That's the moxie I'm talking about! You go girl! ::love::

Impressive fight by Silver Bullet against perennial favorite Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but alas, lost by one.
Strong showing by intense horror arts Nekromantik and Singapore Sling; and also lesser known Possession against the bulwark know as Evil Dead. And the Taste of Dracula was sent to Hell. = p

Damn, list is moving too fast and missed the first group.

---

Second Group picks:

1. In the Mouth of Madness

I haven't seen The Exorcist in a long time and only saw parts of it once. I guess I'm due a proper watch.

2. Psycho

I'm not the biggest fan of the original Friday the 13th. And you can't mess with a Hitchcock classic.

3. Halloween III: Season of the Witch

I love Halloween 3. I've never heard of American Guinea Pig: Bloodshock! before today. But the wiki entry with Charlie Sheen thinking the original series was a real life is crazy.

4. I haven't seen either of these yet.

5. I haven't seen either of these yet either.

6. Same as above.

7. A Nightmare on Elm Street

This movie actually scared me when I was a kid. I haven't seen Ravenous. I don't think I have it on my list either. I heard of it though.

8. Get Out

But I haven't seen Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde yet.

9. Candyman

But I haven't seen the original or remake of The Hills Have Eyes. It's on my list.

10. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives

Probably my favorite Friday the 13th movie.

Some tough competition for Mouth and Rav! I actually haven't seen Mouth. You know, I saw Prince of Darkness in the movie theatre, being a Carp fan and all, and was impressed by scenes, but a bit baffled and empty at the end, so I never bothered with Mouth, cause it seemed like Prince.

Exorcist is worth a full watch for sure. Late nite. Rav and Jekyll 31 worth a watch too. Charlie Sheen thought the Halloween series was based on a true story?

1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

First time hearing of Alucarda. Added to the watch list.

2. Poltergeist (1982)

I haven't seen Poltergeist in a long time. I only remember parts. But I didn't like 30 Days of Night that much. I remember it felt kind of generic.

3. The Ring (2002)

I don't like A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 as much as most. I hate what happens to a main character. But The Ring is one of the best, if not the best American version of a Japanese horror movie. I go back and forth attempting to decide which is best.

4. I haven't seen either of these yet.

5. The Lost Boys (1987)

First time hearing of Fascination. Sounds good and I put it on my list.

6. Suspiria (1977)

Is Zombie (1979) Dawn of the Dead?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_of_the_Dead_(1978_film)

I still haven't seen it yet. Suspiria is great though. I got a limited poster for the movie. I started a topic for it here.

http://horror.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68263

7. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

8. The Innocents (1961)

I still haven't seen The Innocents yet. I heard it's good. But I didn't like Dead Alive / Braindead at all.

9. Sinister (2012)

Sinister is one of the best modern horror movies to me. But I haven't seen Night of the Demon. I'll check it out.

10. Doomsday (2008)

I know Aliens is the better movie. It's probably my favorite between Alien and Aliens. But I have to give the vote to Doomsday just because I'll probably be the only one. And I love Doomsday. I never expected these two to face off. And Doomsday does have that homage shot to Aliens. But I know Aliens is winning this round.

Is Zombie (1979) Dawn of the Dead?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawn_of_the_Dead_(1978_film)

So the original Italian title for "Zombie (1979)" was Zombi 2, which they just did to ride on the coattails of Dawn of the Dead, which was called Zombi in Italy. So it's kind of Fulci's unofficial, unauthorized sequel to Dawn of the Dead.

Also, Alucarda is fucking awesome; hope you enjoy it!

No that Pig series. Here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinea_Pig_2:_Flower_of_Flesh_and_Blood
Oh, I got ya. Yeah, I remember that story now. He reported it to authorities.

I also didn't care for 30 Days of Night, seemed a bit aimless without enjoyable characters. Agreed, The Ring is a tight horror film. When she comes out the TV... ::EEK!:: Like Fortun said, Zombie 79 is kind of the title currently used these days, it was Zombi 2, and it's not Dawn of the Dead 1978. I liked Sinister. You'll likely be surprised by Night of the Demon, it's an untouted gem.

2. I haven't seen either yet

3. Same as above

4. Night of the Living Dead (1990 film)

I still haven't seen The Haunting yet. But Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorite horror movies. I still remember seeing it by surprise on cable when I was a kid.

5. Dead Snow (2009)

I haven't seen Fright Night yet. And I don't like Dead Snow that much. I only remember a good scene in the forest near the end. And a pretty actress.

