Ringu, Saw, Martyrs to recent horror sensation It Follows; the list of good modern horror movies is still getting longer & better every year regardless of whatever complaints & criticisms we often get to hear & discuss about the genre today. Yes...there are lack of originality & too much focus on gore & violence than story or characters in many or for the argument sake, in most of the contemporary horror cinema but then again once in a while we also get to see an original & creepy new face of horror like Babadook or a rare case of vampirism in adolescence like Let the Right One In. Through the rise of Asian horror films in late 90s & early 2000s as well as the phenomenal emergence of new wave of Spanish, French & other European horror movies in the last decade or even The Silent House from Uruguay to What We Do in the Shadows from the Kiwis...Horror as a movie genre is actually quite global now. The credit surely goes to those all aspiring & highly talented film makers who are working today and trying their best to carry on the legacy of telling the stories of terror, fright & guts through the celluloid media.
Therefore, here I like to present a tournament of contemporary or modern Horror Movie Directors.

Now, I know this is a debatable issue but just for this particular tourney, I have considered & selected only those horror movie directors who have started making horror movies in last 20 years or so and have made 2 films at least and out of those 2 or more films, at least made 1 in last 10 years.
But yes, there are few exceptions also who doesn’t fit under the criteria that I have just stated!
Believe me, it was a very tedious process to compiling the list of them as there are so many to consider based on how much good or remarkably awful movies they have made. And after adding & removing again & again for these last few months, I have finally completed my required list of 144 modern horror movie directors for this tournament!
Please grant my apologies in advance if you find at the end of the round 1 that some of your favorites may not made the final cut as well as for excluding all those living (or have just passed recently) true masters of horror cinema who have made few or more films in last 20 years. The reason I excluded such legendary horror film makers like Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, Argento, Romero & Craven is because I think in honor of them, it won’t be fair to put them into this tourney considering whatever they made in last 10 or 20 years only, while their real legacy or treasure of remarkable works actually lies beyond that and if I consider all of their grand line of works then I believe any of the today's film makers won't have a chance to proceed any further in the tournament whenever they confront with them. I haven't decided yet but if you want then this tournament may follow another one...Tournament of Best Horror Movie Directors of All time(!) where some of the finalists from this tournament can be qualifies for that.

Anyway, I guess more or less I have some idea about how much the general HDCians are often watch contemporary horror films. So, to keep it tight & competitive, I tried my best to accommodate the film makers (as contestants) of popular or acclaimed horror films as much as possible; so that more of you can participate & vote.
Please try to attend each & every match & vote for your favorite horror movie director(s) or who you think most talented & got the potential to offer us more in future.

FYI: There will be a RED VOTE option which is in case there is a tie or deadlock in a match that lasts more than 48 hours, then I’ll launch the RED VOTE or more preciously to say, my vote to put an end to the deadlock & move forward with the tourney.

Hope it will be another fun & exciting experience for all HDCians.

Thank you all.

The tournament will begin soon...

I was considering Paco Plaza for a second, but I've always credited him with the failure of REC 3 since that was the only REC movie where he was the sole director. It seems like Jaume Balaguero was the real mastermind behind the other REC films because I thought REC 1, 2 and 4 were fantastic.

Yeah, but Second Name and Rosamanta are really under rated works. I think they more than make up for the failure of REC 3, which was a disaster script wise. I blame Plaza more for his input as one of the writers than anything he did directing that mess.

Received a pm from roshiq with the following:

Taking a break. Can't run the tourney with such low participation. Please send my apologies whoever voted so far. Delete/close the thread if you like.

I was thinking that. Five votes has to be considered decent these days. We ultimately got seven on this first one; which hits about all our regular posters for this forum. Would be nice to get more participation from our newer & older forum viewers, but wouldn't be a current expectation.

I really like this idea. Too bad there's not enough activity (pointing at myself). I would have voted for Plaza.
