Last week reports emerged that a coven of clowns are trying to lure children into woods and scaring people in Greenville, South Carolina.

Mystery clowns bring fear to South Carolina town

Residents of a small town in South Carolina have been told to call the police if they see a clown, following reports that people donning luminous noses and oversized shoes may be trying to lure children into a nearby woods

Parents are on alert after a number of mysterious sightings of clowns standing near basketball courts, in woodlands and under streetlights in and around Greenville.

Ryan Flood, a master deputy with the Greenville County sheriff's office told the Telegraph that they were taking the reports very seriously.

"These kids have notified their parents they saw these clowns near the woods. The clowns had lasers and a lot of cash," he said. "Our view is to take it seriously in case there is someone dressed as a clown trying to lure them away."

Mr Flood said that their investigations and patrols had found no evidence to support the claims yet: "We haven't found any clown costume stuff or irregular footprints or other indicators," he said.

But police have begun daily patrols near Fleetwood Manor Apartments, where a number of parents said their children had come home with stories of speaking to clowns.

There have been "a lot of complaints to the office regarding a clown or a person dressed in clown clothing taking children or trying to lure children in the woods," the administrators of Fleetwood Manor Apartments wrote to residents in a note slipped under their doors.

Donna Arnold, one of the residents, said she called the Greenville County Sheriff's Office because her son told her he had seen a clown behind the basketball court.

“I thought my child was seeing things," Mrs Arnold told a local news channel. "And then the next day I had about 30 kids come up to me and say, ‘Did you see the clown in the woods?”

The sightings began earlier this month when a resident, who is not named, told the police that her son had seen clowns “whispering and making strange noises” in the nearby woods, according to an incident report.

The resident said she later saw “several clowns in the woods flashing green laser lights.” The figures then ran away into the woods. And then, the following night, at about 10.30pm the woman said that her elder son heard "chains and banging" at their front door.

A day later, on 20 August, at around 2.30am another resident said she came across a “a large-figured clown with a blinking nose", standing under a post light near the garbage dumpster area.” She said the clown waved at her so she waved back and kept walking.

Police however also interviewed children who told them clowns tried "to persuade them into the woods further by displaying large amounts of money."

The children said they believed that the clowns lived in a house near a pond at the end of a trail in the woods.

To reiterate, apparently it is not just one lone wolf having fun but a coordinated and planned group effort:

She said that the clown "waved at her and she waved back while she made her way to her residence safely," according to the incident report. "The suspect did not approach her or harm her."

I figured this was viral marketing or an isolated event. Then I see it occurred again yesterday elsewhere in South Carolina. The sightings are spreading statewide. My contact in SC is saying they have been sighted at three different apartment complexes.

South Carolina clown sightings starting to spread

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating a rash of incidents involving clown sighting at apartment complexes and other areas of Greenville and Spartanburg counties, according to WHNS.

Both the Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Sheriff’s Office have open cases and the Spartanburg Police Department confirmed Thursday that a clown sighting had been reported at an apartment complex there.

Captain Art Littlejohn with the Spartanburg Police Department said officers were called to Canaan Pointe Apartments Wednesday night for reports of a suspicious person. The complainant, a woman, told officers that a person dresses as a clown was standing in her back yard.

She snapped a photo and the person ran off. Littlejohn said the responding officer tried to view the photo on the woman’s phone but the image was too dark to make out.

Deputies in Greenville County said the clowns were initially seen in wooded areas, where they reportedly tried to encourage children to join them, but the situation escalated to reports that clowns were also knocking on the doors of homes.

New clown sighting in Spartanburg, standing in backyard

There has been another clown sighting. This time in Spartanburg.

Police responded to a suspicious person call last night around 10:25 at Canaan Pointe Apartments.

The caller said the person was dressed as a clown and was standing in her backyard.

She said she took a picture of the clown and he ran away.

Police say the photo was too dark to make out an image.

Police weren’t able to find the clown.

Finally this afternoon I read that a masked clown is chasing people at a bus stop near a wooded area in Ohio.

Police will be monitoring a north Columbus bus stop this morning after one student said a person in a clown mask chased him with a knife.

The 14-year-old boy was headed to the bus stop Tuesday morning near Sandalwood Place on his way to school at Columbus North International School. He said around 6:15 a.m., a guy in a clown mask, dressed in all black, chased him with a knife.

Moms in that neighborhood said they’re reminding their kids to pay attention and follow their gut.

