What is your favorite Stephen King movie? IT, Stand By Me, Rose Red and Sleepwalkers are pretty good. What do you guys like?
Has anyone heard about the making of Stephen King's book Desperation?

That would be cool if they made Desperation...long as they don't ruin yet another book!
I think The Deadzone.............loved Chris Walken in that part! Also one of my favorite books! :D

IMO this one isn't even up for debate, The Shining is by far the best Stephen King adaptation to date. I actually think it's one of the best horror movies, not just from Stephen King. Lots of people hated Jack Nicholson's performance, which I'll never understand because I thought the transformation from caring husband to raving madman was fantastic. Watching him stalk from room to room with an axe in his hand created some of the best scenes in the horror genre, the facial expressions are really creepy as well. Kubrick's direction brings it all together, the steady cam behind the tricycle turned out amazing and is a scene every horror fan knows. The only other movie that comes close IMO is Carrie, again a great diretor (DePalma) and acting (Spacek) is the reason it turned out so well. I'm not really a fan of his straight to tv movies, most are quite lame.
PS- Stand by Me is just as good as The Shining, I just decided to stick to his horror novels.

The Shining, Needful Things, Maximum Overdrive.
My top 3. I know MO is bad, but Stephen King didnt mean for ti to be good.it's just fun.
Except Lisa Simpson is fucking irritating in that movie. "Curtis? Are you dead?" Screechy little twit...

I saw IT, Pet Cemetary and Misery when I was just a kid (6 or7). IT contributed to the ever-popular irrational fear of clowns (Tim Curry was awesome, there's no denying that) and I remember the scene in Pet Cemetary when Rachael's mother came back to life and she was calling "Rachael... Rachael... Rachael" and my older sister (named Rachael) covered her eyes and told me to describe what the lady looked like... Being six years old, I tried to think of the scariest things to tell her and I said "Her nose is where her eyes are supposed to be, and her eyes are where her ears are supposed to be.. and she doesn't have any hair and there's teeth on her head!"
... I share too much on this message board.
Anyway, The Shining.. I loved that one. Stand By Me was awesome, but not really a scary movie... Carrie was good, but not as good as The Shining. I'm anxiously awaiting Riding The Bullet to be released in October.

Not horror but two of King's best books, and were made in two of the best movies EVER MADE@!!
The Green Mile
The Shawshank Redemption
Of his horror stuff:
Pet Semetary (disturbing book and movie/ kid with scalpel etc.)
Misery (Kathy Bates is amazing, book is better, is actually more gruesome than the movie. You know the scene with the sledgehammer, in the book its MUCH worse. Involves and axe and a blow torch to carterize the wounds!!!)
Children of the Corn (Satanic sh*t is always scary!)

I thought the mini series reeked of network comprimise. If you read the book, that fight at the end between Jack and Wendy should have been a lot bloodier. And would someone get the word out that having a dead character make an angelic appearance at the end of the movie is really fuck'n corny. Not mention lame. A good try, but ultimately disappointing. Kubrick's version is still better.

i like em all, but im a big king fan, but i find that the best adaptions from his books are always the mini series as they seem to take more of the book and put it in the series, when they make the movies they miss half the book out to make the movie fit within the two hour limit, the shining movie was good, but the mini series was more descriptive and actually followed the book more, but for moviesChristine was the best book and movie.

Agreed, King's books generally make better mini-series' than feature films - this is because he writes about people more than out-and-out horror, and expectant cinema crowds are not going to wait while characters are fleshed out as much as they need to me to make many of King's screen adaptations work.
Of course there are still movie winners like Carrie, The Dead Zone and The Shining -
Reason Jack Nicholson's performance is often criticised, LIVING/DEAD, is his lunatic over-acting right from the word go; once the audience spies him in the role of Jack Torrence it is apparent all is not well upstairs... recovering alcoholic or not. This performance is at odds with the scintilating book, where Torrance is gradually and more subtly played as a pawn by the evil within the hotel (which is the star) rather than becoming a simmering, demonic, axe-wielding monster at the drop of a hat.
But, Nicholson, Duvall and the kid still make for a superb horror movie however far removed it is from Stephen King's original vision.
knee jerk
10-22-2004, 07:37 AM
King's books always have great ideas and horrible endings. The guy can't end a story. You know that cool band in your town that writes cool songs but then each one goes on for like 5 minutes and your just like "o.k., let's wrap this up." That's what King is like. And that's probably why his movies are pretty horrible too.
But some are pretty alright.
Silver Bullet (c'mon...its Gary Busey!!!)
Dead Zone (Chris Walken)
the Shining (JACK!)
yeah...that's really about it....
except for his really great movies that aren't horror movies...

