I'm probably a lot older than you, but, I remember watching all the old B movies when I was a kid. Them!, The Giant Gila Monster, stuff like that.

Yeah I saw many of the Atomic Giant Creature movies. I never saw Them! though. I never could find it.
If you ever get the chance, watch it. Lots of cheesy goodness!

The only people who managed to pull off the whole atomic creature gig were the Japanese. But that's probably because their ideas were thought out before commencing the film. I love Godzilla vs Gidera.

More "family-friendly" horror.
Garfield's Halloween Adventure
Halloween Tree
Gremlins
Return of the Living Dead
Beetlejuice
Goosebumps
But look, you can watch any horror with kids. People, just laugh loudly at the scary parts and make the film into a comedy. I watched Cannibal Holocaust during my diaper changes.

Let's NOT go there.
My teenaged brother was more interested in the punk chick dancing nekkid on the tombstone.
About every straight male is interested in that part.

Any specific age? When I was a kid (7-15) I watched pretty much everything. My son now (10) is working his way through all of the great slashers with me. We have watched all of the NOES movies, all of the Friday movies, all of the Alien movies, all of the Halloween movies, basically everything good. The Ring actually scared the hell out of him. He thinks the 80's movies are more funny than scary.

We haven't gotten into them yet, but not because I have been avoiding them. I don't think I worry so much about gore, I loved the saw series and we will probably get into them in the next year. There is something differently disturbing about Hellraiser that I am not sure if he can handle yet. It may be the sexual aspect, maybe its that I cant seem him understanding it yet? Like sure I make him cover his eyes when tits pop up in Friday the Thirteenth, but I'm not sure how to explain the whole pain for pleasure aspect of Hellraiser. I want him to understand the movies and not just sit next to me as an excuse for me getting to rewatch all of the classics.

Wow, am I the only one starting seriously to watch horror movies with like... 18? xD My parents didn't want that I watch horror movies, I remember when the Blair Witch Project was coming to TV when I was like maybe 11 or 12 and they sent me to my room while they were watching and afterwards told me how horryfying it was and how good that I didn't see it. Maybe until the age of 10 I was only watching cartoons, I was not interested by live action movies, I found it boring to see actual people in the TV, and during my teenage years I was not watching horror either cause my father despises them and when they were shown in TV I was already in bed sleeping. So it was only starting when my parents divorced when I was 17 that I watched some movies with my mum in TV, but in Germany horror movies are not often shown in TV xD
Now my girlfriend, a horror junkie herself, makes me discover my love for the genre. But yes, I am actually very pissed that I seem to be the only one not watching horror movies as a child xD Wish my parents would have been like you Jake.

Speaking for myself, I'm a lot older than you, Goathead (57). So, when I was a kid, the movies that were coming out weren't as graphic as the movies 10 years ago. The worst one was The Exorcist (which still scares the shit out of me today). I grew up watching the Hammer films, the Saturday afternoon horror movies on TV were always the old Universal and giant creature movies. I actually don't care for the slasher films. I don't equate gore with horror. It's just gore. I prefer creatures/monsters/spooks, etc. There have been a few newer movies that I like, but not many.

Horror movies the afternoon? Awesome. I first came in contact with Universal movies like maybe three years ago caused I bought a Bluray Collection of Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man and so on...shame we don't watch that so often, my girlfriend doesn't like black and white movies :/
But still, there were not only gory horror movies in TV when I was a kid, but my parents didn't let me. I think my first horror movies that I watched were Final Destination and Darkness Falls and it creeped the shit out of me. I am not sure if the infant mind is able to digest the happenings in a horror movie (Universal films aside). I don't know how it's like in America but in Germany horror movies have an age restriction of 16, sometimes 18 if it's gory. France is not so strict though (living in France now), here horror movies can be seen mostly with age of 12.

Yeah, I miss Saturday afternoon TV, too. Although, this new channel, Comet, seems to be picking up the slack.
Up All Night isn't ringing a bell. When was it on? If it was the 80s, I was too busy protecting my country and getting drunk every night. ::big grin::

That discussion about the great horror once available on TV is making me drool. It's akin to the misty feeling of regret I have for missing out on drive-in theaters. I grew up in video rentals, but these, alas, are gone. The great advantage of these means of seeing movies was that you had to rely on chance. Usually you'd just find garbage, but occasionally you'd find something great you'd never have found unless you were physically going through some kind of stack of videos or sitting through a double feature. Of course, I'm a romantic...
Ah, yes. I'm of the drive-in generation. LOVED going to the drive-in when I was a kid! I still miss it.

I fondly recall USA's Up All Night. It kept me out of trouble on the weekends.
Ya see, it debuted when I was probably 26 or 27, and trying to get my shit together after years of having too much fun at my own expense. I wanted to spend nights at home and the bizarre, fun shit that show ran was a savior.
I remember Rhonda Shear hosted, and at some point Gilbert Godfried took over for her.
The first night I watched they played Nightmare Sisters followed by Sorority Babes in the Slime Ball Bowl- A - Rama.
I was hooked.

Man, are there still hosted horror shows or horror presentation shows anywhere on TV? Surely there are. Although usually that kind of thing was local, and I don't suppose there's such a thing as local television anymore.
They were still running Mystery Science Theater when I was a kid, but that's sort of different. Elvira too. I was pretty traumatized by The Brain That Wouldn't Die.
Word is M. Night is working on bringing back Tales from the Crypt as a sort of mashup anthology. It wont be old school b movies like Up All Night was but I am getting intrigued the more I hear about it. Check out the link.
