Anyone seen this movie?? Its about a 7th grade class that gets dumped on an island and is forced to fight to the death. Only 1 student is allowed to live and they are all givin random weapons to kill eachother.

Its really hardcore and i enjoyed the shit out of it. Anyone else love this movie???

Spoiler:

My favorite scene was when the crazy evil guy kills that evil girl by shooting here like 7 times as the soundtrack switches to Bach's "air on a G string" fuckin classic. Had to rewind that shit LOL

I love Battle Royale. It's such a trip... it didn't seem incredibly inventive but a great ride.

Did you know that Chiyaki Kuriyama from Battle Royale was in Kill Bill, as O-Ren's psycho bodyguard? She stole that film IMHO.

It may be hard to find a rental but the VCD should be pretty easy to obtain. Poker Industries has it for $9 here (http://www.pokerindustries.com/poker.store?page=item&sku=BATTLROYHK-VCD).

it is never going to be released in the US. However, it doesn't mean u cant get it. I got the 2-disc s.e. dvd (2nd disc is all in Japanese) for $25. You cannot get it at Best Buy. You can go on ebay and get some bootleg copies or VCDs. Either way. I thought it was worth the $25. It is brutal.

Reason why US wont distro it, is due to the Columbine incident. US has gotten very touchy nowadays with kids killing kids. (ie. Elephant) But whats even funnier is that the media thrives on showing exclusive footage of the kids doing target practice.

I also love "Battle Royale".
In Germany, the distributor "Kinowelt Home Entertainment" only released a cut version (about 12 minutes!!). In this version, the movie isn't worth watching. You don't understand many things because you don't get some important informations.

I ordered the DVD from "Tartan UK" (got it from bensonsworld.co.uk) and I really found out, what an fantastic movie "Battle Royale" is. It has a very intelligent story and the young actors play quite well.

2) battle royale 2 is a disappointment compared to the first
3) takashi miike has nothing to do with these films, the director is kinji fukasaku who did a few sonny chiba movies

One good thing about this movie is I highly doubt with the subject matter that Hollywood will try to remake it like they are with some other Asian releases.

Battle Royale is a little overrated, due in no small part to the film being an introduction to many to Far-Eastern shock cinema.

That no such wild rides involving schoolkids had been seen in the Western mainstream up until this have made the film a rather undeserved cult classic.

The plot is full of holes, the violence quite boring, and once the effect of murderous schoolgirls quickly wears off there's not much left except for a drippy romance and a bland and disappointing ending.

It all could have been so much better, and Kinji Fukusaku (RIP) has made much better movies in Street Mobster and Graveyard of Honor.

This is a weird situation. Battle Royale has NOT been released in the US. The people who own the rights don't want to liscense it for a US release. But Netflix has it. Netflix, to my knowledge, doesn't do foreign DVDs, and they certainly don't deal with bootlegs. And to double check that it hasn't been released, I checked Amazon.com, Buy.com, Video ETA, DVD Aficionado, and IMDB. Nothing. Netflix should not have this movie. But they do. And it's not all of a sudden, either. It has 6 reviews and over 500 ratings, and is on Very Long Wait (but NOT Very Long Wait: Out of Print).

But, doesn't really matter does it?
In my exp in the past, with Japanese/asian films where I've got to see both the US and Jap/asian versions, the version of the dvd from the country out of which it was released, usually has better extras, AND better trailers...I usually get the those versions unless there's no english audio and/or subtitles.
You'll find that unless it's a dodgy, cheap third party released dvd, that you'll get more out of the "original" dvd anyways...

Bit of a different situation here, though. Amazon, Video ETA, and DVD Aficionado should have information on it before it's released. There would have DEFINATELY been news that this one would be released in the states finally

The STE
01-27-2005, 08:10 PM
there is no problem. The point of the thread is that Netflix should NOT have this movie. For them to have this version of this movie, there would have to be in existance a 2 disc SE of Battle Royale that was commercially and legally released in the United States. Such a disc does not exist, and yet Netflix is carrying it. I have no idea how this is possible, and neither does anybody at 2 other message boards I go to, one of which is ABOUT Japanese movies (specifically, ones like Battle Royale)

Yeah, but if they were going to start carrying import DVDs then one would think they'd let at least the customers know, right? The STE

from Battleroyalefilms.net:
Battle Royale on Netflix: The American online rental service Netflix has, for some reason, added BR to its library, even though there is no R1 release of the title. The picture in its listing is of the UK PAL Special Edition by Tartan, which will not play on many American DVD players, which adds to the confusion. If you're one of the lucky people who has this coming to your mailbox (there's currently a long wait for the title), please let us know which version it turns out to be--the speculation ranges from the highly unlikely scenario that Tartan (which has recently opened a U.S. division) has quietly acquired U.S. release rights and released the film with no press whatsoever, to Netflix now adding import R0 NTSC titles to its library (either a bootleg, the R0 NTSC Korean Special Edition, or the R0 NTSC Tartan UK Original Version).

