Are you for or against the decriminalization of marijuana?
I personally am for it. The worst thing a pothead is going to do is sit around eating twinkies while watching some South Park.
I am pro legalization, not only for medical and industrial use, but also recreational.
It is my opinion that God gave us everything on this planet to use. That includes marijuana. By making it a crime to use it, I think we are making God sad. :D
That reminds me of a funny shirt I once saw. It said 'Man made beer. God made pot. Who do you trust?'

I’m into the rights of the individual, I think it should be decriminalised ... Legalised no because then the government would charge taxes on it and I don't believe the state should make money from drugs.
Smoking weed is just as unhealthy as smoking tobacco, it’s not for the government to give it a stamp of approval it should just be up to the individual to smoke what ever they like in their own home, with no fear of prosecution!

I cant see any short term harm in smoking the old weed, It's all the stuff you hear about with long term damage... but then users have a choice, it's up to them, and If they enjoy it then let them do so. Weed is hardly a 'big' drug anyway, so relaxation of the law should be ok.
during my studet years the weed flowed freely. hell I was stoned in most of my lectures, but I still did ok at Uni.
free the weed man

With that logic, God also made the coca plant and opium poppy.... and the drugs made from them KILL people...
At any rate, i agree. the worst that can happen is people get the munchies and act like idiots, which they were going to do anyway. Let the government profit off of it. They already tax the shit out of liquor.

True. But we are still processing those plants to obtain said drug. With mary, there's no processing. It's pick-and-smoke.

That all depends on the country. we have plenty of pot growing in this country, but it DOES get processed into hash on occasion. Plus, the countries that grow the coca and opium plants have plenty of people who use it just like americans and everyone else use pot.
So my point stands :)

I'm for the decriminalization of all drugs. I don't use 'em (don't even smoke pot), but I don't think it is the government's business what we do with our bodies. The laws should be in place to protect people from other people. Plus, think of all the prison space you'd free up! Fill those with the criminals who are dangerous to others.

Mine as well. The coca and opiate plants, in their unprocessed form, aren't NEARLY as addictive. There are still countries where the coca plant is used for it's medicinal purposes, mainly for dental pain as a numbing agent.
These plants, in their raw form, are not harmful to NEARLY the same degree that the processed forms are.
I'm just in an argumentative mood today.

My dad (who is a policeman) would kill me if he knew this, but I'm all for legalization of pot. Its basically the same as smoking cigarettes. If you choose to do it, go ahead. Obviously there should be some huge penalties for driving while high, but do whatever you want in the privacy of your own home.
I just dont think making it illegal is stopping very many people from doing it anyway.

You say that like booze don't kill anyone. Idiots driving drunk are a lot more dangerous to my health and yours than someone tokin' some leaf at home on the couch.
Not to mention that drinking too much can kill you even if you are smart enough not to drive. Blood alcohal poinsoning, liver problems, etc...

where'd I put my bong?
I'm for the Legalization of All Drugs. If you've ever read the Constitution of the United States, it NEVER states that the government has the right to tell you what and what NOT to put into your body. As far as I'm concerned if you wanna fuck your body up with 'heroin, cocaine, etc' that's your own DAMN business.
The only time I think someone should be arrested for drugs, is when they're trying to sell it to kids. But if we made drugs legal, we could put the drugs back into the hands of the 'prescription companies' meaning that a marijuana, heroin or cocaine user would have to register as a user, which would be good. No more druggies dying from OD's or arsenic laced drugs. No more gangbangers shooting each other over 'drug terriority' No more kids getting arrested just for possession!

just that theres so much to this is all. example, look how fucked up our meds poilcy is already. prescriptions suck
and with the philippines. the main problem is majority of the druggies there are poor or homeless. i live in mid class sub urbia but just 15 minutes away we've got homeless people all over the place.
its not so much the well off folks but these people that would be very dangerous to give drugs too..
that and america is already ranked 8th best place to live, we've gone down due to low education, work.. etc.