1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

I haven't got into the Insidious series. I know I watched the first one. Perhaps reviewed it here. But I vaguely remember being disappointed by the last parts of the movie. Body Snatchers is one of those classic old school sci-fi horror movies.

2. The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Very difficult choice. My favorite Evil Dead movie is Army of Darkness. And the TV show is great. The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a horror film everyone should check out going in blank. It was recommended to me by people here. I never would have watched it.

3. Halloween (1978)

I love Japanese horror but I have to vote for the classic.

4. Hellraiser (1987)

I'm not the biggest fan of the Texas Chainsaw series. But Hellraiser is one of those must see movies.

5. No vote

I haven't seen Carnival of Souls yet but heard it's something I need to see. So I don't want to vote on this one. Especially since Army of Darkness is my favorite Evil Dead.

I really need to get into the The Exorcist series. But Halloween 3 is too much of a classic for me.

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

I'm probably one of the few that isn't crazy about the original Friday the 13th. In fact, I don't own it and prefer Part 2. That has the flashback and the beginning anyway. Elm Street actually scared me when I was a kid. It's a far better movie than Friday the 13th.

Yes! In the last 6 years of so, of the many horror films on this list that I saw for the 2nd time, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) impressed me the most. I was really riveted, and had forgotten how good it was. A lot of other films seemed a bit more unstimulating... like Dr Jekyll 1931, Eyes Without a Face, Changeling.

1. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

3. No Vote

I still haven't seen Dawn of the Dead. And I thought Get Out was overhyped.

4. Psycho (1960)

Classic Hitchcock. Although I haven't seen Eyes Without A Face but I want to soon.

5. Candyman (1992)

I haven't seen Candyman in a while. I'll probably do a double feature with the original and remake. But I remember not liking The Fly that much.
Just making sure here... you keep mentioning "Series"... you know we're just voting on the one film specified, not the series, right? OK, just checking. ::wink::

Wow, I'm really surprised about the popularity of Halloween 3. It's my personal Halloween favorite, so I can't complain.
Yeah, I'm surprised too, it was a cool film, it's personal preference, but hadn't stuck me to be quite as horrific good as Exorcist.

The popularity of a lot of these films is surprising me, like Carnival of Souls, Insidious, Autopsy of Jane Doe... that is in comparison to the films they are being compared to. I thought Carnival was cool, though I think Jacob's Ladder did the theme better. It's interesting that some of the known Evil Dead lovers are going with Carnival.

I'm a James Wan fan, and enjoyed Insidious, but personally didn't find it as wrenching as Body Snatchers. I thought Jane Doe was made well, but thought it was fairly commonplace, I mean especially compared to Evil Dead II. The visceral Candyman is a good competitor to The Fly... for me, Fly was riveting nonstop entertainment, loved it.

3. Dawn of the Dead (1978) (Get Out was like an over long twilight zone episode without the character development that you’d expect from the run time. Go figure.)
Of the newer films, I thought Get Out was both excellent and original. Not surprised it's making a good showing.

Round 2 Group B:

1. The Exorcist (1973)

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A kill your darlings nostalgia choice. I'll go with Freddy this time, but could go either way.

3. Dawn of the Dead (1978)

4. Psycho (1960)

5. The Fly
Tony Todd is awesome, but I'll go with Goldblum.

Supposedly people are just coming around to liking Halloween 3. At least that's what I read on a few horror forums and horror sites. Because it was so different and didn't have Myers. But I thought that was the best part. I always thought it was crazy good since I originally saw it either on TV or VHS back in the day.

I know. I was just talking series as something I need to start getting into. Or something I don't like that much in talking about Texas Chainsaw. But I know we are talking individual movies.

Body Snatchers is awesome though. Old school horror. There is something about the older horror movies. Maybe because I grew up watching Twilight Zone and the Universal Monsters.

For sure, no snub on the movie taken. We love differing opinions here. I didn't flavor the Shining in the past, I probably know what you mean.

Speaking of the Shining. Interesting, these are some of the "big" horror films that didn't get selected this year:

The Shining
Carrie 1976
King Kong 1933
Nosferatu
The Invisible Man 33
Shawn of the Dead
Gojira (Godzilla) 1954

The Howling

Results for Round 2 Group A:

(If roshiq doesnt vote tonight, I'm calling it and breaking two ties: I think Body Snatcher 56 is a better horror film, going psychically deeper than Insidious. And the hardest choice to date: I'm going with the effectively horrifying TCSM over Hellraiser.

