i am a waiter. i wait tables and i do it very well (just ask me). my question is why do southerners and canadians tip so cheaply? i f you are southern or canadian i'd love to hear you defend yourself. i just don't get it. normally people tip quite well, but southerners and canadians ALWAYS tip like crap. even if i've got a good repoir going. i'm not shitting on these folks. southerners and candians are very nice people, they just don't tip for shit. if anyone can give me an explanation i'd love it.

makes u wonder especially if they can afford the food then why cant they tip well?

sorry i cant give an answer, but i did read on AIM once that supposedly waiters/watiresses who repeated back the orders got more money. psychological type shit, they feel as though ur really listening to them.... and its rapport. :) (i think?????? i had to learn that shit for some telemarketing job UGH but that shit proved to be helpful in life actually..)

i used to be a waitress in pizzeria/italian restaurant and its not really the southerners or canadians...ITS MORE OR LESS DOCTORS, DENTISTS, any phd or doctorit practitioner tip shitily...i dunno why but they do.

in fact one dentist who came in every wed. for lunch during this summer (i was the only one on during the day) always tipped me 10, 20, then he upped it to 45 cents...when i usually make 20- 30 bux tips a day..this bastard tiped all the girls in change below a dollar...like we were beneath him. BASTARD SONOFABITCH!

which is exactly why i want to be a bartender... TIPS! just hafto be a chick and wear slightly scandalous clothes and the bastards are hooked! WOOHOOO. sucks though cuz there be some ugly ones too

when your talking small tips what do you mean exactly? less than 15%??? im wondering if its regional, since we all seem to be in diff places. the friends ive known who got tips would easily make $100-$200 a shift in tips alone. these were in cheaper restaurants too, like $10 entrees.

I'm a southerner and I take offense to that.....I tip well everytime I eat out, usually more than I should, unless the waiter/waitress is a total fucking moron, then hell yeah I don't tip them as much....I think your generalisation is fucking crap though...because I'm sure there are just as many northerners or westerners that do the same damn thing..

think you're self lucky you don't live in australia. we dont tip at all. except at a few yuppy places. cause the way isee it. if the owner of the place wants to hire you let him pay you your wages.

Well...I'm in Northern Kentucky, and everyone that I know tips at least 20%...It's sort of a general rule of thumb around here...I just figured it was that way everywhere:confused:

When me and my girls go out to eat, we over tip sooo much. If we get a cute guy waiting on us, we purposely take forever ordering, get tons of refils and generally flirt with him. So we each tip like 30%

"Come down to Australia, we dont tip here, except i tip hot bar staff (girls)"

- Not entirely true. In my experience, the hot bar girls are the ones most prone to fucking up...I tip where I think tipping's necessary....I won't tip on EVERY drink I have at a bar, but there IS always a tip at least worth say 1 or 2 of what I'm having by the end of the night.
In restaurants, I just usually throw the change their way to the nerest 10 or 20, depending on the meal.
If you eat out, like at cafe, I'll usually only tip the waiter/ess if they're cool with ya, and don't fuck up superbly, but hey usually they don't, but yknow, usually only a fiver...which IS more than most people would do here.
Only places I don't really tip are those that it wouldn't go back to the staff...
Although, u do have a point, distorty, hardly anyone here DOES tip, we don't exactly have any kinda tipping structure so to speak, that may be that our waitstaff/barstaff and other "civil servants" are paid a little better by the hour over here?

Ever see resevoir dogs? I cant stand people who dont tip good service.... Wait people get paid shit for very hard, shitty work.

I tip 20% for average service, next to nothing or nothing for poor service, and for good to great service i have tipped from 25-50%. I have been remembered fondly and taken care of VERY well as a result. i have had bartenders remember my face after 1 visit 3 months later. They remember what i drink, and i usually get extras. I consider it advance payment on future service.

When i proposed to Bree, that night we went on a horse-drawn carriage ride around boston. The driver was friggin awesome, he gave us a history lesson, made jokes, said hi to everyone we passed, he was just an all-around great person. The ride came to $60, i paid $90 and told him to keep the change. The fact that he said he couldnt take it was why i let him keep it :)

I now have a contact in boston that has offered me all kinds of hookups, especially for next month on my honeymoon :)

So continue to not tip. You will eventually get the service you deserve.

I'm sure there are cheap-ass people of all breeds. I never was fond of generalizations. Its all about the service for me. If the waitstaff has a good sence of humor and is attentive then he or she will get at least 20 to 30%. If on the other hand he or she is "bored" or grumpy than they get dick.

This brings up another pet peeve of mine. Cashiers. You go do your weekly shopping or whatever, spending up to $200 [ I got four kids ] and the cashier [ usually a teenage girl ] will barely look at you because shes to busy talking to the girl at the next register or to the bag-boy. Pisses me off.
On the same subject....you take home the $200 worth of groceries and the next day one of the four bastards whom live in the same house will open the fridge...stand there for 5 minutes and proclaim [ loud enough for the neighboors to hear ] that "THERES NOTHING TO EAT".

sorry.....had to vent.

Had to add one more thing. When you bring home all those groceries and are bringing them into the house, the kids all manage to dissapear.

i live in florida and i personally, over tip alot!!!! just because i know what kind of people waiters have to deal with. ok here's my ley out of it if my waiter looks like they've been having a rough day then i'll be nice and leave more, or if im in a good mood then i'll leave more. i really dont care alot about money, i know it doesnt grow on trees but its not a concirn with me. anyways if my bill is $20 then i'll leave a $5 or $6 dollar tip. if my bill is $120 then i'll leave mabye a 20-30 dollar tip. but its all depending on the service. if i get bad service then i wont leave as much. :D

first off, sorry if i offended anyone. i have no prujudices, i dated a canadian girl for three years and have some very good friends from the south. it's funny to hear that you on this thread (from the south and extreme north) say that you over tip. i wish you'd come eat at my restaurant. but i stand by what i originally said at the start off this thread, when i hear a southern or canadian accent nine times out of ten i get 10% or less. i'm not making this up. strangest damn thing. i'm not calling these folks cheap or anything, i was just wondering if the customs were different where they come from. apparently not though. i guess i've just had bad luck the last 6 years.

you also have to take into place that the taxs' differ from state to state. what they are i have no clue, im only 16 and couldnt pay attention to anything if my life depended on it. but i have a couple cousins, well over 40, and second cousins who im sure have had and restauraunt job before, now i think one is with the fire dept, anyways thats off subjuct. but not every southerner tips bad! although i've only been here for 7 years out of my life. but i do know old people tip bad!!!!! omg! dont ever move to st pete!!!!!!! i swear its like gods waiting room!!!!!! omg, if it werent for state theatre and baywalk i'd die!!!!!!

generaly, if the food is good and the service came with a smile, and the resturant was nice then I'll tip a bit more than I normaly would.

If it's an okish service, the waiter will get a tip, but it wont fill up their wallet.