Cat's Eye is great - for once, every instalment of an anthology actually delivers.
Favourite bits: James Woods' tobacco-nightmare sequence and watching his wife dance about to electric shocks, the entire episode of Robert Hays inching around the building ("...you flying shithouse!") and the cat/gremlin battle near the end.

~sidebar~ Has anyone seen the version of The Shining that is 6 hours long (like a miniseries)? Well anyone who's a big fan of the book should read it because unlike Stanley Kubrick's version of it, it follows the book almost 100%. I just watched it a couple of days ago and although no one can hold a candle to Jack Nicholson's performance in the original Shining, if you've seen the miniseries, you gotta admit it's a better, more explaining, story. Possibly because Stephen King actually had a bigger role in the actual MAKING of this film.
P.S. I also love the miniseries Kingdom Hospital (even though it wasn't a very original idea of Stephen King's.)

No, it is not better. It's hideous. The Shining by Kubrick is 20 times better than the miniseries. And yes, huge fans of the book may find it truer, but for fans of MOVIES, The Shining is much superior.
And I'm quite certain Stephen King being involved in the actual MAKING of the film is a hinderance. Anytime he's involved, i.e. Max. Overdrive, the results are laughable.
I also see you put TCM 2003 version as your favorite horror movie, so that explains a lot.

Possibly because Stephen King actually had a bigger role in the actual MAKING of this film.Stephen King did this because he never really cared for Stanley Kubrick's version...He said that it left too much of the story out...He was ESPECIALLY pissed off about downplaying the boiler threat...King has to have at LEAST 2 ominous factors in his stories working simultaneously...You know like, if the rabid dog doesn't get you, heat and suffocation will, that sort of thing...There are examples of the 'second element' in EVERY ONE of Stephen King's stories...If it hadn't bothered him SO much, and for SO long...This second version would never have been made...It "follows the book almost 100%" because that was its purpose...
King loved Jack's performance though...As well as Shelley Duvall's
No one can argue with Nicholson's skill in this movie...I truly believe that Jack Nicholson's performance ALONE is what kept King from just telling Kubrick, "Fuck it, I hate it, you ruined, I'm not allowing you to do it"

If you compare Kubricks director skills with Kings..the answer gives it self...
:) Meh...It's true...King is a writer, NOT a director...He just tries really hard to put what was in his head when he wrote the story, onto the screen...Unfortunately, that's impossible....

Pet Semetary (cause its true to the book) and The Shining (cause its different to the book and actually improves it). I really like Stand By Me and Misery aswell.

The Shining...I am a huge Stephen King fan...read the book twice and I cant understand why King doesn't like it! And, to whoever brought this up, Jack Nicholson had a DAMN good performance. Possibly the best I've ever seen. Long live Stephen King.
P.S. I havent heard anything about a Desperation movie, but they are doing Bag of Bones.

"Salems lot" is one of the scariest movies i have ever seen.
But i would say that "Shawshank redemption" is, in my eyes, by far the best and most successful Stephen King movie of all times.
Its kinda funny how his few "Drama" novels are so successfull made on film and almost all his horrors are close to a "Turkey"...

misery is probably best flick
creepshows are the funnest
the stand was cool...i love that song from it
that bathroom scene in dreamcatcher with jason lee was sick
#1 The Shining
#2 The Stand
#3 Storm of the Century
The rest can just fall in behind her somewhere.
I would like to see "The Talisman" made into a movie.

You can't?
What about the ghastly, white-faced, green-eyed boy-vampires floating around and scratching on people's windows, demanding to be let in?
The fine makeup to turn Reggie Nalder into one of the most fearsome head bloodsuckers in history?
The brilliantly framed scene in the lair under the house with the kid unaware of the vampires crawling towards him in the background?
The jarring, in-yer-face shocks Tobe Hooper lets rip every so often - such as James Mason lurching into frame to claim the first boy in the woods, the hand grabbing the guy who Gus out of Basic Instinct chases from his house, and Barlow confronting the thug in the prison cell?
I could go on - but you are talking about the original version and not the remake, aren't you? Cos I haven't seen that yet, and don't really want to.

First of all in answer to someone's question, according to the official Stephen King website , Desperation is about to go into production. Also Bag Of Bones is being lined up to be made into a movie.
My favourite adaptation of Stephen King's work has to be Pet Semetary.
I must say though that it is very difficult to do justice to a Stephen King novel as a movie because of the man's talent as a writer. It is impossible to transfer the detail that King goes into to bring the characters and atmosphere of his stories to life as you read his stories into a 2 hour movie.

Agree with those last comments there - the reason why King's books seldom make good films (the mini-series are often good though, as longer running times mean more character development).
I liked The Raft too - scariest floating bin-liner I've ever seen.

Favorite King movie? Hmmm...it'd probably be "The Shawshank Redemption." I've lost count of the times I've seen that movie.
Runners-up would be: The Green Mile, Misery, Storm of the Century, and Creepshow.