5 Evil Dead II (1987)
3 The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

3 Carnival of Souls (1962)
4 The Evil Dead (1981)

4 Insidious (2010)
4+1 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

4+1 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
4 Hellraiser (1987)

5 Halloween (1978)
3 Ju-on: The Curse (2000)

Great runs for Carnival of Souls and Insidious.

Running total for Round 2 Group B:

I was with the crowd that was dismayed about Halloween 3 because I was a big Halloween fan at the time it came out. ::mad::

I liked the original Halloween as well. But I just remember feelings about Halloween 3 from back then. How out there it was with the masks and bugs. The violent robot surprise and additional twist. The question of did the bad guy win? Kind of like how Myers survived at the end of Halloween.

I wasn't that fond of Halloween 2. I enjoyed it. But as a kid I knew something about it wasn't as good as the original.

I'm going to watch all the sequels as I barely remember them. And probably settle on the first three Halloween movies. Although people keep saying that Halloween 4 is really good.

Halloween 2 wasn't as good as Halloween, no doubt, it has its low points (like the needle sequence), but it also has some high points (like the parking lot on to The Shape busting through the glass door sequence). Right off the bat, I loved the way it began the very second Halloween ended.

One of the problems with Halloween 3, is Halloween 2. If Halloween was going to be a successful halloween-themed film series, they wouldn't have made Halloween 2 as a part 2... that pretty much squashed the idea.

halloween 3 vs a nightmare on elm street 3!
That would be a good battle. Ya know the Halloween 3 theme of the anceint god, is basically a precursor to the Cabin in the Woods theme. I'd have go with Dream Warriors, enjoyed it more.

I guess that ending of Halloween is so classic and scary with Myers still out there. Surviving being shot and all those other injuries. That Halloween 2 kind of ruins it by having him walking around no problem. I like the idea that he's the boogeyman. And you are left with that at the end of Halloween. It's scary. Just like how Halloween 3 stuck with me. But when I saw these I was a kid. So I guess that helps.

This is our highest vote total so far. I'm gonna call it here. Fright Night nicks past Salem's Lot. I was a little surprised Predator inched past The Haunting; I don't think we would have seen that last tourney, well mostly because of the 13 folks who submitted films, Predator wasn't even on anyone's list.

Round 2 Group D: Results

7 Alien (1979)
2 Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)

5 Fright Night (1985)
4 Salems Lot (1979)

7 Jaws (1975)
2 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

9 The Thing (1982)

Maybe Michael doesn't escape Laurie's basement. I think the ending indicates the little girl will become The Shape... the way they show her holding the knife.

I read on HorrorDVDs people talking about how the movie was going to end at first. And what the people making the movie had in mind for the sequels. The sequel is supposed to deal with the town's reaction to the killings. Basically all three movies are supposed to take place on Halloween night. Even though the first movie ended fairly late at night. Honestly, I just don't want to see Laurie possibly die.

I can't remember a scene with a little girl holding the knife. I thought the movie ended with Laurie and her family saved by the people in a pickup truck. I watched the movie twice. I lean towards liking Halloween H20 more just because it's more fun to me. But Halloween 2018 feels like a true sequel to the original or even Halloween 2 more than H20.

1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
https://nofspodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/invasion-of-the-body-snatchers-gif.gif

Evil Dead II was tons of fun, but Invasion was sincerely scary.

2. Psycho (1960)
https://i.makeagif.com/media/10-26-2015/bR8n4g.gif

I've never been that into Halloween and maybe I'm sometimes a bit more partial to older films that still hold up.

3. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
https://68.media.tumblr.com/bfe0cdfb1a1b29c9c2e05eefa3224d8b/tumblr_o3j7m58ohp1rp0vkjo1_500.gif

This is a tough choice. Candyman is a great film, Tony Todd is a badass and I'm looking forward to seeing the remake. But TCM just has a little bit more of everything.

Will rewatch Candyman, though.

4. The Exorcist (1973)
https://pa1.narvii.com/6379/7caf62ca4e1cda0cb29452b4a916eb735a5726cd_hq.gif

Scary, legendary, still holds up,... As much as I love Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead can not compete with that.

5. I love them both and for different reasons, so... Too close to call.

A new record number of votes in this tough round...

I feel like some of these could have been the final vote, like Halloween Vs Psycho, and particularly Evil Dead II Vs Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), where ED2 takes the last 3 votes to win a nail biter. Adding the votes, I thought Candyman was going to take Texas Chainsaw, but TCM sweeps the last 4 votes... it's good to have these big votes from a wide variety of Horror aficionados. Elm St takes out perennial favorite Dawn of the Dead. Wouldn't have been shocked if Evil Dead nipped Exorcist, but the masterpiece still haunts.

