What the craziest thing you've ever eaten?
bbq eel
raw fish also known as sashimi
tongue...ate it once...tastes like beef but still...just the thought...
balut (also ate this only once)
frog legs
i don't remember what it's called, but it's a purple egg

Love sushi with lots a wasabi.
Had caviar before and it tasted like shit.
My mum used to feed me tongue whe i was younger and she never told me what it was. Liked it.
Had octopus before and thought it was really bland.

Yeah....Octopus is kinda rubbery and doesn't really have much flavor, but I don't know if I would call it "weird" since it is served in restaurants....
I've eaten quite a bit of frog legs and turtle, but...Where I come from, that isn't weird either...
I've also eaten spiders and ants..Okay...THAT might be considered "weird"...lol:)

I'd like to say up front that from MY perspective, none of these things are weird, but by most ppls defintions, it's in the weird categorie
I love bbq'd octopus...I find it works pretty well with a cajun style marinade + lemon.
I'm sure I've inhaled quite a few assorted bugs...not all of them to my taste, but I think it beats them pulling a kamikaze into my eye.
I've had kangaroo which seems to be like "really weird" to most people...but I think it's great so fuck those that don't dare to try.
Uh, sushi isn't weird???
I've had escargot, which was done in a really excellent garlic sauce, it's definately worth at least checking out.
We have these shellfish here called "bugs" (both the balmain and moreton bay variety, each slightly different), they got a weird name and look kinda like a big-ass trilobite...but they're like better than lobster IMO.
I also tend to try strange combinations of things in my own cooking just to see if they work. I got some pretty funky recipes goin' on through doing this.
There's probably more, but thats all I got coming to mind.

Yeah, being in australia, kangaroo's probably just a little easier for me to come by HERE...It's quite nice, it's red meat that tastes like a toss up between a steak and lamb, totally ultra-lean tho, the whole jumping around thing they do knocks them down to (supposedly) less than 2% fat in most cuts.
Hey, even if only to try it once, u should check it out - there's apparently quite a few exporters. Trust me, "weird" as it sounds, it's worth it.
Yeah, mixing styles and (?are they?) compatable kinda ingredients rocks...most of it turns out good...

Eel is ok....but like octopus, it is rather rubbery.
Calimari is the good stuff...you just can't beat a good SQUID entree. but again, I really don't consider that weird.
I have eaten buffalo...is that weird? Snake? Deer? Swordfish?

Tostitos and Ice Cream. Sure, you could consider fried calimari or raw fish and rice weird, and I've eaten those, but that's how it's served. Tostitos and Ice Cream are two things that are never served together.

Last semester I was studying theatre. We were having a cast party and I got a little drunk and so did a friend. I was staring at the food table and decided I wanted to make a sandwich using everything that was on that table... my friend decided to join me. So we made a sandwich filled with luncheon meats, cheese, various cold salads, every type of chip on the table, peanuts, cookies and a large slab of cake.
The funny thing is it wasn't half-bad until I made the unfortunate statement, "This needs soda." And I dipped my sandwich into the soda and soaked it and ate it.
I don't need to explain what happened next, let's just say it was a colorful ending.

In the states do you guys pronounce 'twat' as 'twot'???
New an guy from america a few years ago and no matter how he tried, he couldn't say twat...he kept sayin twot. Thought it was just him but maybe the guy who wrote that poem pronounces it differently.........
..............oh..............anyway........back to the thread...........
Yeah snakes good. Never tasted anythin like it before.
But my sister recently went to thailand and looked round the markets there. She sent me two photos of some thai delicacies.........deep fried rat with skin and fur still on and some kind of frog which had its belly slit and its guts pulled outside of its body (but still attached to the frog). Apparently they do this so the guts ferment in the sun to enhance the flavour or somethin.

Calamari was bleh. not that bad, but not that great. Escargot is pretty good though

I've had snake. A watermocassin out of a river in North Carolina. It was in spring and not very big. Very lean. I had to split it with about 10 other guys so it was only about a 3 inch piece. How did it taste ? Just like chicken. It sure tasted good after eating just MRE's for past 6 days.

