View Full Version : AN " ANYTHING GOES" DEDICATED HALLOWEEN THREAD

Something Roif mentioned on another thread made me start this thread this October 1st. You can talk about all things halloween. Costumes, movies, TV shows, candies, decorations etc. Even funny halloween commercials or not so funny. Halloweens from way back or Halloweens from the future.

When you went trick-or-treating as a child, what "treats" did you dislike the most?
1. Orange and black paper wrapped peanut butter taffies: Maybe as an adult, one might acquire a taste for them, but I didn't know any child that liked them. Maybe it's a classic of elderly wanting plenty of these left behind for themselves.
https://i.warosu.org/data/ck/thumb/0052/16/1393045369289s.jpg
2. Spider Rings: The allure ran out in a couple minutes... and then a lifetime of hatred is left. I think I cut the spider off the ring for a toy and practical joke on the lucky ladies of the household.
http://styloss.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/q-150x150.jpg
3. An Apple: Thanks Dr Dentist! How... festive! I'll have to take this to the adult apple bobbing tank. "An apple on Halloween keeps the kids away!" Of course when we got one, someone had to whip across the street and say, "See that! It had a razor blade in it!"
http://www.gandsorchards.com/images/golden-delicious-apple.jpg
4. A Bad Popcorn Ball: There are good popcorn balls, especially when there might be the addition of nuts, white chocolate, etc... and there are very bad popcorn balls that are too hard to bite, unpalatable, and probably were left over from last Halloween.

I'm thinkin' the popcorn balls. When I was young, my dad would take them and they were usually delicious according to him. I couldnt fathom loving anything else that wasn't candy. When my kids were young, I usually threw out anything home made. Mean, eh?

I really like Candycorn. Like the taste and the consistency. I guess a lot of kids/people don't, but they'll sometimes mention the shape as a reason, which is a little strange. ::big grin::
In the US, they're called Smarties (smarting is the face one makes when they experience the sour taste). In Canadia they call them Rockets because... well, you have to ask a Canadanese person. ::wink::

1. Yes those were terrible. I always thought they were just old or it was me. They had that generic paper wrapping without a label and were always untouched. I don't know why people even put them in baskets.
2. I really don't like spiders that much even though I like Spider-Man. I don't like rings and I thought wearing a spider shaped ring made little sense.
3. I never liked bobbing for apples. I recall when I got older a group of us were talking about backwash if you drank after someone. The idea of sticking part of your face in water after multiple other people is gross.
4. When I was young l liked popcorn. Perhaps it was good back then or loaded with salt or special movie seasoning. These days I don't eat it and when I do I hate it when the corn isn't popped. I don't ever remember coming across that problem when I was young. But I do remember some places had good cheese popcorn and caramel popcorn was ok. But only once I had popcorn balls. I was very young. Maybe between first and fifth grade. Someone made strawberry popcorn balls and I remember they were the best thing ever. I want to try making that one day.

These look similar to a strawberry candy I used to get but I thought they were European. I'm going to look into it from your image label as I remember getting them from a new market type store back in the late 80s / early 90s. And they were good.

OH YAY this thread sounds awesome!
(Oh I was one of the weird kids that LOVED the peanut butter taffy. I knew that I was basically painting a target of ridicule on my chest for liking them, but I didnt care. I actually would wad up a few unwrapped pieces to make a MEGA peanut butter taffy wad and then just work on chewing that up.)
I absolutely disliked things like Smarties and Sweet Tarts. To me, those candies are too similar to Tums or Mylanta tablets...NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. Gross. Necco wafers as well...they skeeved me out.
Also, sometimes the toys that were thrown in for fun were gross: the worst being those damn rubber WITCH FINGERS with the gnarled knuckles and the long red or black nails. I didnt mind them so much as I hated the way they smelled. THey smelled AWFUL and made my candy smell awful in the process, lol. Plus you only ever got ONE, so it was kinda pointless lol...usually ended up just trading crap candy to one kid in the group and then he/she ended up with all the gross witch fingers lol
Oh and BUBBLE GUM. Nothing is worse than thinking youre unwrapping a hunk of candy and then you take a bite and this horrible dusty chemical coating puff explodes in your mouth and suddenly its like chewing on hardened Pepto Bismol. Crappy bubble gum in a Halloween candy bag is sadistic.
As for the worst: marshmallows. Marshmallows, in my opinion, belong in hot chocolate, smores, Peeps, and freeze-dried form for Lucky Charms. Marshmallows, especially cheap bagged marshmallows, do not survive the brutal hell that a steady cascade of candy into a plastic bucket creates. As a matter of fact, they just get sticky and melted and become nothing but a binding agent for all of the rest of the awesome candy in your bucket. No matter how cute Halloween shaped marshmallows are, you better be keeping that blasphemous substance far away from young trick or treaters and their precious collection of confection. ::devil::

