No one ever pays attention to the Bass Player... I have been one since I was 15 (jesus, going on 13 years......)

Here are my top picks:

1. Tie. Les Claypool and Flea
2. Cliff Burton
3. Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendancies, Infectious Grooves, and now Metallica)
4. Duff McKegan (his Bass run at the beginning of You Could Be Mine made me want to play bass in the first place)
5. Chris Squire (from Yes... LAugh all you want, listen to Roundabout, that bass fucking rocks)

i wont list myself, because even though i have always been confident that i am a very good bass player, i am about a year out of practice....

1. Cliff Burton. Always be the best in my book. His bass solos are just phenomenal (their presence at least, definitely not his technical prowess)
2. Les Claypool.
3. John Myung (Dream Theater). The best technical bassist I've ever heard.
4. Flea
5. Fieldy. Now, don't jump on me, I can't stand any Korn albums after Life Is Peachy. However, I love Fieldy's style on those first 2 albums.

Fieldy is great. He said on tv that he was very heavily influenced by flea. Most of his stuff is more percussive than actually tonal. he gets extra Kudos for being innovative.

OMG, Bass playing along with the DRUMs and not just mimicing the guitar?!?!? Get the fuck out of here.....;)

1. Les Claypool = God
2. Cliff Burton
3. Steve Harris ( Iron Maiden )
4. Billy Sheehan
5. Jaco Pastorius
6. Stu Hamm
7. Flea
8. John Myung
9. Gary Meskill
10. Robert Trujillo ( The Infectious Grooves stuff was fucking top notch, also Suicidal Tendencies)
11. Victor Wooten

Sorry couldn't name just 5, I've been a bass player for 17 years and all these guys had a big influence on my playing style...

Robert Trujillo is a fucking awesome bass player, I think his better stuff though was in Infectious Grooves.....A lot more technical stuff.
Though his Suicidal stuff was great to.....

Infectious Gooves kicked ass... The opening to Funk It Up was incredible. I wanted to be the first kid on my block that could play it (i could, kind of). Remember "Violent and Funky"? That line was nearly fucking impossible to play. i could do the triplets, but a minute into the song, my damn hands would cramp up.

This is blatantly biased.

Because Paul McCartney is one of the greatest of all time.

Just because you play fast metal doesn't mean your any good.

I can't remember his name but the dude from Primus is one of the best

Have to agree here, Paul is a fucking top notch bassist and wrote some of the most catchy and rememberable bass lines ever.

Yeah I agree on this partially, while there are some plain old run of the mill bassist in metal that do nothing but chug along with the root of the song and add no emphasis on bass fills or just have absolutely no style to them at all...

But on the other hand there are a lot of incredible bassist in metal that have created their own unique style and are just plain out fucking awesome, for instance, Cliff Burton, Steve Harris, John Myung, and Robert Trujillo...

That would be mister Les Claypool, who I consider one of the best bass players in the world ever bar none...

His degree of technical playing is fucking unreal...

Bass is Highly under-rated. And all people want to be is a guitar player because they're soooo fuckin' cool.

Dee Dee Ramone is one of my favourite. Not saying he's one of the best.

OH, one of the best bass players EASILY is Brian Ritchies from The Violent Femmes. He can bass solo on your FACE. Just listen to "add it up"

Dee Dee is a good choice! *thumbs up*

Im surprised no one has mentioned Eric Wilson of Sublime and Long Beach Dub All Stars..

Cliff Burton definatley Metallica sucked without him. I really like the dude out of Fugazi can't quite remember his name at the moment. I've just started playing the bass again after quite awhile. My band had a gig last night but we were shut down after four songs by noise control.

I'm so stupid, Fugazi's Joe Lally. He's one of the greatest and I totally forgot. I'm losing it.

Got any recordings of you're band?
