DEATHDREAM (1974). Decent Bob Clark film that clearly got some inspiration from "The Monkey's Paw". A family hears of their son's death in Vietnam, but are surprised when He returns...although something is just a little off about him. Worth a watch and I believe this was the film debut for Tom Savini. ***

C.H.U.D.: In my memory, this one went in the same bin as other silly 80s flicks like The Ghoulies. So based on some of John Heard's scenes, I was kind of suprised. This flick does take itself kind of seriously. Maybe not 100 percent, but still.

That said, it cannot help but look goofy. From the silly special effects on the monsters to the overacting on the characters or some of the scenes with The Wet Bandit (Daniel Stern will forever be a wet bandit). And now even in a funny way.

So, in short: a silly story with no good kills and very little to keep you invested. Two stars, but he second one is mostly for nostalgia's sake.

Yep! Well said.

I loved the concept and the trailer. I actually saw this in the theatre with a buddy of mine. The film does take itself seriously. I thought the one scene where the CHUD breaks through a wall was kinda scary and well done. It has some moments.

It probably should have been rewritten and expanded, adding more action and suspense scenes. I didn't mind the effects, there just wasnt enough horror and suspense going on. Same old story of missed writing opportunities.

LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973). While I still like this, found it has not aged so well- found Clive Revell to be such a pompous buffoon and Pamela Franklin quickly becomes shrill although the scene where She tries to "comfort" Daniel Belasco is still pretty hard hitting. And even if He really becomes hammy (especially towards the end), still love Roddy McDowell is just about anything. And as for Gayle Hunnicutt::love::::love::::love:: Worth seeing to be sure, but still in THE HAUNTING's shadow. ***

Love Legend of Hell House, especially the writing and subject matter. The experiment scene is great, excellent sound and effects. I wish there was more of the experiments and effects, but still a fine film.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but i seem to recall the ending a bit abrupt. speaking of abrupt endings, and The Haunting... yep, abrupt ending. ::big grin::

GOD TOLD ME TO (1976). This starts out well with ordinary citizens committing heinous crimes and when asked, the film title is uttered. A Policeman investigating the case finds there may be UFO"s involved or actually Divine intervention...at least that's how I saw it. Interesting premise, but goes on so many tangents, it's almost as though We're in different films, including Black Gangsters, search for identity and claiming faith while doing otherwise. Biggest surprise in here is an early role for Andy Kauffman, who according to IMDB managed to infuriate some people while filming. Worth a look, but could have been so much more. **

The Stepfather

This film has one and only one star: Terry O'Quinn. Throughout the film, he delivers a haunting performance as the titular stepfather.

His shining moment is when he makes the opening sequence into the memorable scary scene that it still is with his calm demeanor after a horrible deed. Whenever I see this film, I can't help but wonder: Was the idea of Jerry Blake whistling Camptown Races already in the script or did O'Quinn improvise that?

STEEL MAGNOLIAS (1988)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Has been derided as a "Chick Flick", but think for the most part, it's a good involving film about a group of longtime friends that deal with a tragedy later in the story. Great cast with Oscar Winners like Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine and Olympia Dukakis, who is hilarious here. Darryl Hannah seems to be have thrown into the story to fill space -find her character mealy-, but Dolly Parton is wonderful as the Hairdresser who eventually becomes a "Chain"

I'm sure Her family and friends love her, but like Tom Cruise, I JUST DO NOT see Julia Roberts's appeal. Her character is spoiled and snippy and her obstinate, foolish decision is responsible for the tragedy occurring and was appalled that she received an Oscar nomination for SM-would have given it to Dolly instead.

Still, the vets provide many involving moments, especially Sally whose raw wail composed of grief and rage gave Me chills. ***1/2

I cry hard at that scene every single time. I think my favorite characters were Olympia Dukakis's and Shirley MacLaine's. So many great lines!! Some that I still use!

Two Evil Eyes (1990)

8/10

Enjoyed almost every scene and was a triffle scared too. There is no particular genious in it [as far as I can see in one view], but no flaws, either. What I would call a genuine horror film. ::cool::
Based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe, and directed by Romero and Argento. So the aesthetics kind of mixed.

