View Full Version : What's up with all the stupid political posts on the horror board?
Dr.Kelvinstein

And what's up with a Republican horror fan? Isn't that impossible? Republicans are the type of people who think I'm a freak for having geen hair (yes, I do) and wearing eyeliner. Since the beginning, horror has been the home of gays (James Whale, Clive Barker, MG Lewis, to name just a few), atheists (Mary Shelley, Lovecraft), punks, and misfits. Isn't horror the literary and film equilant of punk rock? As Skipp and Spector once said over a decade ago, horror is the genre to get laid to and piss off your parents. Corporate America doesn't get it and never will. Don't preach to me and I won't preach to you. I might offend you and piss you off--but that's what horror is supposed to do.

I was making a point. And my post isn't political. It's angry. There's a difference. People who don't have Airforce One in their DVD collections will probably get my point.

I just used appearance as an example. I think all true horror fans are misfits in one way or another, no matter what color your hair is (I personally like to piss off squares). By being misfits, we see the pathos in the Wolf Man, Dracula, etc. We would never discriminate against someone because of the color of their skin or what gender they choose to warm the other side of their bed.

Airforce One was a gift and what the fuck does that have to do with anything?
I'm aware of the difference between 'political' and 'angry'. I am also well aware that the two often go hand in hand. You may have been making a point, but at the same time you were knocking Republicans. That makes your post at least semi-poilitcal.
I tend to lean to the Republican side of most issues and I like horror movies and punk rock. Your broad generalizations are just that, generalizations.
I think that it's more of a generation thing than a political party thing in regards to who looks at you funny with green hair. I'd be willing to wager that the average 60 year old, regardless of political affiliation, would raise an eyebrow to someone with green hair, whereas the average 20 year old, regardless of political affiliation, wouldn't.

I have always liked you, Dr.K, and I have been impressed with your extensive knowledge of horror related topics...To be perfectly honest, I am quite surprised to see you, of all people, perpetuating a stereotype of ANY kind...As for being a misfit, or going against what is considered mainstream, wouldn't those who do NOT fit your perception of the typical Republican be even MORE outside of the mainstream?...Bwind (just ONE example), DEFINITELY doesn't fit the profile of the "typical" Republican...People of all races, creeds, religions, gender, sexual orientation, OR Political Affiliation love horror...That isn't because horror is "anti-establishment"...It's because horror is the shit:cool:...I have always believed that a love of horror, is usually associated more with people who are blessed with an abundance of creativity, intelligence, a desire for something "different", and a bit of insanity (which is always cool)...You don't have to be a member of any particular political party to possess these attributes.
BTW...Any comment that includes the words "Republican" or "Democrat" is generally considered to be somewhat political
Here is a picture of 2 "Republicans" that I happen to know personally QUITE well...They are HEAVY into metal...AND HORROR...I also see a bit of green hair and eyeliner (on BOTH of them)...They also love to be considered "misfits", but I do believe that "freaks" is their preferred term, if they must be labeled at all...Above all else, they would detest being considered "normal"...Doesn't the fact that they ARE Republicans, make them even MORE atypical than that which you have described?
Don't be angry...There is more than enough horror to go around, for ALL of us;)

Let me clarify---I AM NOT a Democrat. I distrust ANYONE wearing a suit (except David Bowie). I actually voted for Bush because I didn't agree with Tipper Gore and censorship. My beef with the Republican party RIGHT NOW is their outspoken views on gay marriages, Christianity, and the right to blow away all of our furry little friends.
Horror is a lot of things. It is the one sigle genre that embraces the misfit and the loser (along with the small genre known as the Sam Peckinpah film). But I do beleive horror can be anti-establishment. I think it sometimes needs to be.
I love this genre and everyone who shares that love. But I also like to piss people off. Don't take it personally.
And someone up there on the board somewhere tried to insinuate that I'm just a stupid kid. I'm 34, and I've never been in the mainstream. Just 'cause you get older doesn't mean you automatically sell-out.

Horror is not the *only* category that embraces the misfits. There is also Sci-Fi, and... ok, well, Horror and Sci-Fi.
I'm very liberal, I listen to heavy metal, I'm bisexual, but to look at me on the street, you'd think I was a complete square. Please, don't stereotype me as a square, or I'll chop off your nuts and ram them down your throat. Let me be who I am, and I'll let you be who you are.
I am a misfit, don't get me wrong. I'm a very, very, VERY odd person. But you would never know it from looking at me, and it sounds like you would give me a bunch of shit just for looking a certain way. I used to be just like you. Black eyeliner/lipstick/nail polish, hair down to my ass, wallet chains (at one point I was wearing 12 at a time), metal band shirts, Jnco jeans that are 20 sizes too big, the works. I understand where you're coming from, and why you are there. But you need to get over it. You stereotyping people as squares is JUST AS BAD as "squares" stereotyping people like us as being bad or evil.