You all leave me the impossible decision between Halloween and Psycho... two of my favs that are tied 6 to 6. I think Halloween has many fantastically visceral moments especially with sound and music, but I think Psycho is much more precise consistently throughout the film, punctuated with an all-time memorable ending. I vote Psycho.

That’s beautiful. It actually makes the movie look good. ::danger::

poster makes it look like its not horror haha, i can see people seeing that thinking oh what a pretty magical looking movie (which it is) and than they see the movie, and can't get past the heart stabbing scene haha

It was that Suspiria poster and an image of the opening cab scene with the colors that got me to finally watch the movie. It was my first Italian horror movie if I remember correctly. That opening scene was surprising.

I can't believe Suspiria beat Predator. But Suspiria is more horror I guess compared to Predator.

The cab scene didn't get me to watch Suspiria for the first time, which was just a few years ago. But the opening cab scene filled my eyes with beauty and wonderment. I was so onboard from that moment on. Loved it.

Also, I just rewatched Predator (just my 2nd viewing since late 80s). It was an action film, and that action wasn't so exciting this time around. It wasnt as good as I remembered. The first time I watched it, I had very low expectations, and the ending surpassed those. I think Commando is a better film. = p

I think the director loves cab scenes. At least the one in Inferno is good as well.

Commando better than Predator? That's a tough pick. I believe I went to see Predator in theaters thinking it would just be a simple Arnold action movie. The monster element surprised me. Commando is just an awesome straight 80s action movie. I would pick Predator in a contest between the two just because of the series. I love Predator 2 as well. Those two movies are like Alien and Aliens to me. None of the sequels can touch them.

I can't remember if I posted this awesome Predator and Aliens collection here.

I really didn't think I was going to have to vote on this one, but Psycho has produced a tie again (previously against Halloween). In the case of these two films, I think Psycho is more precise, but for the Horror genre I think NOTLD's realism makes for a greater horror punch. Night of the Living Dead (1968) + 1.

Those are cool posters. Like I was saying I havent seen Commando since the first time. It's on my re-list. I liked Blade Runner 2048, have to say it wasn't as memorable as the first. What'd ya think of 2048?

Commando is awesome. It's probably one of the top macho 80s violent movies. Very basic rescue the girl action story. Over the top violence that keeps getting better with every scene. A bit of necessary 80s nudity. Great lines.

Blade Runner 2049 is the best of Harrison Ford's come back performances. But it's not his fault that Star Wars and Indiana Jones were bad movies.

I don't want to spoil Blade Runner for those that haven't seen it though. I do need to watch it a few more times. It's not better than the original. Few movies equal original movies that are classic. I think only Alien and Aliens. Terminator 1 and T2. Predator and Predator 2 are in that category. But those sequels were well thought out, added a twist, or increased the stakes. Also they didn't take years to come out. I can't think of a sequel that came out years later that was as good as the original.

All the performances in Blade Runner 2049 and elements are amazing. But I guess in short the movie didn't leave me with the feeling that I had when I watched the original. Unlike those sequels that I mentioned above.

It probably doesn't help that Blade Runner 2049 has a twist that didn't cross my mind when I watched the original. But I guess the more human than human line should have made people think that.

And then there is the helper girl. Which is one of those what is real questions. Just because someone is programmed to learn and behave a certain way does that make her less real than a real person? I don't know. I need to watch it a few more times.

that spaceship hatch on the staircase ceiling is awesome!

That and the centerpiece display with the facehuggers in the containers. It's like the ultimate Alien and Predator setup. They are only missing a few pieces that I bet they probably have if they did an updated room tour.

Sure, make me decide between my three favorite films! ::sad::

All five of these films are exceptional, and I would have highly approved any of EDII, Alien or The Thing winning this round.

EDII is a blast of fun, humor, trippy psychedelic horror, through wildly creative Rami' shot direction, a fresh telling of traditional evil spirit conjuring (next to the original ED); with excellent cinematography and first rate soundtrack by Joseph LoDuca.

The Thing probably has the best practical special effects in the history of film. It's a tight, and rather faithful reimagining of Joseph Campbell's short story "Who Goes There". The shot direction is smart and effectual, heightening the paranoia and surprises.

