View Full Version : What scared you as a child?

Is there anything absolutely dumb as hell that scared you as a child but is laughable now? Movie or otherwise.

For me, it's that old Stallone movie, Cobra, with the guys clanging their axes together and chasing women while wearing panty hose on their heads. That shit used to scare the hell out of me and I have no idea why.

I would have to say what scared the shit out of me as a child is when I would set on my living room couch while looking down the hallway. It was always dark in the hallway because we only had one small light. But I would set there and I could swear up and down I would see a huge werewolf walking up the hallway. I would get up and go to the other chair. cause i would scare myself really bad..

My parents took me and a friend to see poltergeist in the movies. I think i was around 10 years of age. Me and my buddy were underneath the seat. Especially when that dude was peeling off his face. Not so scary now.

The hallway at my house scares the crackers out of me when it's dark. Looks like it goes on forever.

Moviewise, Chucky and Leprechaun scared me horribly as a child.

Saw Jaws when I was about 8 years old, afraid of frickin sharks under the damn bed. Why the hell I thought sharks would be swimming under my bed I have no idea. Still wont go into the ocean to this day.

Fire scared me when I was a kid because i almost burnt our house once, when all the people were asleep except the "terrible kid "who played around with lighters doing experiments on :" what happens if I light up the sofa"....euh, i got my answer then and did never again touch anything that could produce fire for a long while...till, may be  , i was 12. I was avoiding Fire....:(

Freddy Kruger scared me when I was little because I never watched any of the movies I just looked at the back of the movie box and there were some scary pictures such as freddy eating the girl when he turned into a snake.

My childhood fear?

Between the ages of 3-5...just before entering Kindergarten I had this recurring nightmare--once a week or so if my Mom recalls correctly--of being held captive in this sort of tree house thing? (Crazy, I know!) I dreamt I was with this other girl a little older than me...I had never seen her before or didn't know her name. Some guy had kidnapped us. So, after a year and a half of having this dream, hiding under the covers terrified or ending up sleeping in my parent's room many nights I went to my first day of school. (My parent's made me stop watching anything spooky or violent or strange--even cartoon ghosts--thinking that was why I was having nightmares!)
When we drove up to the school--which I had never ever been to before--I looked at the playground. THERE WAS THE FREAKING TREEHOUSE!! (We had driven past the school but from the roadline the playground was entirely hidden.)
Anyhow, being 5 I was more afraid of being left at school alone than the treehouse so I went inside with my Mom. Everything was fine for awhile and then some older kids came to show us around the school. Yup. The girl I had been keep captive with in my dream!! (She had just moved into town so I was sure I hadn't seen her!)
Well, in the end I never got kidnapped or anything...but it sure was terrifying for a kid to actually be able to comprehend all that. I hated going into that treehouse thing though and only did when the class would gather up there for story time or something. Even my Mom remembers me telling her about the dream and then about the first day of school and what I saw.

Chucky scared the shit out of me when I was a kid. I remember going to my babysitters house and she would always have a chucky movie in. I remember hiding behind the couch until my mom came and then begging my mom to stop talking and take me home. I'm over that fear now. Now I look at him and laugh. I do like him though.

I used to do the same thing b/c my stairs didn't have a back to it, like someone's hands could come through anywhere and grab you.

My parents fighting... Breaking dishes, screaming, hitting, stomping, door slamming, etc.

Movie wise, I can't think of anything that terrified me... Or made me scream... Maybe I've jujst repressed it... Recently the two movies that scared me were Session 9 (Spoiler: the scene where the "guy" is in the asylum during the night and is being "chased" by something... There was one shot in particular when he turns around to point his flashlight, which doesn't have much power as it reaches the end of the hallway, barely illuminates this slender, dark figure at the very end looking at him... I had a nightmare about that just two days ago!), and the new TCM... Sadly, it was a scene with R. Lee Ermey that made me jump, not Leatherface...

Ah... I love the catharsis one gets after seeing a horror movie...

Have you seen Ben Hur??? A horse doesn't give a damn how big you are, if it tramples you you're getting hurt. I'm 6'4, wiry, and can run like a bastard and thankfully b/c that horse would have killed my ass.

When I was a kid, one of the local TV stations had a show on Saturday nights called Chiller Theater. They would show horror movies and had a host, I think his name was Seymour. Anyway, I would get so scared during that show, I would run to the kitchen and peak around the doorway. My parents would tell me to turn the TV off and go to bed, but I was too scared to go near the TV.

