I just watched Train to Busan and was well-impressed. As you know , 80's horror is my thing really. I'm not even sure when this hyper Zombie came about....was it 28 Days? I think I enjoyed the slow moving Zombies of times gone by. Though the challenge of dealing with the speed of the new Zombies also throws a good scare at you.
Anyone?

Fast Z's or slow Z's, the undead are some scary fuckers.
The first "fast" zombies I can recall are in Return of the Living Dead, but I imagine someone here can cite an earlier example.
I'm totally fine with the quick Z's and they can make for some pretty good frights, but the slow ones really get to me. I liken it to the tide. It just keeps coming. No matter how many sandbags and barriers you set up, the water WILL do what it wants and go where it chooses. A slow Zombie outbreak is the same concept. Hide from them, run, fight, board up the house and stay in the basement with Mr. Cooper. Do whatever you want, but the Z wave won't be stopped. With the slow undead, the terror mounts as opposed to being a sudden rush.
I love Zombie flicks no matter the type of Z, but maaaaaan do those slow creepy relentless ones bug me!

Yep in ROTLD they defo moved faster. The ones that are even newer have this herky- jerky almost rabid movement like they're on speed.
I found that I almost had an empathy for the old Zombies. They were so hapless and clumsy but yet relentless like Michael Myers who never even broke a sweat.

Ya, Train to Buscan was cool. It's a different scare to have fast zombies... a heightened freak, where the slow is more depressing and despairing. I felt sympathy for the zombies in NOTLD, especially the naked woman, because she didn't know she was naked... you could feel the sickness and despair.
Return of the Living Dead had a mix of slow and fast, mostly slow.
28 Days Later 2002 was before Dawn of the Dead 2004, pressing the fast zombiea.

Good job! That's pretty spot on. I mean nobody talked about Return of the Living Dead zombies being fast at the time.

No, I meant isn't 28 Days some rom-com or something?

Earliest example of 'fast' zombies I can think of is Lenzi's Nightmare City which came out in 1980 (so it predates RotLD by 5 years).

NIGHTMARE CITY 1980
So I watched this. Took a bit to figure out if they were indeed zombies because I wasn't sure if there were any undead. There were. And they were fast as a human could be, not the frantic fast, and ugly as all get out. Again the fast zombies filled me with anxiety.
