Last Year at Marienbad (1961)

Not just a defining work of the French New Wave but one of the great, lasting mysteries of modern art, Alain Resnais’ epochal Last Year at Marienbad (L’année dernière à Marienbad) has been puzzling appreciative viewers for decades. Written by radical master of the New Novel Alain Robbe-Grillet, this surreal fever dream, or nightmare, gorgeously fuses the past with the present in telling its ambiguous tale of a man and a woman (Giorgio Albertazzi and Delphine Seyrig) who may or may not have met a year ago, perhaps at the very same cathedral-like, mirror-filled château they now find themselves wandering. Unforgettable in both its confounding details (gilded ceilings, diabolical parlor games, a loaded gun) and haunting scope, Resnais’ investigation into the nature of memory is disturbing, romantic, and maybe even a ghost story. (-From Criterion)

-New, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Alain Resnais (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
-New audio interview with Resnais, recorded exclusively for this release
-New documentary on the making of Last Year at Marienbad, featuring interviews with many of Resnais’ collaborators
-New video interview with film scholar Ginette Vincendeau on the history of the film and its many mysteries
-Two short documentaries by Resnais: Toute la mémoire du monde (1956) and Le chant du styrène (1958)
-Original theatrical trailer and Rialto’s rerelease trailer
-New and improved English subtitle translation
-PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Mark Polizzotti and a section on Alain Robbe-Grillet’s evolving attitude toward the film, including the author’s introduction to the published screenplay and comments by film scholar François Thomas

Do yourself a favor and get a hold of this DVD- I would not be opposed to saying that even setting aside for a moment the brilliant narrative and haunting acting, this may be the most aesthetically perfect film I have ever seen. It just looks gorgeous. The camera movements are otherworldly. I swear Resnais is not from this planet- his focus and vision are too smooth.

So just how French New Wave is Last Year at Marienbad? It sounds like it could be interesting, but I just hate French New Wave. I just find it so boring and frustrating to watch. I've also been known to fall asleep during them.

It's definitely a lot different than your standard French New Wave (i.e. Breathless/Band of Outsiders, 400 Blows, and so on). In fact, the film and its creator (Alain Resnais) belonged to a group they called the "Left Bank", which clearly separated itself from the traditional New Wave directors. The Left Bank incorporated more aspects of experimental film, and tended to create more moody, expressionist pieces.
Last Year at Marienbad, to me, really had the feel of early surrealism, like (I linked the videos in case you want to check any of these out):

Buñuel's L'age D'or (1929)

Kirsanoff's Ménilmontant (1926)

Epstein's Fall of the House of Usher (1928)

I'll go out on a limb and say that even though you don't care for the regular French New Wave stuff, you could still enjoy this a lot.

Haha, although when you say "boring and frustrating watch", that's kind of exactly what Last Year at Marienbad is. I mean, not boring, but it's really slow-paced, and it can certainly be frustrating to watch as it doesn't try to give you any answers.

So I don't know, but I would recommend at least taking a chance on it.

alkytrio666 05-09-2009 10:48 AM

I'm going to go out on a limb Papillon and guess that what you dislike about typical new wave are the characters, or the way they're (not clearly) developed? For instance, have you seen Breathless? I have a friend who can't stand Godard or Trouffout because of their simultaneous detachment and dependence on character, the way we're forced to observe them as objects but the film's message often relies on some kind of emotional attachment to them.

Last Year at Marienbad is less about who the characters are and more about a collective human consciousness, the bizzareness of memory, the frailty of human relationship. I would agree with Fotunato that what Resnais is drawing on for 'Marienbad' is something far older and more complex than new wave tradition, something more along the lines of surrealism. What's interesting here is that surrealism is stretched and shaken to be less about distorting reality and more about understanding its delicacy.

I would encourage you to give the film a try- it is a bit slow-moving, but its never dull. At an hour-and-a-half, your mind will be plenty busy trying to figure out the strange puzzles of the film. As a plus, I'd even go so far as to call it a pseudo-horror film; it toys around with the ideas of ghosts (these ghosts are much more real, though) and there are wicked surprises found as the story unfolds.

145-minute version of Clive Barker's Nightbreed

Set in the canadian wilderness, a search is on for a serial killer and an ancient tribe of monsters called the night-breed.

"We just finished watching a 145 minute version of the film's mid-1989 workprint!
That's 44 minutes longer than the theatrical release!!
And it's even more significant than that since there are none of the later re-shoots of Decker's murders, so the actual deleted footage is far more than 44 minutes!

Yes, there's (lots) more violence as the Sons of the Free invade Midian, yes there's some deleted stop motion footage, yes, Narcisse gets decapitated, yes Lori stabs herself on a hilltop and Boone bites her... Yes, yes, yes!

Now, this is just a VHS copy so it's not of releasable quality, so... thank you for your continuing messages of support - let's keep working to get a proper DVD release for an extended Nightbreed...
"

August 11th, on Blu-Ray

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...LL._SS500_.jpg

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Genius Products and The Weinstein Company are set to release Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 'Grindhouse' on Blu-ray on August 11.

No edition details are available, other than this would be a two-disc set, but it may well be the theatrical Grindhouse double feature.

'Grindhouse' was conceived, edited and shown theatrically (in the US) as a typical exploitation double-feature as one could attend at cheap theaters in the 1970s: it consisted of two features ('Planet Terror', by Robert Rodriguez, and 'Death Proof' by Quentin Tarantino), interspersed with fake trailers and bumpers.

However, the film underperformed theatrically and the films were released separately (in expanded versions) on home video. The Grindhouse double feature wasn't even released theatrically in Europe, and its only DVD release so far is a coveted special edition from Japan.