WANTED:BABYSITTER (1975). Convoluted overlong drama involving a Kidnapping and Mistaken identity. Mainly watched it for the cast : Robert Vaughan (THE MAN FROM UNCLE), Vic Morrow (THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, 1982's THE TWILIGHT ZONE) Sydnie Rome (Lots of Euro Trash) and Maria Schneider (LAST TANGO IN PARIS, THE PASSENGER). **

DEADLY GAMES (1982). Was looking on 1000 MISSPENT HOURS to read "El Santo's" reviews when came across this, which I had never heard of. Also even with all my reference books, only found a couple of brief reviews. Decided to check it out on YOUTUBE...

Afterwards, figured it was so unknown is because it deserves to be. Follows the basic rules of 80's Slasher films (Unseen Killer, Red Herrings, Promiscuity), so there is nothing You really haven't seen before and done better as well. Not much in the way of blood and the Women in here are pretty obnoxious with infernal voices, especially the first victim , whose suggestion to the killer is extremely offensive.

Cast includes Steve Railsback (HELTER SKELTER, LIFE FORCE, THE STUNT MAN), JoAnn Harris (THE BEGUILED) and a young Colleen Camp (WAYNE"S WORLD, THE VAGRANT) joined by June Lockheart (TV'S LOST IN SPACE, LASSIE and 1938's A CHRISTMAS CAROL) and former Football player Dick Butkis (who spends most of the film playing football). *1/2

Labyrinth (1986)
5/10

Had to see it eventually. It's cultural landmark, required viewing for me.

Girl decides to save her little brother from a mystical being in a maze.

Loved the opening... seemed like it was going to be morality tale or allegory about a women embracing or rejecting responsibility, adulthood, feminine nurturing -- as represented by caring for her little toddler brother -- or choosing to live a carefree childlike life free from that responsibility. But instead, once she decides to go get her brother, which she decides to do immediately because, as she says, "I have to", she learns absolutely nothing from her experiences. She doesn't change at all. The scenarios teach nothing. The only thing the scenarios might teach are friends are useful; and be kind to people and they might be useful; and forgive people and they might be useful. Nothing else.

The sets were great. The music sucked. It wasn't humorous. Not a feel good film. I guess it was a happy ending, but more like, 'I just need to get some rest now'. Much of the film was quite boring, especially the short, but not short enough, "fight" scenes. I know why nobody ever quotes anything from this film. There's nothing to quote.

LINDA (1973). Enjoyably bad TV movie of a woman who in the best tradition of DOUBLE INDEMNITY manipulates the men in her life to pull off the seemingly perfect crime. As usual, Stella Stevens ::love::::love::::love:: shines and carries the story on those lovely shoulders-along with a great penultimate line- with some decent support by John Saxon. Ed Nelson (NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST), alas, gets some bad lines and uninspired direction...his character is truly annoying and the majority of his scenes will have You rolling your eyes. ***

It's the shortest of the three versions. There is less gruesome stuff (but still plenty of it), some different dialogue, scenes added (The talk which reveals the "Delicate condition" of Fran), scenes deleted (such as 95% of the Police Dock portion) and some different musical cues; I believe all are from Goblin.

Hope this helps. Still worth checking out, but I'll always reach for the other versions; The theatrical version that I saw so many times at Midnight Movies/VHS ( I believe George preferred this cut of the film) and usually the extended version , which has more grue.

Got ya.

Yeah, I prefer the extended version, mostly because I want more of everything before they get to the mall.

The mall stuff is ok, I just don't think there's quite enough there for the runtime of the 'only at the mall' section.

In the 2h19m version they hit the mall at 32mins in, and it ends at the mall. Sure, it's a mall film. I accept that. I just wish it was only about half. ::big grin::

LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK-1972. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SPOILERS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>

LOBG scared Me the first time seeing it (a week away from turning 12) and seeing it over two years later, was laughing more Han anything. Had a Friend with a very infectious laugh and his outburst when the arm goes through the bathroom window (when the poor guy is on the crapper::EEK!::) really had Me going, but not as much as when said poor guy busts through the door. My Buddy fell out of his seat with hilarity::cool::!

Watching it recently, it really hasn't aged well at all. Lots of filler and those cornball songs::embarrassment::. But on a personal note, it reminded Me very much of younger days. Fouke Arkansas (SW portion of the state near Texas and Louisiana) where the story takes place reminded Me VERY MUCH of the area in NE Arkansas where many of my relatives lived (Close to Missouri and Tennessee). Much of the same type of scenery and hearing the locals talk in the film certainly brought back many memories of many relatives , mostly all of them passed on by now::sad::.

So for nostalgia sake, worth checking out. But on its own terms, once will more than enough for a first time viewer. **