I mainly used appearances as an example because it's easy and I'm lazy. You have to realize where I come from...I live in a small redneck town with a population of 3000 people. I don't meet too many people outside of horror conventions and clubs that aren't square. Everyone in this town except me and my small handful of friends are square. The town actually organizes a contest to reward the person who murders the biggest deer every year. Last year on Halloween black kids were suspended for starting a fight with stupid rednecks who wore KKK sheets to school. That's why I still dress the way I do---to offend them and let them know that I'm not one of them. It's a uniform I might not wear constantly if I lived somewhere else.

I understand even more now. I grew up in a town of less than 1,000. Hell, the school I went to had more people in it than the town I lived in. My school was a collection of all of the local backwoods towns, so you can imagine what it was like. The high school alone had 1,100 kids, all hicks or spoiled to death preps or jocks. There were very few cool people. I did the same thing as you. I fought them at every turn.
You'll get over it once you get the hell out of that town, but even after that happens, it's still going to take a long while. I'm 20, dropped out of school at 16, and I still have a hard time dealing with some of the shit that happened. But just stick with it, and keep fighting the good fight.
Just don't let yourself become one of them in the process man.

I stopped bothering inmost cases because political and religious "debates" are an exercisein pounding your head against the wall. Especially on an internet forum, you arent going to cahnge anyone's views, they are too hard-coded in who we are as people.
I do like intelligent discussion, though. conversations between bwind and stingy are usually very engaging. Ege usually adds some useful tidbits, as does orangestar. Fluffho always has something interesting to say.
But in the end, i do kinda wish things were more horror these days. Political discussion is inevitable in any settign with the election so close, though.

Hmmm .... this thread started out to be pretty interesting. What constitutes a "square" I wonder? Am I a square? I wear a suit, most of the time, for my job. Not because I have to, but because I want to set an example of myself as a figure of professionalism and class for my students. I am a democrat, for the most part, but tend to agree with conservative views in the area of economics.
I grew up and matured in small towns made up mainly of the stereotypical republican, redneck hunter. But I never considered styling my fashion in a way that would purposefully piss off this group, nor did I have a wish to show them that I was not one of them. When someone pisses you off to the extent that you feel the need to model your clothing and hairstyles in an "anti-them" fashion, well, it seems that you are letting them control you to a certain extent. These people don't really earn as a much as a thought when it comes to what I do with my life (let alone my purchasing decisions). Sort of a "live and let live" policy, I suppose. Passively attempting to piss them off really doesn't help relations that much.
Anyway, I think people like horror for a number of reasons. I'm not a misfit ... and I don't think I ever was. Yet, I enjoy horror. Why? Well, unlike Dr. Kelvinstein, I don't relate to the villains on an emotional level (although, this is certainly a valid approach to appreciation of the genre. I do not scoff at it). For me, the villains all stand for some dark side of human nature ... and deciding what, exactly, this dark side is is part of the challenge. Clasic vampires, for example, represent (for me) the human struggle with addiction. Think about it. They appear attractive, seductive, charming ... but can't really hurt you unless you invite them into your home (your body). Once you choose to do this, you are under their power. The more they "suck you dry", the more control they have over you. Horror explores the worst aspects of humanity, and the more frightening the story or film is, the more it tells me about myself.
True, horror, sci-fi and fantasy are normally associated with those people who choose to live a more clandestine lifstyle. But I don't think that these genres should be claimed by these people. Getting upset that a Republican likes horror is like yelling at an imbecile for trying to learn to read. "Reading is not for you! You have your place, and the library is not it!" We should embrace the fact that horror has something to offer to a variety of people. At least, in this light, we know that horror will not soon die out.

King of the long post, indeed. We love you stingy :D
ther is an interesting article at the crime library (http://crimelibrary.com) about what makes serial killers tick, and they use horror examples in partof it to describe the types of killers, so they have vampire, wolf-man, jekyl and hyde....
My fiance used this in a presentation she had to do for a psychology class. VEry intersting :)

Ever hear of a movie called Cabinet of Dr Caligari? First survivng full-length horror movie? It was made by some very angry, young Germans in protest against the military, men in suits, and especially war. It sort of set the standards for the whole genre.

Wow, someone's got sand in their vagina. You realize that any kind of trivia thing is useless over the internet, right? Yes, I've seen Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Who the hell hasn't? It was used as protest? Whoopty shit. Movies in general have been used as protest. The fact that a horror movie, even the 'first surviving full-length' horror movie, was used as protest doesn't mean shit.
