MUMBAI: Close friends of Nafisa Joseph, who is suspected to have killed herself, believe problems over her impending marriage led to the death of the model-turned-VJ.

Nafisa, 25, the former Miss India who was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her home Thursday, was set to marry businessman Gautam Khanduja next month. But Khanduja was already married, police said.

Her friend P Ramesh Menon Friday said he last spoke to Nafisa a couple of days ago.

"It was quite apparent that she was very excited about getting married to Guatam. She had spoken openly about him for quite some time," Menon told IANS.

"She was ever so keen to settle down in matrimonial bliss, but had broken liaisons in the past, which used to depress her.

"After quitting MTV, she had formed a TV production company last year called 2's Company of which Guatam was the backbone," said Menon who had done many photo shoots with Joseph.

Another source said on condition of anonymity: "Her mom was not too happy about her alliance with Gautam who was previously married.

"There was an altercation about his divorce from his first wife, as Nafisa wanted to see the divorce papers - this was revealed to me by a police inspector."

Nafisa's mother said she had a conversation with her daughter regarding the marriage.

Menon was at Nanavati hospital Thursday night where Nafisa was taken after being found hanging from the ceiling fan in her Versova home. She was declared dead on arrival.

Her father came from Bangalore immediately after news of the tragedy.

Friends like Marc Robinson and wife model Waluscha, Bijon Das Gupta and model Sameer Soni were also present at the hospital.

Close friend and fashion choreographer Prasad Bidappa was shocked to hear the news. He said she was a very intelligent girl and he would never have expected something like this from her.

Her wedding dress was to be designed by Manoviraj Khosla from Bangalore.