“I thought it was crazy!” said mom of two Tombi Williams, who lives in the neighborhood where it happened.

And in a Chicago cemetery a few months ago, another clown was caught on video:

A clown was recently sighted in a Chicago cemetery late at night, raising questions and alarm among many locals. A couple saw and recorded the brief encounter with the colorful creeper. As Dave Savini of CBS Chicago reported:

“The cell phone video tells it all: A person dressed in a clown suit, trespassing at historic Rosehill Cemetery in the dead of night. Julia Graham says she was ‘freaked out’ at the figure as it ran toward the main gate. She and her husband were driving by around 10 p.m. ‘When we get closer, we realize it’s a clown, which is super weird,’ she says. The first picture her husband snapped was of the clown scaling the 7-foot-tall gate at the Ravenswood Avenue entrance.”

The clown apparently stood in front of the cemetery waiting to be illuminated by the headlights of a passing car. Once he (or, possibly, she) was seen, the clown paused, waved slowly for maximum creepy effect — likely inspired by the famous scary film clown Pennywise of Stephen King’s novel and TV miniseries “It” — then scaled the gate and ran away.

Officials investigated and found no vandalism in the cemetery — just a clown waiting for an audience.

Clown tries to lure kids in Winston-Salem, two clown sightings reported

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Winston-Salem police say someone in a clown costume tried to lure kids into the woods Sunday night.

The incident happened in the 1200 block of East 29th Street off Hwy. 52 about 8:30 p.m.

The “clown” was described as wearing white overalls, white gloves, red shoes with red bushy hair, a white face and a red nose.

The suspect allegedly tried to lure the kids with treats. The suspect was reportedly seen by two children and heard, but not seen, by one adult. The suspect fled the area when officers arrived.

A second clown sighting happened just after midnight in the 1600 block of Hope Lane, two miles from the first sighting. Officers attempted to locate the subject but were unsuccessful.

Both spots where clowns were reported are in very residential areas near parks/woods.

Third clown sighting in Piedmont Triad, this time in Guilford County

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Greensboro Police on Tuesday morning received a call about another clown sighting in the Piedmont Triad.

The sighting occurred at The Park at Oakridge apartments off Old Oak Ridge Road not far from Interstate 73. A man said he saw a clown near the wooded area behind the complex at about 10 a.m.

Chris Bass told FOX8 he lives at the complex with his wife and two children. He was on his balcony when he spotted a man in a white mask, red curly hair, yellow dotted shirt, blue clown pants and clown shoes in the wooded area.

Bass tried to chase the clown but could not catch him. He called his actions his "fatherly instinct."

Tuesday's clown sighting comes after someone in a clown costume tried to lure kids into the woods Sunday night in Winston-Salem. A second sighting happened about two miles away later that same evening.

Fourth creepy clown sighting reported in Triad, this one near Walkertown

A woman said a clown wielding a machete tried to lure her into some woods near the intersection of Phelps Drive and Morrell Road near Walkertown.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Monday, and comes on the heels of two reports of clowns trying to lure children in Winston-Salem.

In the latest report, the woman said the clown, who was male, had red bushy hair and a red nose, and was wearing black gloves, a black tie and white shoes, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday. He was holding a machete and tried to get her to come closer to him.

When the woman refused, the man ran away. Deputies searched for the man, but were unable to find him.

Three more reports today.

Everybody loves a clown - unless it's hovering in the woods at dark.

There were two such reports in Cumberland County on Tuesday - one in Fayetteville, one in Hope Mills - and another in the Scotland County town of Laurinburg, authorities said.

Nothing was found after investigations by lawmen.

In Fayetteville, someone called police about 10 p.m. Tuesday and reported there were clowns in the area of Fillyaw Road and Applewood Lane, less than a quarter-mile from North Reilly Road.

The caller said the clowns were in a wood line and trying to flag down vehicles, said Officer A. Cannon, a police spokeswoman. They were described as wearing red clown masks and brightly colored vests.

But when the officers arrived, they were unable to locate any clowns.

Parents on alert after clown sighting

Creepy Clowns have been making headlines across the state of North Carolina, and now a neighborhood in Wilmington says it is happening right where many children play.

There have been at least two reports of a person dressed as a clown trying to lure children into the woods of the Tidewater Townhomes.

"As a concerned parent, I'm not going to test and go see, because it could be danger, you know I don't want nobody's child to be in danger," said Maretha Brown-Lewis. "I've been an educator for 14 years, never in my life have I had children be in danger, because if I could protect them I would, I am the neighborhood mom."

