Ghosts..?

Some of you may think I’m crazy, just join the crowd, but I wanted to share with you something really creepy that happened to me a few days ago while working here at the house, bear with me on my writing skills being I’m no great writer.

I live in a very rural area in West Central Indiana, it’s primarily farmland, and I think there’s only about a 35,000 person population in the whole county. I was working on some fence along a ridge overlooking a wooded area, with a cornfield on the far side. I was alone, no one was home, and I was just sitting there thinking, and pondering life. The dogs kept coming around looking at me and what I was doing, they kept barking, and I would look around to see what it was they were barking at, but I didn’t see anything. While I was working I kept getting this strange feeling like when somebody’s around and you can’t see them, or you’re being watched. I looked around several times but I didn’t see anything, no squirrels, no deer, just me and the dogs, and they were off nosing around most of the time. All of a sudden out of the corner of my right eye I caught a dark object. I started to turn to look, but I kept my head down, and turned towards my work. I kept watching out of the corner of my eye, turning my head slightly to the right. About fifty to seventy-five yards away next to a small branch or creek at the bottom of the ridge were two young children, (10-12 years old). They were just standing there, looking right at me, not moving. I couldn’t really tell what type of clothes they were wearing, but they were dark in color. I kept watching them, and they me, not moving a bit. Finally I turned my head and looked right towards them. At that exact moment I heard a noise more in front of me, like the breaking of a stick on the ground, causing me to look away from the children. Seeing nothing I turned back towards the creek, and the children were gone.

I can’t describe to you the cold chills that went up and down my spine. I don’t want to admit I was scared, but I had this awful feeling of dread come over me. I kept scanning the woods to see if I saw anything else but couldn’t see anything. The dogs soon came over, and everything kind of returned to normal. The whole experience lasted maybe five to ten seconds, but seemed a lot longer. I worked along the ridge for the rest of the day and didn’t hear or see anything else.

I told my wife about it when she came home from work that evening, and as I expected she said, “What do you expect, what with all those Horror movies you watch.” I reasoned with her, and said I’m a big guy, I’ve worked in a prison most of my adult life, and I’ve not been scared like that ever! She still laughed it off and said well at least you got a new story to tell everybody. We went to bed and I could hardly sleep thinking about what I saw and felt. I decided to drive over to the farmer’s house that I bought the land from, and asked him if he had ever heard of any one seeing small children in the area, like maybe I had, he said no, but he told me that in the field on the other side of the ridge had stood an old one room school house at one time. He said he remembered his Dad and some other farmers tearing it down when he was very young. But he never heard any stories about it. He also told me about an old farmhouse that sat on top of the ridge near where my house sits now. He said it was an old house when he was a boy, and that it burned down after a fire started in the attic, of course he didn’t know if any body died or not..!especially a couple of kids.

So it’s now two days later, and I still can’t sleep well, I keep thinking about what I saw. I feel a little better telling you guys about it, even though I’ll probably get a lot of flaming about it too. Any ideas on this stuff, man it creeped me out. I know this post is long, but I just wanted to tell you guys about it, and maybe get some opinions.

Damn man, that is pretty creepy, only thing I can think of is probably when the old house burnt down there were kids in it...I know it's probably hard, but I wouldn't let it get to ya.

Thanks for the story MovieMan ... but, I guess you know I don't believe in ghosts and have a tendency to agree with your wife on this one ( :) ).

But, if you seriously think you saw something out of the ordinary, and feel the need to investigate further just to put your mind at rest, you can always go to the chamber of commerce and check out the files on the property. Go through the files, looking for any information about the school house or the farm house. They should have information on any structures built on that property. Get yourself some dates. When was the school house destroyed, when did the farm house burn?

Once you have the dates, go to your local library and hope they have a pretty good collection of periodicals for your area. Look up newspaper articles for the dates you acquired, and see if they have any more information you can go off of. You may have to use a microfiche for this one.