The opening to Creature From The Black Lagoon scared me most, when the Creature first raised it's scaly hand out of the water.

i was raised on a farm and every day after school we would have to feed our animals, and it took lots of time so it the winter it would get dark early. and there was this always something that i would have to walk way out to feed, it never failed. so i would try to walk out there like i wasnt scared, when in reality i was scared to death, and when i came back i would walk about 3/4 of the way till i could see the porch light then i would run like hell.

meetthecreeper,

"Saw Jaws when I was about 8 years old, afraid of frickin sharks under the damn bed. Why the hell I thought sharks would be swimming under my bed I have no idea."

That was mine as well concerning movies when I was a little kid. I KNEW nothing was under my bed, but was still scared shitless by the thought when I was a little kid LMFAO!

I also HATEEEEEEEEEEEEE snakes. I'm not afraid of them per se, but they just give me goose bumps and I don't want to be within a mile of them. I could kill one with ease and not get afraid, but I just hate being around them for some reason.

honestly when I was a kid my bro and myself watched horror movies like lil kids collected comic books... he used to get chills and whatnot but nothing ever even phased me.

Except for one low budget movie entitled DEMON WIND. Its about a group of idiots that go out to this old house or something and demons and zombies and all this shit but honestly theres this scene where this little girl grabs this chick and they disappear and all thats left of the chick is this doll and it cries or says something and it freaked the hell outta me. Don't ask me why.

The other thing that freaked me was a movie called, I believe cause I haven't seen it since I was a kid, THE SPOOKIES. Theres this guy with a hand puppet and he gets killed by a spider woman or something and I think his body deflates like a balloon when she bites him... can't remember but that shot of him deflating was cool... I mean it stuck in my mind and to this day I dream about people deflating when I touch them and stuff... its cool.

I kinda grew up with horror movies so no movie in particular really scared me, i was just drawn to liking them ya know.

I was beat up alot by jocks and the so called normal "in" crowd in my younger days, so i was kinda afraid of those type of people for awhile.
This kinda relates to Mirth's candyman story, well one time they met me after school and were all acting all friendly like so i new something was up. They were walking me down my street and were talking about the old Bloody Mary Urban Legend (the one where she died and if you say her name 5 times yada yada), well we came up to this house that was being built on my street. It was pretty much just boards and some drywall. Well they said they were all going in to explore and i was gonna get it if i didnt go with them so since we were by my house anyway i decided to comply. As i walked up towards the house they pushed me into what would be the garage and locked the door, and just as all the light went out as the door shut i saw that they had(although i didnt know THEY had done it back then) spray painted BLOODY MARY on the floor of the garage. Then it was pitch black, my friend eventually came to help me out but it was a pretty traumatic hour or so in complete darkness to a 10-11 year old.

Horror movies and dark music were always kinda my sanctuary away from bullshit like that when i was growing up.

When I was about 5 or so I used to have a dream ALL the time that I was being chased by Dracula, Werewolf , Frankenstien and the Mummy ( there was a whole group of monster/creature chasing me but thats all I could see). I would be running and running and running. Looking back screaming and all them with there arms up making all sorts of ghoulish sounds. I would run and run and run then I would fall off a cliff and wake up.

I used to be so scared to fall alseep that I used to rap myself with the covers because I was afraid that one of them would reach into the covers from underneath my bed and pull me out. I also thought that they were in my closet. I used to get so scared that I would make a mad dash to my sister's room and sleep with her.

Used to live on a corner house and there was a street lamp there that would light part of my bedroom. This was back in the late 70's back then streets weren't really lit up like they are now. Well anyway while laying there I saw Frankenstein in the corner of my room. I screamed for my parents while my eyes were locked on him and they just said for me to go to sleep. They never came to my room. Well evently I finally went to sleep and when I woke up he was gone. He looked so real that to this day I still swear that he was there.

The movie's that scared me the most was Freddy Kruger.

I remember when I was younger I was in the house watching TV and this marathon was coming on the Scifi channel, I think, it was Freddy movies. Anyways, I was young and not allowed to watch that type of stuff, but I did anyways. My dad was at the Shop beside the house working and I would sneak views from the movies (I was supposed to be outside playing). I remember the scenes of the lady getting thrown around in her sleep getting cut up, the girl being dragged down the school halls,.. I had nightmares for weeks. I ended up giving myself "cold-fears" (i was so scared I got a sick cold feeling)

But, this is in the past now. I was very young back then and now I love Freddy, he is the coolest.

Kind of like enemy's becoming your best friend type of deal.

I First watched Nightmare 1 when i was 4, my baby-sitter fell asleep and i put the wrong video in the box ''accidently'' after that i was always watching it, even though i had nightmare after nightmare and not even being able to walk down the stairs by myself unless there was a light on and my mum was behind me!

I was like that for a while until i was about 8!

Then it took me another 4 years to find somewhere i could buy the video from!

Now i have all the Nightmares!! :D
