SUGAR HILL (1973). Still another AIP Blaxploitation flick about the title character-Marki Bey who reminds me a lot of Pam Grier in here; maybe the script was written with her in mind-avenging her boyfriend's death by gangster Robert Quarry (Count Yorga himself) with the help of some voodoo. Pretty silly, with extremely loud clothes and non PC epithets, but the zombies in here are actually pretty scary and give the film an edge. The scariest part of the whole film is Zara Cully-Mother Jefferson from THE JEFFERSON'S- as a High Priestess...the mind boggles!!!!!!!!!! ***

HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP (1980). Entertaining trash that shows what the monsters REALLY do with the girls they always carry off. Good for what it is with some impressive Rob Bottin work and also noticed Gale Hurd as a PA; of course, she later became Gale Anne Hurd. early James Horner score, long before TITANIC.
Ending is pretty what You would expect in a film like this-found out the girl is Lynn Theel, but was Lynn Schiller as PLAYBOY's July 1975 Playmate as well as dating The Eagle's Glen Frey back in the 70's. *** |
Love HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP - have you seen the tepid remake?

BEYOND THE DOOR 1974
A couple find that they are inexplicably expecting a third child. They are a happy family with quirky kids, a boy and a girl. At a birthday party, the husband happens upon his wife in the bathroom vomiting what appears to be dark blood. That right there would have rung my warning bell but they soldiered on. A bit of a gitchy mash up of Rosemary's baby and the exorcist. I'd watch it again with you. |

| Roger Ebert January 1, 1975 | Print Page Where's Jessica?" asks her worried husband, when she disappears during a birthday party for the children. He finds her in the bathroom, regurgitating pints, maybe gallons, of blood. "Honey, are you all right?" he asks, in the understatement, or underquestion, of the year. She allows that she feels a little weak. They agree she ought to get more rest. The whole movie is this way: maddeningly inappropriate in the face of its horrors. And yet "Beyond the Door" is one of the topgrossing movies in the country right now. Why? Maybe because at some dumb, fundamental level, it really does live it up to, or down to, its promise. It's not well acted, its "Possessound" sounds routed through the ventilation system and the print looks like it was left out too long in monic possession. And it's got one hell of an ad campaign. The TV spots and the trailer on the viewer in front of the theater show all sorts of delightful horrors, a menacing voice dares you to see it and, inside the theater, there's a party atmosphere. Parts of the movie play almost as comedy. I'm usually disturbed when people laugh at violenceÑthe audience reaction to "Death Race 2000" was especially unsettlingÑbut in a movie like "Beyond the Door," the laughs seem almost appropriate. That's during the earlier parts of the movie, when mysterious hands reach out to touch shoulders in darkened rooms, and it turns out it's just the husband patting his wife. In the later stages, though, when Jessica (Juliet MillsÑyes, Juliet Mills) begins to turn green and talk like the Big Bopper, the movie's just conventionally disgusting. We get green vomit, brown vomit, blood, levitations and other manifestations of the devil. He is, by the way, in Jessica's womb. She has this short order pregnancy that proceeds so rapidly she's three months pregnant within a week (if that's the way to put it). The mysterious stranger seems to have the answer, and after saving her husband from being run over by a truck, he offers several enigmatic epigrams such as, "Some people attract . . . misfortune." It's all trash, but it's scary trash. I wouldn't call it entertainment, but it's a diversion, all right. Yuk. |

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (1974). Loved the James Bond films with in Junior High, but find a lot of them do not age well. This was a big Seventh Grade favorite as always great seeing Christopher Lee-he seems to be having a good time here-and although her character is quite annoying, Britt Eklund was absolutely gorgeous in here.
Not a keeper, but worth checking for Old Time's Sake, although the Sheriff in here deserved to be fed to the Sharks. **1/2 |

The Corpse Grinders - When the Lotus Cat Food Company finds itself in financial trouble, the owners decide to find a new, cheap source of meat -- the local graveyard. Only one problem -- soon cats develop a taste for human flesh, and tabbies are tearing out throats all over town.
Really silly but well worth watching just to laugh at. No nudity, but enough lingerie to open a Victoria's Secret. No gore, but a lot of putting people into one end of the grinder and cat food squirting out of the other. 7/10 |

Oh, I forgot all about this one! Thanks for the reminder. I've wanted to see it for ages but it has sort of slipped through the cracks of my " must see list " over the years. |
The Mechanic
Charles Bronson schooling Jan Michael Vincent on the ways of the hitman. Typical "acting" job from Charlie. Mr. Vincent....not so good. He was much better in "Buster & Billie" |
also had a bit of a Jaws Marathon over the last week.
of course everybody knows how good the first one is.......then they did a nose dive. While 2 wasn't horrible, the third installment was pretty bad with the cheesy 3-D effects and weak story. Although it did have Leah Thompson in her first role. [ what a cutie ] And 4 is laughable, culminating with a shark "roaring" in the finale. I would say it falls into the "so bad it's good] category. |

QUEST FOR FIRE (1981). Very good film of a trio of Cavemen (for lack of a better word) in search of the element. Early roles for Rob Pearlman, Rae Dawn Chong and Everett McGill . wonderful scenery and really a sense of being there. ****