Alien, however has an expert touch on every craft of film making: special effects, cinematography, acting, and most notably an incredibly seamless mix of music and sound effects, with arguably Jerry Goldsmith's all-time best work, creating a thoroughly enveloping ethereal soundtrack. What makes Alien standout a bit more than EDII and The Thing is its combination of story/visuals with deep symbolism, a natural and engaging group of relatable characters, with actors who engage in semi-improvisation, producing a bare exhibition of human reactions, and a complete and rewarding story narrative. And so my pick is Alien.

I'll post the Final Round today.

I only barely remember seeing parts of Exorcist when I was very young. It probably scared me with the demon in the house. That's the only thing I remember from it.

I'm going to watch the whole series. I remember a reboot or maybe TV show with a character in the desert. The scene looked cool because I tend to like old religious stuff that turns up in the middle of nowhere.

Unless I die, we'll start doing this every year, probably try to start Oct 1st.

What do you mean exactly when you said, "with the stipulation that you can not nominate a film you nominated last year"? You mean the same film can't win 2 years in a row? Or do you mean each participant can't nominate the same 5 or 10 films they did last year? Or you mean something else?

Last HDC Best Horror Film All-time was 2016, 4 years ago.

Looks like we're not getting any more votes here... too bad Roshiq, Villain and Ferret didn't come back. So I'll soon be laying out how different/same things were this time compared to last.

Got ya. It's a logical idea. But I myself am a bit of a purest, in that I say let the real winner win, so to speak.

One change I made was having folks pick 10 films instead of 5. I think that made a big difference. Many lesser famous films made some impressive runs. Seeing those highlighted alone was worth it. There's probably a few ways to twist the tourney up a bit.

And the Winner of the 2020 HDC Best Horror Film All-time is:

Alien (1979)

https://johnkennethmuir.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/alien11.jpg

Beating The Exorcist 6-4. Exorcist won the 2016 Tournament, over Alien.

Films Alien beat in the Tourney:
The Plague of the Zombies (1966)
Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
Quarter Final: Fright Night (1985)
Semi-Final: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Final: The Exorcist (1973)

This year the Semi Final Matches were:
Match 1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) -- Vs -- The Exorcist (1973)
Match 2. Evil Dead II (1987) -- Vs -- Alien (1979) -- Vs -- The Thing (1982)

Interestingly, all three Match 2 films were tied, which I had to break. Very close to choosing The Thing.

In 2016 the Semi Final Matches were:
Alien (1979) -- Vs -- Jaws (1975)
The Exorcist (1973) -- Vs -- Halloween (1978)
(And Alien beat Psycho in a pre-Semi-Final match)

Quarter Final Films:

2020 .................................................. 2016
Evil Dead II (1987) ..............................Jaws (1975)
Poltergeist (1982) ................................The Evil Dead (1981)
Suspiria (1977) .....................................The Shining (1980)

Night of the Living Dead (1968) ..............Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Alien (1979) .........................................Alien (1979)

The Shinning wasn't even selected this year. Evil Dead II, Suspira and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) made big advances this year. Carnival of Souls also made a big showing. Predator was very popular, and wasn't even the tournament last year.

In 2020 these films were the top seeds, that is, films that were chosen by more than one person in the lists of Top 10s:
4 Evil Dead II (1987)
4 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
3 Alien (1979)
2 The Exorcist (1973)
2 The Thing (1982)
2 The Fly (1986)
2 Aliens (1986)
2 Halloween (1978)
2 Jaws (1975)
2 Eyes Without A Face (1959)

2 Suspiria (1977)
2 Fright Night (1985)
2 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
2 Insidious (2010)

Quarter Final: Fright Night (1985)
Semi-Final: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Final: The Exorcist (1973)

This year the Semi Final Matches were:
Match 1. Night of the Living Dead (1968) -- Vs -- The Exorcist (1973)
Match 2. Evil Dead II (1987) -- Vs -- Alien (1979) -- Vs -- The Thing (1982)

Interestingly, all three Match 2 films were tied, which I had to break. Very close to choosing The Thing.

In 2016 the Semi Final Matches were:
Alien (1979) -- Vs -- Jaws (1975)
The Exorcist (1973) -- Vs -- Halloween (1978)
(And Alien beat Psycho in a pre-Semi-Final match)

Quarter Final Films:

2020 .................................................. 2016
Evil Dead II (1987) ..............................Jaws (1975)
Poltergeist (1982) ................................The Evil Dead (1981)

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) ..........Halloween (1978)

That was a good tournament. A lot work put in with all the images and tracking votes. Next year should be interesting. I'm glad one of my favorites won in the end this year.

A fun tournament and I got to add a few films to my watchlist.

Big tanks to sculpt for all the work.

And congratulations to Ellen Ripley and Jonesy.