Ok, NOT just because I'm a stoner here, but I have for a while now been quite interested in experimenting with marijuana recipes.
Anyone who knows any, it's ok, don't bother telling me. I kinda wanna break new ground...or at least, tread upon broken ground on my own terms...
I also used to infuse chilli with coffee in my espresso machine, and with hot chocolate. The results there were actually pretty damn stunning...I'd reccomend it to anyone.
I once made a roast gravy with mint, oranges and rosemary, with just a tad of chilli (among other things *SECRET*) that was unique - in a good way.
But these two things come under more improvisational and experimental than weird, but I thought I'd mention them.
I have also had saltwater crocodile...very, VERY good.
You know ppl, I'm sick of living by other peoples definition of weird taste. None of us have said this "weird" stuff is anything but good...I'm gonna go with "exotic" from now on.
You know what I call weird? Brussel sprouts...they fucking taste poisonous, people!!!!
I always hate it when a friend with BLAND tastes in food calls what I eat weird, and refuses to even try it in the first place. Not that this makes me angry, it just makes me think of how much I wish they'd grow some balls, try it, and see that MOST of it is actually great. I have pity for these people, and it's kinda saddening sometimes, ...eh...maybe I'm just TOO into all kinds of cooking to understand them...

HAHAHA! ok. Exotic Eats then :) for me, when someone doesn't want to try the food i eat because they think it's weird, i get kinda irked too, but then i think...hey, more for me!
yeah, brussel sprouts are gross, ewww...bitter melon is another under that category. and i never liked liver either. it tastes like a creamy organ...baaa!!!

if these people wont even try new foods, usually they rae the type that arent open to trying all kinds of 'different' things (people, activities, places, styles etc)
with that said, i tend to judge people by what they eat. i get turned off when people say 'ugh i hate that stuff' and when i ask, it turns out theyve never even tried it.....
example. i had a frienda nd we went to dinner at my aunts once. she was eating the food, but when she foudn out it was salmon she stopped eating it. i was like what the fuck, you been eatin it this whole time. she dindt like fish you see. but COME ON! she was eating it!

Yes, I can read. I'm asking if there was a specific reason for not liking fish (I've heard "Oh, I don't like meat, it's against my religion" shit before), or was it just a general dislike of fish.
fluffho
08-28-2004, 09:52 PM
just didnt like fish. because it comes from the sea and smells 'funny'
but hey she ate a GOOD portion of it before finding out!! dumbass
anyway shes a good friend of mine when we do chat (1x a year if even). we do have our differences though, one of which she likes those books with the naked man and woman on the cover caled 'remembering yesterday' u know... THAT stuff..
and chee.. there have been PLENTY of times ive wanted to slap her..... :) be it her fashion atrocities, raggedy hair, just plain nastiness etc etc... she means well though

i want to try it but am scared
i saw ur post on it and not sure if u potsd another. but you have any recommendations? and i mean like straight up measurements cuz i can imagine that EASILY being fucked up.....
cheebacheeba
08-28-2004, 10:13 PM
I can't say...I mean, I'm pretty into the whole chilli thang myself, so the kinda hotness i put on my recipes could well be quite fucked up...
All I can suggest is making the hot chocolate on your stove with REAL (solid, dark OR light to your tastes, NOT cooking chocolate) chocolate, FRESH cream, milk, brown sugar, a little nutmeg and cimmamon is pretty nice (again, the real-er the better), maybe even a little coconut, or some cloves and/or cardammon, if ur into those...no powdered shit whatsoever!!!
(The above is just how I like to have mine, not how you NEED to have it)
Mix a little relatively flavourless chilli powder (you know the stuff that just tastes "hot", that u use in cooking to add spice) up with like, a teaspoon of water...get a paste goin' on, as it'll diffuse easier this way.
All I can say is just take it in measures, and add it slowly in moderation to the hot chocolate mixture on the stove, it's not meant to be SHIT-HOT to you, but having the spice going thru chocolate just....hard to explain, just try it and you'll know....
Of course, not everyone would like this recipe, but it's one of my PERSONAL favourites.
If you wanna do it with coffee, I have only ever tried it with my espresso machine, i put about a half a teaspoon of the powder on top of where I put the ground coffee, then make as usual.

Also smoked oysters dipped in Mayo.
And Anchovy filets.
I realize none of this stuff is strange in other parts of the world--But in Texas--WEIRD!

I've never seen jarred anchovies in this part of the world--always in small tins, of course preserved in salt and oil--the only other form I've seen here is in a tube similar to toothpaste. It looks like cat shit, but it's okay as a seasoning.
Kippers also are usually only found tinned.
But due to better communication the world is shrinking--it's only a matter of time.