Of course, there might be an easier way to begin research on this ... although, I have never done research on property before, so I'm just stating what I would do with my lack of experience. You could always just go to the chamber of commerce and ask someone how you would go about starting your research, and hope they are able to tell you more than I can. :)

When i first moved into the house i'm in now. i could and still do hear footsteps coming up my hallway. when i was laying in bed, i use to get up and check it out cause i thought someone had broken in. but now i just ignore it. i figured that if its something bad it would have got me by now. I know it isn't creepy but man. it was at first when i was laying in bed late at night shivering with fright under the covers.....crying.........screaming........pooping my pants.....etc

That is a creepy story movieman, but I'm sure it was just a couple of neighborhood kids. You said it was a wooded area so I'm betting the kids just scampered off into the woods when you looked away. But as Stingy said, I would look into it just to ease your mind.

I agree with you on the ghost thing, I never really believed they existed. I called my Dad this morning and he said to go to the Courthouse and do a Title search, he said that would show any previous owners of the property, he said they go back a long way, since it deals with land issues.

The farmer who I bought the property from is 76, and he said they tore the school down when he was a kid, and it was old and falling down then. He said he remembers his parents talking about the house burning down but he was also very young. I'm going to be working out there over the weekend, so you know I'm going to keep an eye out for anything..! I am also going to take a walk over to where the old house stood and do some poking around. There is an old cistern, and part of a basement/root cellar. It's open to the elements and one side has caved in, but there might be some artifacts in there.

I'm wondering if I really want to know if anything happened around here, I enjoy sleeping, and the last few nights haven't been the best. My wife the darling she is was also going around last night saying how, my going to see the new Exorcist movie has caused this, being it's so close to Halloween.

That is a really cool story. Why don't you check the archives for any newspaper articles on it? If it was not too, too, long ago , you might find something in an old newspaper about it. Ours here goes back to the 1800s even. I've looked up things before.

i dont know what to say! being that im a very superstitious parson and all. i believe everything happens for a reason, you saw them when no one else had, meaning you have something very special to do in the future now. you either might be expecting a child soon, not just from birth. or they want you to venture out into the wood to discover something, like their remains so they can finally be at rest! other than that i dont know that to say except look up on the net on past places that have been where your home is now. thats my only advise.

I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation movieman. Like newb said,it was probably some neighborhood kids. It sounds like it's bothering you so it does need further investigation. The hands on search of the site is a must.

One day my friend katie was online reserching about the movie the ring.It was raining hard that day, and it was a bad storm.Her computer is one that is connected to the ohuses electricity.And all of a sudden all the power goes off and the computer doesn't. I used to live in a house which was haunted, or at least I think it was. it was (and still is) an old wooden house, and I was pretty used to all the creaking noises but there was also souds that we just couldn't explain. There was always footsteps; if you were downstairs, it sounded like someone was walking upstairs and vive versa. couple of times I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of somebody coming upstairs but when I went to look, there was noone in the hallway. But The weirdest noises were probably in my room. they always started around midnight and ended around 4 or 5... it's hard to describe, but it sounded kinda like someone was talking on the other room, except that you couldn't quite understand the words and it came all around, from the ceiling and from the walls. My sister also told me that she had woke up several times because someone was banging the wall near her bed. she also said that one night she woke up when she hear someone calling her name and in the middle of her room she saw an older woman and a girl, just standing there...

often the experts say that when people die, sometimes their ghosts return to a favorite spot or a place of great value to the individual. they might not have died their, just really liked the school house.

i MUST SAY THIS CAUSE IT IS NINE 11.That day when it happened and they took pictures of it, there was this one picture that looked like the face of the devil.My teacher showed us a pic of that yesterday and i think that is freaking weird.DID anyone else see tha paper a couple days after they burnt down.

Yesterday 9/11, my friend Steven and his wife and kids came over. Steven was going to help me work on and hopefully finish the fence, and afterwards we were going to go out, for dinner or grill some steaks or something with the wives and kids. I made my wife promise she wouldn’t say anything to Steve and his wife about my little encounter, and she promised she wouldn’t.

