Here we go again, folks...another exciting year of death to come.
I'm calling Betty White & Lance Henriksen.
Sadly, I've been thinking David Attenborough lately too.
I think we're going to lose:
One 80's action star.
One 90's sitcom star.
One Under-30.
***and I think we're going to have one murder***
Time will tell.
So, first entry this year (that I've noticed) would be Syd Mead.
Known for his work on many sci-fi films as a concept artist...he has worked on just...fucking visually iconic movies, that all had stunning aesthetics in his amazing "what if?" visions of our worlds of tomorrow.
Well deserved of the title "The artist who illustrates the future", you may not know who he is, but there's NO chance you haven't seen some of his work realised on film as some of our favourite futuristic/scifi scenarios over the years.

These guys aren't celebrities...but they're heroes.
3 firefighters from the US that were over here in Australia to help with the fire crisis went down as their C-130 Hercules tanker (fire retardant distribution) crashed in northern NSW earlier today.
They have been confirmed to have died on site.
We have had, really, an incredibly shitty month or so with these fires...it's really, at times been like some post apocalyptic shit going on...even New Zealand could smell and see the smoke at one point.
So many people have lost their homes, animals have died in catastrophic numbers, some residents have lost their lives, as well as some of our own firefighting crew and those from abroad who have volunteered their time and safety for us.
Just when it was thought to have eased off a bit...we have smoke back...
I am sorry that this has happened for you folks in the States.
Know that your countrymen the thanks of my family...I honour these people as part of our own.
Cheers.

I believe there were 7 other people that were killed in the crash.
I'm not really a basketball fan, but, Kobe Bryant is a hometown hero. He graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA, and was drafted into the NBA right after graduation. His HS coach tried to get the Philadelphia 76ers to sign him, but, they had their sights set on Allen Iverson.
I can't even imagine the pain his wife is in, losing both her husband and one of her children. And she just had a baby not long ago.

"Joel T. Schumacher was an American filmmaker. Schumacher rose to fame after directing three hit films: St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys, and Flatliners. He later went on to direct the John Grisham adaptations The Client and A Time to Kill. His films Falling Down and 8mm competed for Palme d'Or and Golden Bear, respectively."wiki
Flatliners and A Time to Kill were excellent. Of course Lost Boys. Batman Forever was horrible.

Yeah it's funny how much he shit the bed with the Batman stuff considering the quality of his body of work.
Just not suited to it, I guess...he saw Batman as a comic book/cartoon, and went with what his impression of that would be.
Wasn't all bad...Robin was ok, Carreys Riddler was...well, Carrey-ish but at least an entertaining version of the character.
I think that "Batman Forever" kind of got a bit of an extra set of cement shoes from people forever relating it to the POS "Batman & Robin" that came after.
Funny...on/off topic...really, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin probably should have had each others title.
Though yeah, back on Schumacher - Guy gave us some great, memorable films.

R.I.PYeah, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin probably should have had each others titles. ::big grin::
Carrey is a natural Riddler, but the whole script was a mess. Sam Hamm wrote the first film, and co-writer of the second, but played no part in this one. A lot of Riddler's scenes seemed to be a Carrey performance, rather than the Riddler, but I could hardly tell where he was going half the time with that script and direction. You know, tell Carrey he's Riddler and has to do this and say that, and let him sneak his quirks in under your nose. Don't shoot a camera at him and tell him fill time.
I even liked Kilmer for Batman, but what a weird performance that was. It wasn't any Batman I know. It's like you were waiting for him to breakdown in tears, or come out the closet. The director is the guy who's supposed to call forth the character and performance from the actor. And the ending action sequences, especially the plane, just felt unrealistic and labored.
But the film seemed ill conceived from the start. Trying to create a world, and direct, like Tim Burton (and Elfman) did in the first two Batmans was not a proper job for Schumacher.
I can hardly remember Batman & Robin. Had a cool look to it, but I kind of remember it had little cohesion. Characters have to have strong and clear motivations, and in these two films it just seemed like random things happening.
Yes, I prefer to remember A Time to Kill.

The Dick Van Dyke Show was a funny show (creator, headwriter Reiner). Did you ever see the pilot for what would become The Dick Van Dyke Show? It had Carl Reiner playing the role of Rob. Netflix made it the first episode. Very interesting. It was a bit more like Father Knows Best. I guess it didn't play well, and it was decided they'd change the cast.