Really? Parapsychology is my lifelong hobby. I've been to a Halloween Oct 31st "show" seance to contact Harry Houdini (my friend booked tickets for us)... but as the date might suggest, or ticket sales might suggest... it was totally a silly show, not serious... including a ridiculous motor rumbling in the center of the giant round table shooting up powdery smoke... ::big grin::

I've felt some bodily indicators of fear when faced with some paranormal events, but honestly, I don't fear non-corporeal beings (you know, except God)... She sees dead people on the regular. Unfortunately, they are all strangers to her so we can't verify anything. Once she did see a woman in a nightgown hanging from a rope and the next day at work a lady was off because her sister had hanged herself the night before. My sister can also tell if there is a funky presence in a house, cemetery etc.

Oh, I see. Ya, that might be something you might want to see once or twice, but not at any time for the rest of your life. I read a personal account, and saw a doc (on netflix actually) of someone who sees spirits, and they don't want to.

Soooo, I attended the Manchester Hill Seance. It was a purely for entertainment only experience in my opinion. Some people were genuinely scared and I thought they were going to have to leave. The host claimed a triple murder suicide had happened in the house roughly 35 years ago. A teenage boy had killed his younger sister, both parents and had remained in the house 3 days before hanging himself. During the seance a picture fell off a wall and the piano played a couple of times. We also had tour of the house and used a ouija in the basement. I wasn't scared and was able to figure out a few "occurances". But it was well done and fun.

Ya, when I checked him out, and even specifically the Manchester Hill Seance (he's done it multiple years), I knew it wasn't a 'real' seance, just a show, but I surely wasn't gonna tell you and ruin the scene. ::wink::
On youtube he was interviewed by a local news TV station guy, where the story is slow news day advertisement. He came right out and said the seance was a simulation. Then the newsman actually said he was there the year before and there was knocking on wall and those kinds of things. So you know what it is. Plus, like you said, he takes the title of a mentalist, which is really being honest about using psychology to fool people for entertainment purposes. He even demonstrated how he 'fools' people with the newsguy.
Glad you had fun! How'd you sister hold up?

She was fine. That actually gave me a bit of a clue that the house had no "tragic or evil" past. She would normally have to leave a room if things were pulling at her or she sensed something. But she had a lot of fun too. It's a unique experience.

Saw a cute production with the kiddos last night. The Great Big Boo. It had live characters that interacted with characters on the movie screen. My granddaughter went as a werewolf and the werewolf character came up and made a fuss over her. It was a fun romp for all the kids there.

Almost missed out on scaring trick or treaters cause of a damn stomach flu, but I made it through the night! Burnt out a touch early, but the crowd had died down to little to nothing by then. We get less than a hundred visitors (like 60 or 70 something I think?) around here being more out in the country. And that's going to my friend's house cause there are literally no trick or treaters that come by my place. It makes me sad.
I wouldn't have lasted 5 miles away...superstitions.

masks made outta horse skulls,..
That's been on my to do list for a while now. Been really wanting to do it lately, but I don't have a big enough skull I'm willing to sacrifice for the project.

I've wanted to celebrate Dia de Muertos since I was in middle or elementary school. Wasn't raised the least bit Hispanic though so it felt weird to want to try celebrating even on my own. But it sounds like such a good time, and I have so much fascination/respect for the dead it's just taunting me to join in the festivities!
