Hideshi Hino is going to have more horror manga published in English than anyone. Yet, his books are not on the shelves, and he apparently just has a "cult following". Cocoro has licensed over 100 of his works, and has published five so far with four more to go this year.
Has anyone seen his books in the stores or ads about him anywhere?
Maybe he's just too strange or gross for Western taste. In the Red Snake, he shows a young woman massaging the pus out of a growth on her Grandfather's face until it bursts. I'm glad Hino works in b&w. Other grotesque scenes include licking the blood from the necks of decapitated hens, vampire snakes, and the stomach bursting "birth" of a hideous "baby." Edgy stuff.
His two "Guinea Pig" films stirred up quite a controversy in the late 80's. One was a semimal "snuff" movie so real, that it made an American SF writer lead a crusade against it!
I hope that his manga will give horror culture a new shiver.
