Well, I personally thought this movie was good, but grossly overrated. Anthony Perkins was the best part of the movie, Norman Bates is the best.

Ya, the sound and music were good. When the Detective was waliking up the stairs in Bates house, then got attacked by "Mother".....that was great. Nice, calm relaxing music.....the BAM a screech of high pitched terror music......Awesome.

Bernard Herrmann's score is brilliant.

I love Alfred Hitchcock and almost all of his movies. Psycho is one of the best examples. Ive always loved hitchcocks use of camera angles and things of that nature. The shower scene is excellent. Oh, and by the way, if you havent seen psycho, see the original, and not the new version with Vince Vaughn. It sucked balls hardcore. I was very disappointed. Whatever, original is all that matters.

The sounds and direction of Psycho are great, but I still think it is way overrated. I enjoyed it, but its not top 20 material or anything.

I loved Psycho, and it is my favorite Hitchcock film ever. Anthony Perkins gave an amazing performance. I thought that the remake sucked so bad. Vince Vaughn wasn't at all convincing as a "psycho." Are you aware of the three sequels that were made after the original. All of which star Anthony Perkins. The second one is pretty decent but the one thing that I thought made the films so good was the fact that it didn't need sex to make it good. The third psycho has this random sex scene that has no purpose in the movie. In my opinion, sex scenes are only required if something comes from them. Like the character has a baby or something. However, if you like Psycho, I recommend the sequels, baring in mind, that they can't hold a candle to the original.

Nobody could manipulate the audience like Hitchcock could, there hasn't been a director past or present with his creativity and unique style. When you watch a Hitchcock movie you always have to expect the unexpected, which probably will shock you anyway :).

Not I. I've heard though that Norman was quite different, fat and lazy being the biggest difference. Sometimes a book can put a whole different perspective on things, sort of like when I read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest not knowing at first it was from the Chief's perspective :).

And so is The Return.

The shower scene is still justly famous, it is an excellent piece of assaultive montage. The murder of the private eye on the staircase, the killing of the female lead so early and the slightly prurient grotesqueness of Norman dressed as his mum all make this a classic. It does seem over-rated cause it ain't Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer but its historic value has to be taken into account.

No offense, pal, but you've got the symptoms of what we like to call "movie snob". You're hopeless. Just go for movies made after 1980, and you should be satisfied.

The answer to your question is no. Psycho does not get better after the shower scene, because it stays at an equal level of awesomeness throughout the whole film, beginning to end.

I read the book, didn't find it particularly memorable or well-written. And Norman is quite different -- he's still a mental case with a split personality, but even his "normal" self is criminally inclined. (He hasn't black out his mother's murder from his memory -- he knows he killed her but thinks he resurrected her with black magic.) This makes him less sympathetic, so the whole story is less of a dramatic tragedy, more of a simple exploitation horror story.

When I interviewed him about it, screenwriter Joseph Stefano (who adapted the script for director Alfred Hitchcock) said the only things the book had going for it were the surprise death of Marion and the unguessable twist ending.
