does anybody remember 'They Live' I remember bits and pieces, but I remember it's about a guy who finds a pair of special sunglasses that lets him see who around him are aliens, that have taken over earth.
i also remember the line, which I first heard in Duke Nukem 3D
'i'm here to kick ass and chew gum and i'm all out of gum!'
I remember thinking this movie was awesome, although now i'm sure it'll be pretty cheesy

I just saw this on AMC or something. LOVED IT! It's really just plain cool. Cool effects for its time, and a nice story.

... I don't know but I am pretty serious, I think it’s the movie I have watched most ... Im not saying its Citizen Kane or anything …
... But I think its the best B type movie in the last two decades ... Carpenter is a master of the B/cult movie, he mixes fun, action, horror and sci -fi with some serious social commentary …

I think he's been pretty consistent in his career and he's made the movies he wanted to make which is good...
... The movie I like least is Halloween ... but the music he did is spot on!
I don’t think there’s another modern American director who comes close in the fields he works in!
Watch "They Live" again, its a very clever film that has a lot to say and yet looks so cheesy ... I think its great the way he makes a social point without ramming it down your throat ... Romero was good at that as well, its horror, but is has a point!!

It depends what your looking for in a cult film ... I agree Prince of darkness is not one of his best, but its still a pretty good movie for its time and budget and the genres its in ...
... the fact is those kind of movies are made less now its either expensive cinema or straight to video crap ... guys like carpenter where going for the middle ground ... good fun cult cinema.
... I guess Im a fan of "they live", I would not say I was one of "Prince of darkness", I just think its ok ... theres a lot worse out there!

I guess your right about this in terms of Prince of darkness ... you either like it or you don't ...
as for worse films in similar genres
Blair witch
Troll 2
Lighthouse
City of the living dead
Darkbreed
... etc etc and theres a lot worse than those (well except maby Blair witch which is the shitiest thing I have ever seen!!!)

I like "They Live" alright and "Prince Of Darkness" was pretty good. I think John Carpenter has becoem the kind of directer that Wes Craven has been his whole career: Hit and miss all the way.
Here's a quick rundown:
Great films:
Halloween, Escape From New York, The Thing, The Fog, Christine, In The Mouth Of Madness
Decent films:
Pince Of Darkness, They Live, Villiage Of The Damned, Ghosts Of Mars, Big Trouble In Little China
Bad films:
Starman, Memoires Of An Invisible Man, Escape From LA
And that's my take on Carpenter in a nutshell.

... dont forget Vampires, the cult sci fi "Dark star" and Assult on precinct 13 which is an awesome movie!!! lets face it three bad films in that kind time is nothing ... I cant see how you can compare him to Craven, hes got no where near the quality back catolouge!!!

carpenter is more likely to try something different while craven has stuck to the horror genre. while that's not a bad thing it means plus points to the carpenter corner.

I did'nt mind Ghost of mars, but its not his best ... in a way its just a remake of the far superior Assult on precinct 13, with a sci-fi twist!!!!

I've heard that they are possibly going to do a remake of, Assult on Precinct 13. I think they should just leave it alone...thats just my opinion.

I haven't seen Dark Star or Assualt On Precinct 13 all the way through.
I said that Carpenter has become the kind of directer Wes Craven's been his whole career. Craven's go lots more bad films becaus he's always been hit and miss all the way. By decent films I mean okay, but not that great. They Live is no The Thing.

The part that gets me the most about They Live is the excruciatingly long fight scene between the two guys in the alley over the sunglasses. One wants the other to try them on and the other doesn't want to, so they fight for like 20 minutes. Absolutely pointless, but nonetheless a good movie. Oh, haha, and that guy at the end having sex with one of those things was great.:D

yeah that fight sceane was pointless but i loved when south park recreated it in the cripple fight episode