The mystery is (somewhat) solved! It arrived in the mail from Netflix today and it's the Korean Special Version (IE: Director's Cut) DVD, complete with extra scenes and shitty subtitles

so either Netflix might start carrying foreign release DVDs (which would pretty much crush all the similar companies that have sprung up recently) or they've made an exception, possibly due to lots of requests

I won't say the book is better because it's a book and the movie isn't, so you can't compare the two, but I do like the book better than I like the movie, and the movie is in my top 100. But all the reasons why I like the book are mostly stuff like it gives more backstory and has more detail, and books have more time for that than movies. The biggest difference is the Kiriyama and Kawada characters. Kawada is about the same, but the book version of Kiriyama is SOOOO much better.

well this would make sence. Mainly because some book based movies are shit or close to it such as The queen of the damned. O i feel sorry for Anne Rices work being gutted and sown back together as shit. I think the same of Dreamcatcher. I admit not even as closely bad but the book was much better. Any word on the comparison of A Clockwork Orange the book and movie? Ive seen the movie "Totaly killer" , But i havent had a chance to read the book.

all I know about the book/movie differences with Clockwork Orange is that the endings are a lot different. And a lot of the really great movies were books first

I have not seen Battle Royale but I know it was neck and neck at the box office in Japan when Harry Potter was showing in Japan. I heard BR2 was not as good as BR though. I am sure you can get BR at CD Japan http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/

that's impressive Harry Potter usually wipes the floor with everything for at least three weeks.

Yes, indeed ;) ! BR2 lacks of pace (it looks endless), is far less "insane" then BR and there isn't Kitano!!! It's rather boring. On the contrary BR is, in my personal opinion, a masterpiece :D! Kitano is great (he really looks mad), the original idea is crazy (all those school boys and girls murdering eachother on a desert isle with random weapons under the eyes of an entire nation...) and the starting sequence is unforgettable.

Just have a look at the site, if u haven't done yet: Battle Royale (http://www.battleroyalefilm.net/)

Great films both of them, I have the ammo box set, not the best versions but the coolest case.

Okay...I haven't seen this one, and I really want to...But, based on the descriptions I've read...How is it really any different than Lord Of The Flies?

the basic storyline follows with a few changes, but the breakdown in civil behaviour between the children is here caused by an external factor

.......and for those who didn't get that

Overrated, for those not familiar with extreme/CATIII cinema (otherwise to whom this has little new to offer in terms of 'outrageous' action and 'dubious' morals).

Yes, it is overrated, but it's still a decent film. There are far, far better Asian films out there, but you probably won't be too disappointed after watching this one.

Bump for great justice!

So apparently there's a remake (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/index.php?Show=6572&Template=newsfull) coming out. The producer is Neal Moritz, who's never made anything but total shit. This isn't a good sign. I mean, BR isn't a great movie in the first place, and I can't see them making it without seriously toning down the theme and imagery. Something tells me that a class of 14 year old kids killing each other would not go over too well with the public at large. There's a reason why this film is still unavailable in a legit Region 1 edition.

i found it boring and little prediable with shooting peolpe droping off files,

It didn't have the same impact as First movie, which shocking part when the girl get knife in head that movie was great, i wanted some more shocking stuff like, there nothing shocking in movie, it kind drag on with nothing but gun going off to me was more of a war movie then anything else

One of my favorite Japanese horror films. I bought a copy at a convention.

Another really good one is Suicide Club.

Battle Royale 2 is nothing compared to the first. In the first film you dont mind about the death scenes being long and over-dramatically acted by the young stars, in fact you relish it each time...However in the sequel, they dont have the same impact and can become very annoying and time wasting.

The movie still has good points, its worth owning if you liked and own the first. My rating for the first one is 8/10 but I only give 6/10 for the second.

both great films ...did you battle royal 2 yet ?

I try to stay away from sequels, they're very rarely ever as good as the original. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - the rest are good examples.

When a movie is original and great, the sequel just can't come close. Unless Steven Spielberg is directing it.

But, I'm guessing you saw it, is it anywhere near as good as the first?

I really liked the first movie, it was something different.

As per the second movie, I agree with this:

However in the sequel, they dont have the same impact and can
become very annoying and time wasting.