Parents are concerned for their children, and management says they have taken every precaution they can. A letter was sent to residents Tuesday about the clown encouraging them to call the police if they see anything.

Nation on Edge: Man arrested for reporting false "creepy clown" sighting....

A North Carolina man who told police someone dressed as a clown had knocked on his window at night landed in jail on Friday after admitting he fabricated the story, the latest twist in a string of such reported sightings in recent weeks.

David Wayne Armstrong, 24, described to Winston-Salem police how he had chased the clown into nearby woods, but authorities said in a statement he had lied. He was arrested on a charge of filing a false police report.

Winston-Salem police also said Friday it had found no evidence to substantiate a report earlier this week of a clown attempting to lure children into a wooded area by offering them treats.

King, whose 1986 novel "It" tells the story of a supernatural being that appears as a clown to terrorize the residents of a small Maine town, told the Bangor Daily News that fear of clowns touches a nerve with children and adults alike.

"The clown furor will pass, as these things do, but it will come back, because under the right circumstances, clowns really can be terrifying."

Clown sightings making their way westward.

YUMA, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -
There has been another creepy clown sighting, this time in Yuma.

While some say the costumed characters have become a real nuisance, police say there’s still very little they can do to stop it.

“I mean, it’s pretty scary,” one resident said. “He doesn’t do anything but he’s still kind of scary.”

A photo posted to Facebook shows someone biking down Fourth Avenue wearing a Department of Corrections jumpsuit and a clown mask – a popular new trend used to scare people around town.

“As long as they don’t harm anyone,” the resident said.

Police said they have not heard of this happening before in Yuma, even with some citizens frightened.

“I’m not a fan of clowns,” the resident said. “I hate clowns. I’m really terrified of clowns.”

One year at halloween , it was a little later in the evening for trick or treaters but the doorbell rang and I opened the door and this "person " was just standing there wearing a pretty scary old man rubber mask. He didn't say a word, just stood there staring at me through the screen door. I waited and he still didn't speak but opened up a bag for candy. I dropped a piece in and he just turned and left. It was unsettling and I felt kind of vulnerable.

DUHRING, W. Va. — Call it a gimmick, call it a prank. Call it a bad promotional effort to plug an upcoming horror movie. Whatever it is, it’s not the clown making balloon animals from your child’s birthday party.

A photograph of a creepy clown standing along a rural West Virginia road is creating a stir on social media while leaving some area officials and residents anything but laughing.

The clown was photographed standing roadside about two hours south of Charleston, West Virginia, in Duhring, West Virginia at night — just weeks after similar clown sightings in North Carolina and South Carolina gained national media attention. The photograph in question has since gone viral, having been shared via Facebook more than 700 times. It also was shared with the county sheriff’s office.

Clown cult puts two schools on lockdown....

Creepy clowns put two south Alabama schools on lockdown

Several cryptic posts from the Facebook page of a group known as the 'Flomo Klowns' put two Southern Alabama schools on lock down for a while Thursday morning.

The Flomaton Police Department received information from a parent that her child had been sent threatening messages on Facebook from the group.

After confirming the threat, the Escambia County School District put Flomaton High School and Flomaton Elementary School in Atmore on lock down this morning. The lock down was lifted at 11:30 a.m.

Earlier reports said that the clowns were sighted near the schools campus, but Knott said that report was inaccurate.

The hysteria came after the group posted these two updates on their Facebook profile earlier Thursday morning that have now been deleted.

Clown sighting reported in Piney Flats near apartment complex

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a clown lurking near an apartment in Piney Flats Thursday.

According to Kristen Quon with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 11pm Thursday after a caller reported seeing a clown lurking near Poplar Ridge apartments.

The caller reported seeing a clown waving at the end of a parking lot, telling deputies when he tried to approach the clown, it ran into a wooded area.

Deputies responded to the scene, but did not find anything.

Officials said they are keeping an eye out in that area to ease people’s concerns.

If you see anything suspicious you are asked to call police.

Clowns spread to state of Kentucky.

After reports of creepy clowns trying to lure children into woods in South Carolina, Jamie Hill posted a photo of a clown she claims she spotted on the 192 highway in the city of London, Kentucky.

She explained: “So, I was a little scared to post this because I didn't think anyone would believe me until Kelly Hill [a Facebook friend] told me that one of her friends just had seen a clown here in London.

