Unsure if there is a thread about this already, but I thought I'd bring it up.

I've always assumed that there were no real snuff films, I thought the genre was supposed to be fiction like the rest. Well until recent years. Though snuff is a term that has been around for some time, is there really no old snuff films? Are they all actually fake? I'm not talking about all the videos that has been going round in the 2000's (Luka Magnotta, Two Guys One Hammer etc.) I'm talking old . Are snuff films actually something new, but just using an old genre-name?

FYI: I'm not looking for some sadistic reason, just overall curious since the term is quite of age.

to be a snuff film it has to be a real murder and made for profit or to be circulated for entertainment so it can't just be a death that was taped it has to be that they were killed to make the film. i have heard that some porn producer offered a large amount of money to anyone who could show him a real snuff film and no one ever claimed the money but that is not really surprising since you would kind of have to confess to being involved in someone's death in some way in order to be in possession of such a thing. i don't know if any one that was relevant to the question but that is what i know about snuff films. they probably don't really exist or at least it has yet to be proven but it's a creepy thought.

A snuff film is essentially a deliberate murder recorded on video. Theres some strong videos floating about from Brazil and from Mexican drug cartels. All sorts of wickedness. Really really heavy shit

And how would you go about proving it? Special effects, splicing etc. can make things look really ..real.
Awhile ago we had a killer in Canada, Lucca Magnotta, who murdered and dismembered a Chinese exchange student. He mailed body parts to different provinces. All this, i know to be fact. There was allegedly a film he made of the murder on the internet floating around but i cant confirm that. Sick fuck.

What an agony should the parents of the exchange student ever happen upon it.

As I recall, the whole snuff film thing began as a hoax, a movie
called Snuff, directed by Roberta Finlay.
Unfortunately, I can't remember what book I read this in.

The closest I think I have ever seen to a snuff film was watching real tribals eat maggots out of the eye sockets of a real rotting human corpse in Hell of the Living Dead (taken from documentary footage that the filmmakers bought and used). I mean it didn't show anybody actually getting killed but it showed real human corpses. Can't think of any other movies I have seen that have done that.
