I'm starting a collection and asking an opinion on what horror movies that are worth purchasing. As of right now I'm collecting 70s and 80s horror. Respond to this thread and give me suggestions. Thank you! ::cool::

I would probably recommend getting the first of all the series like Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Fright Night and The Lost Boys, just to name a few.

I played this game when I first started getting into things. Actors, genres, etc. But then you realize that a lot of the movies you buy just because they relate to that one thing aren't really what you expect or as good to you as others build them up to be.
My opinion, check them out online first. If you like it, buy it. I had Netflix for a while and I got the chance to try a lot of movies and the ones I liked (for example: Frankenstein's Army) I bought. It ended up saving me a lot of space that I really don't have because there were a lot of movies I had the chance to watch before buying that ended up being complete duds.

The movies worth purchasing are the ones you enjoy. Not the ones on lists just to be a "collector." I don't even own complete collections of series like Friday the 13th as much as I like it as I'll never rewatch some of those movies.

Thank you for suggestions. I looked up movies that I remember watching as a kid and there's others I'm looking into. A few that were mentioned I've watched but don't own yet. One that I want to buy is Wes Cravens horror movies. I only own Nightmare On elm street collection as of right now. The one I'm looking to buy is Videodrome. ::cool:: Think it's neat that it came out the year I was born.

Hopefully that includes 'New Nightmare'. A surprisingly enjoyable film. I own it and a few other Craven movies.
- Shocker, not a bad flick, but not very special either.
- Hills Have Eyes is my favorite Craven movie. Don't bother with the remake, original all the way! I did see a sequel some time ago, don't remember a lot about it, but I didn't hate it.
- Cursed (of course), I like it, although I know a lot of people don't care for it. The story behind it is disappointing because the effects were originally a lot better and Rick Baker actually worked on it, but the footage was lost and they didn't have the time/money to reshoot it, so they had to use a lot of CGI for the werewolf. It's a real shame.
- Scream's a classic. I like the sequels too, but they drop in quality and excitement as they go on as they're mostly repeating the formula from the first movie...

Yeah only the first and last Scream movies for me. I don't need to see the other ones again.

I don't even remember the fourth movie that well. If anything, it's worth watching for the most epic line in a remake of all time:

Thanks for your suggestions. ::cool:: I appreciate it greatly. I bought It the 90s version and I'm placing an order on Amazon. I love there deals on there and it's hard finding the DVDs I want in stores. Love John Carpenter movies and I own quite a few. Every Halloween and every few months I'll buy new movies and add them to my collection.

If you run across the original Dawn of the Dead blu ray grab it. Hard to find right now at a decent price. Also, Shout Factory has some great rereleases with killer extras definitely worth checking out.

I can say that The Thing Shout release is awesome. And the Escape from NY Shout release is by far the best blu ray version u can find. I also have Night of the Demons which is again completely awesome. I'm guessing most of these Shout releases rock. Check em out.

Wow! Thank you so much for this! I'll add it to my bookmarks now. Yeah I'll definitely buy Dawn Of The Dead on blu ray. I hated the remake. That's one of those zombie movies that you just don't forget about.
I've never seen Night of the Demons before. I remember seeing it at Blockbuster when I was younger. Believe I never rented it out because I was scared by the cover, lol. Now I'm planning on going back and watching movies that I've seen and checking out movies that I didn't watch at the time since I was quite young and scared by certain things. My first horror movie I've ever seen was Night Of The Living Dead and I loved it.

Night of the Demons is cheesy but so good. Love that movie. Just make sure it's the 80s original as they remade it and the remake is lacking. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093624/
Dawn of the dead blu ray is $120 on Amazon. So heck of an investment if you can find it cheap.

If you’re into horror/sci-fi films then I definitely recommend getting the original Alien by Ridley Scott. That movie set the standard for so much in the horror genre - PLUS you get to enjoy the art production by HR Giger, probably the best dark artist of our time.

Yeah I saw that. I'm not willing on spending that much. I hope they come out with it again and they have it for blue ray with some added extra's or something. One day I was so bored and added a bunch of horror movies to my wish list. Night Of the Demons looks interesting and I never saw it before, so it be great for me to watch horror movies that I haven't watched yet. As a kid, the demons on the cover always scared me, lol.