“And I was out tonight and was headed back home on 192 and saw this. Now, it's not a really good picture because I couldn't stop, there [were] people behind me.

Clown warning issued in Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) - Apparently, Tennesseans need to be on high alert for clowns.

A warning was given by the Tennessee Department of Safety and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) on Saturday. The agencies took to Twitter posting, "Watch for clowns in your area. They could be child predators seeking kids" and "Watch for clowns trying to lure children into the woods. They are possibly predators."

Kentucky police have arrested a man dressed as a clown lurking in a wooded area amid a wave of clown reports in at least six US states.

Jonathan Martin, 20, was charged with wearing a mask in a public place and disorderly conduct in Middlesboro.

He was found at about 0100 EST (0600 GMT) on Friday in "full clown costume" and mask crouching among trees by an apartment complex, according to police.

Recent reports of clowns trying to lure children into woods have sparked alarm.

Police have warned individuals against dressing up in clown costumes, adding it could lead to criminal charges.

Clown sights spread to CO, FL, VA

Reports of “killer clowns” have emerged in three new states, as Virginia, Florida and Colorado struggle with Internet rumors and reported sightings that have left several towns shaken.

Residents and authorities in Palm Bay, Fla., have been on high alert since a resident reported seeing two “creepy clowns” staring at her from across a road as she walked her dog. And in Marion County, Fla., deputies are concerned after it emerged that a Facebook viral video, depicting a clown standing silently on the side of the road in the dark, had been filmed along a main thoroughfare in the area.

The video has more than a million views on Facebook.

In Henrico County, Va., a mother and daughter captured a “creepy clown” leering at them from another car during rush hour.

Hampton teen arrested for soliciting clown to kill teacher

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A 13-year-old Hampton girl is in police custody today for allegedly reaching out to a person on social media to kill one of her teachers.

Police say the person she contacted was using a clown image as their profile picture as well as their alias. She allegedly reached out to this person to murder a teacher at Davis Middle School.

“The profile that she contacted actually was using a clown as a profile picture and also using a clown related alias,” Officer Ashley Jenrette of Hampton Police said.

According to police, a dispatchers received a call Sunday evening about a threat being made on social media.

The 13-year-old girl arrested in this case has been charged with threatening to kill by electronic message. She is still being held in police custody.

FORT WAYNE, INDIANA – A man dressed as a clown was shot on the city’s south side midday Sunday. The shooting was reported just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday at 4801 Plaza Dr.

Fort Wayne police were called just after 10:30 p.m. Sunday to an address at 4701 Plaza Dr., near Standish Street just south of McMillen Park, on a report of a shooting there. When police arrived they found a man in a clown costume shot in his head in critical condition.

FEAR: Schools ban clown costumes, other "symbols of terror" ahead of Halloween

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut school district is banning clown costumes and any "symbols of terror" during this year's Halloween season as authorities investigate the authenticity of a number of clown-related social media posts.

New Haven Public School officials said Monday principals and building leaders have been requested to ban the costumes until additional information is available.

This comes amid an investigation involving police into an account on the photo-sharing social media site Instagram. The account uploaded four photos showing menacing-looking clowns with captions telling several area schools to "watch out" and "wait and see" whether the alleged threats are fake.

School officials say there's no indication the incident poses any real threat to students at this time.

A story that appears to have gone under the radar, maybe to avoid mass panic, is that there has allegedly been a clown-related murder. Police in eastern Pennsylvania are trying to figure out who stabbed a 16-year-old to death during a fight that broke out after a person showed up wearing a clown mask, Fox News reported last week.

“We urge anyone who was there to contact the Reading police,” Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams told the Reading Eagle. “Someone was wearing a clown mask and a fight broke out. Anyone who knows anything about this, please contact the Reading police.

It appears that the clown attempted to lay down his weapon before the pummeling occurred, but was deemed unforgivable by the assailant.

Clown Clings To Back Of DDOT Bus In Detroit [GRAPHIC VIDEO]

DETROIT (WWJ) – A video a clown hitching a right on the back of a Detroit Department of Transportation bus is going viral.

The video was taken Saturday by someone riding alongside the bus. It shows a daredevil clown in a white hospital gown and menacing mask with bright pink hair clinging onto the back of the bus.

It’s not clear where the video was taken, but the bus goes over train tracks as the clown holds on for dear life. It’s been viewed more than a million times.

An investigation is ongoing.