Canada even decriminalized it. You can go to a hash bar in Vancouver if you want!
My thinking is this... A pretty good chunk of the population smokes weed. (I've never seen any numbers, but I would say a minimum of 20%.) Now those people may lead great lives, go to school, go to work, whatever, but in the eyes of the law they are criminals because they like to smoke a joint when they get home from a long day of work. That's simply stupid.
The fact that it is currently illegal, yet so many people smoke leads me to believe that stiff penalties are not a deterent.
How about if our government pulled their fucking heads out of their asses for once and consider a change of ideas? Instead of arresting harmless potheads and then complaining about overcrowding in the prisons, why not legalize it? Register the users (18+ only), charge a tax (this could be used to reduce our enormous debt). Then, 'the man' would know who's smokin and how much as well as who's selling, not to mention taking in a tidy profit.
Now that's my view on recreational usage. Medical and industrial is an even easier arguement to make. Instead of bitching about people cutting down forests so much for paper products, let's grow hemp fields. Hemp is a faaaar more effective form of producing paper products than lumber. (Interesting side note: Reefer Madness, the movie that played a critical role in getting weed outlawed in the first place, was hugely endorsed by William Randolph Heart, who owned a newspaper company and had a good deal of interest in the lumber companies.)
The medical benefits of it are for anyone to refute. Surely you can't justify calling a deathly ill cancer/chemo patient wanting to hit a joint to ease the immense pain they are in, a criminal, can you? It has also been proven to help reduce glaucoma.
California has already semi-decriminalized it. Nevada won't be far behind, but how long until the rest of the country figures it out?

Not only that, but every time I go anywhere for the past two days I feel like I'm being followed. And yesterday I thought I heard a walkie talkie sound from the woods next to my girlfriends house and it said
"...him. Call the state department..."
That was all I heard then there was silence, but needless to say I was kinda paranoid driving home.
I hope they don't think I am some sort of terrorist just because I brought it up in a discussion forum, but the thought occured to me that after FreddyFan, they probably are keeping an eye on this site... :(
Maybe there is other reasons for the paranoia though. (See 'the great marijuana debate' thread for possible clues as to what those reasons might be. ;) )

actually you're right weed is illegal in Jamaica, I just named it to try and make a point...
guess I fucked that up LOL
Here's what I think needs to happen in America as far as drugs are concerned:
A) Be Legalised
B) Be taxed...Alcohol is taxed after all
C) Users should have to register, and be given cards identifying them as users. They should also have to be tested every so often for HIV (needles and such)
D) Quantity and Quality controlled. Dosage amounts for drugs such as herione and cocaine. Quality: NO having to worry about whether your drugs are laced with arsenic
F) Immediately release all those in prisons whose ONLY crime is possession. Frees up the prisons for REAL criminals (rapists, pedophiles, murderers, terrorists, etc.)
If the American Gov't did all these things:
A) Crime would drop, especially the homicide rate
B) Drug Dealers' markets would be virtually destroyed.
C) The taxes made from the selling of these 'now legal' drugs could be used to help those who want to get rid of their 'drug habit-addiction.
D) Prisons would be filled with REAL criminals
E) Cops would only arrest those who become a danger to others because of their 'drug' use. Not bothering those with possession.
that's all I got to say.

Love the argument Camper. I commend you on a job well done.
On another note, that's also how I like my steaks... god, I'm hungry.
Anyways, the American governments attitude towards drugs and their users is appalling. If they are going to use drugs, they are going to use them, no matter what the government does. They ONLY thing that they are doing is making these drugs more dangerous to use, as you said with the coke and the heroin. Drugs get "cut", which means that they are mixed, oftentimes with home cleaning solutions or over the counter pain killers, to create a higher volume of the drug to make more money. This is a VERY dangerous practice, and most of the time cut drugs are what kills people, not the drugs themselves, but what they are cut WITH, such as draino or amphetamines (diet pills).
They can't win the war on drugs. They are fighting themselves (Americans). They are busting their own families. They are sending teenagers to prison because they needed money, so they sell a little bit of crack on the street corner. It's BULLSHIT, and it needs to STOP.

My only real views on the weed thing is:
Before I go anywhere with this, I will point out that in pretty much any situation, moderation is a good idea, and if you can't moderate, you shouldn't touch ANYTHING.
Alcohol vs weed - alcohol brings out (by majority anyway) a much worse side of people that weed ever seems to, some drunks seem to wanna prove themselves through starting pointless fights and downright stupid behaviour, and are also more confident to drive while drunk, whereas stoners couldn't be fucked really even leaving the house, attempting to drive, or trying to prove how much balls they got...
I think if alcohol is legal, weed should also be...after all, we should at least get a choice of HOW we destroy ourselves, right?