I had already been working on the fence for about an hour or so when Steve got there around 8:30-9:00am. I hadn’t seen anything but a couple of Squirrels, and an occasional bird, believe me I was looking a lot. Once Steve and I started working together I stopped looking so much and concentrated on the work. We had been working about an hour or so when his wife brought us out some coffee, (another post/story) we sat on the tailgate of my truck talking about life in general when I asked him if he had ever heard of a one room school house in and around this area. He looked kind of surprised, and said no. He said you know there is one over on Cemetery Road, (how apropos) that they fixed up and made into a home. He told me were it was, and he was right I had been by it a thousand times. He said the distance from there to here would have been about right for another one, especially being this close to the County line. I told him I had talked to Mr. Sutherlin and he told me about it, and that he had also told me about an old house close to where mine sat He was saying how neat all this was and that he would like to take Mr. Sutherlin over to the field this fall after the crops were out, and have him show us about where the schoolhouse would have been. He said we might be able to find something. I told him yeah that would be great.

To make a long story somewhat shorter, we worked the rest of the day, and neither of us saw or heard anything, even though Steve was watching as my second pair of eyes and didn’t even know it. We got done around 4:00pm, and I was happy on one hand and disappointed on the other. During dinner, (we went to Texas Roadhouse) I told him about the old cellar and cistern where the old house had stood and about the fire. I told him to come over next weekend for a bit, and we would walk over there to see if we could find anything. He was of course very excited, and said he loved this sort of stuff, exploring old houses etc…So, I’m going to spend a little extra time out on the ridge this coming week to see if I notice anything, hopefully I won’t. I ‘am also going to walk down to the area where the children were standing to see if I can find anything there.

For anybody that cares, I walked down to the creek on Thursday, and went about 100 yards or so in both direction from where I had seen the children. No footprints or anything. My friend Steve couldn't make it this weekend, so I walked over to the old cellar by myself. Nothing really over there either. I going to hold my conclusions until I get over to where that old school was supposed to sit. However I am leaning towards just being crazy..!

Man, you are so lucky. You have no idea. I, personaly, think I am just crazy. See, I see ghosts all the time. I guess I get it from my brother. Ever sence a child he claimed he saw them. He never want to sleep alone. I thought he was just crazy. But now I see them. Hvae been for, I don't know, maybe 2 years. He isn't all that use to it yet, so you can believe I'm totally scared. I forgive my brother everyday I see him for calling him crazy. Now, I do NEVER try to talk to them. I'm to afraid they'll talk back. If they do, maybe they really are there and I'm not just crazy. I hate to say this but it's true, I feel so stupid thinking that I really see ghost, but I do. I HATE it so much. Thats why I to Church. Sometimes I end of crying. Sometimes I just wear tape over my eyes so I can't see them. But it just makes it worst. Sounds. Like stuff moving around. Wispers. I prey every night for it to stop but the next day I always wake up to see someone standing across the room. And it's not easy because I live alone. All alone here. Thats why I always go over to my brothers when I get a chance. Be lucky you just had one sighting. I have hundreds. Great, now I'm all scared again. Bye, I'm gonna go to a friends. Or just go stay at a bar. By the way do feel bad for calling my qysco. I still say I am. I can't believe what I see. I never will. I'm the kind of guy who wants proof. Real proof. Seeing isn't believing for me. I'm just crazy right? Theres no ghost there. Just my crazy brain pulling tricks. If its true then my mind is Stingy Jack. The master of tricks.

i live in Mississippi and we have a very small town called Lambert close by.........well they have and old trainyard there with a huge coal shute attached to the tracks.....(for anyone who doenst know a coal shute is like a 10 story brick building).......well on top of this shute sticking out is a 5 foot peice of iron......this iron was used to hang men from back in the early 1900's..........this thing is fukin freaky lookin i am not jokin and the creepiest part is that it still has a peice of rope attached to the end.........there is a local legend that all the townsfolk swear by that says that if you go to the train station after dark and if you look up at the hanging yard you can still see a man dangling high above the ground........well a couple of friends, my brother, and i went there at about midnight and stared up at the thing......nothing happened.....so we were all like whatever this is a crock.......anyway we were right about to leave when we heard a distant creaking sound.......we all looked back up and i shit you not we saw a man dangling from the fucker......i am not makin this up and to this day i will never forget the sensation of it......chills ran down my spine and we all jumped up and bolted for the car.......the whole way back home we were all silent and didnt say a word to each other.......OMG that scared the piss outta me:eek:
