sake he stole from a president, bought a yacht and sailed to freaking Africa???? I tried to find a good copy of his writings but couldn't. I would kill to read them.

Jake.Ashworth 02-11-2015 08:01 PM

I mean, the man had a way with words..In my life time I have murdered 21 human beings. I have committed thousands of burglaries, robberies Larcenys, arsons and last but not least I have committed sodomy on more than 1,000 male human beings. for all of these things I am not the least bit sorry. I have no conscience so that does not worry me. I don’t believe in Man, God nor devil. I hate the whole damed human race including myself. [sic]

Great!!

Have you seen "Joe" yet? Kinda the same sort of movie and just came out on Netflix. One of Nicholas Cage's best performances. Too bad for him he got outshined by a young boy named Tye Sheridan. A boy I'm really looking forward seeing co-starring Ezra Miller in yet another addition of The Stanford Prison Experiment.

I actually liked it slightly better than the first one. Thought the creator had found a perfect blend of horror and comedy. Compared to the first movie the comedy was a little more obvious and lighter in this one.