Straight people don't know what you'll about it, they'll put you down and shut you out. You gave to me a new belief and the whole will love you sweat leaf. Try it out!
Marijuana is a great drug IMO. So many bands have written awesome songs while on this drug. Cypess Hill, Sabbath, Sacred Reich, Kotton Mouth Kings, Bongzilla, and slew of other bands.
It should be legalized IMO. Stop busting people for using herb.
Its a waste of time and money. Alcohol and cigarettes cause more harm, yet they are legal.
Let people do what they want IMO. If they fuck up their lives on drugs, then its their fault. We all have choices, I don't want anyone telling me what I can do and cannot.
Fuck all those hyprocrites that used pot and now are saying that it is bad. If you use pot in a responsible manner, nothing bad will happen to you. You may get cancer, but is that really proven.
All I'm saying is, have a smoke or two, but be responsible.
Its a damn shame that so many people are busted for weed.
I know that there are individuals that don't use this drug in a responsible manner, but should we all be punished IMO. Its like alcohol, some people become insane while others become happy go lucky.
To all those that oppose, shut up and smoke a bowl. :)

The worst thing that Marijuana can do is make you lazy and cause depression. Yes, it CAN do this by suppressing the neural pathways for Serotonin, the brains "natural high" drug that is used to give you a feeling of euphoria and well being when you achieve something good. This is your reward drug. But, if that pathway is blocked, you can crash pretty badly.
Now, Marijuana does not CAUSE this, but it can make an already bad situation much worse.

Marijauna effects eveyone differently. Some people can handle it, while others can't. Alcohol can have the same reaction.
Marijuana is not for everyone, but those who use it in a resonsible manner should be thrown in jail for using IMO.

True, the decision should be made on the basis of how it effects you personally, in term of immediate, and after effects.
This is the reason I don't drink much; If I wanna get fucked up, I'll go with weed the majority of the time, simply because alcohol turns me into the biggest asshole on the face of the planet, I usually hurt people, and have brought legal troubles down on me under THAT influence way too many times.
I'd have made the same decision about weed should the effects have been anywhere near as bad.

Marijuana is not for everyone
Completely agree....
but those who use it in a resonsible manner should be thrown in jail for using IMO.
If they are using it responsibly, in their own home, and hurting no one but themselves, and their children aren't around, why? why should we jail them?

Damn straight! If i'm smoking it in the privacy of my own home, the cops IMO have no right to arrest me for possession. If anything they should be arrested for unlawful search and seizure.
Actually that reminds me...
One of my friends got pulled over by the cops, once the cop approached his car, he was asked if they could search his car. (My friend is black by the way...Racial Profiling sucks!) He told them no. They spent the next three hours searching his car and didn't find SHIT!!! After they told him he was free to go...
he said... Thanks for wasting my fucking time, why don't you go find some real criminals!
COPS are PIGS!!

Thats fucking bullshit! me and my friends got pulled over the other day because we were wearing all black...
Cop - "Is it common for you guys to wear all black at the same time?"
Everyone else is grim and respectfull but i just bust out laughing, i couldnt help it...
Cop - "is there something funny about this"
me - "oh, well, we wear black pretty often yes"
Cop - "we've had some breakins and gang activity around here, you guys wouldn't know anything about that would you"
As he searches my car with his flashlight, (illegaly technically)
Me - *giggling* " uh.....NO, we're in a BAND!"
it was pretty crazy, im always the one that ends up talking to the cops, i dont know why....but ya, complete bullshit...

yeah I got pulled over about a year ago, in my Dodge Neon (have a Honda CRV now). I got a ticket for speeding (which I was guilty of...was going 81 in a 65mph zone). As I was about to drive off, he asked if he could search my car. I should have said no, but I was on my way to a job interview and I didn't want to be late, as I was already worried that I would be. So anyway he searches my car and as he's doing this, he starts a casual conversation with me, he actually asks me what I do for a living? HEY ASSHOLE! You're FUCKING searching my car, when I know you're not gonna find SHIT! I don't wanna talk to you about what I do for a living...go arrest some real criminal!
