I hate to nit-pick (but I'm going to), but there's no film titled "Frankenstein versus the Wolfman".

Pretty much following what the other have voted except the last one.
Halloween
Jaws
The Thing
Frankenstein meets the Wolfman
That last one is a killer,i found that incredible hard to vote for but the old Franky/Wolf matchup just nicked it for me but a very hard call.

Oh, the saga of me and the Exorcist. It's not the movies fault. By the time I saw the film, I had seen so many parodies and satirical bits based on the Exorcist that it made the whole film more humor to me than horror. Try as I may through the years, and with a couple attempts to rewatch, the movie never gets beyond the realm of comedy for me. Like I said, it's not the movie so much as the timing. Not to mention, I do like Underworld quite a bit.
My toughest choice on this one was definitely Taste the Blood of Dracula vs Poltergeist. Two movies I love madly.

Damn that sucks. I know the feel though. After I grew up and realized how over sexed the werewolves in Underworld are, they quickly dropped several pegs on my list of favorite lycan films. Exorcist on the other hand was all around perfect, and I hold fond memories of it.

I'd love you to vote whenever you come upon two films competing against each other where you have seen both.
Personally, and as host, unlike super crazy lemonheaded Repod, I wouldnt recommend voting for a film just because there's an actor you like in it. But there might be cases where you know both films, without necessarily having seen every single minute of both, in those cases, use your best judgment. ::cool::

Hammer is not exaggerating. You need to see The Thing. Then you need to let your HDC buddies know what you think of it.
It's on my list, it's on my list! ::big grin::
Round 2 b:
Alien (1979).......................... Vs .. The Howling
The Exorcist (1973)................. Vs .. The Thing From Another World (1951)
Night of the Living Dead (1968).. Vs .. An American Werewolf in London
The Shining............................ Vs .. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Howling (duh)
Exorcist
AWIL (Not even being biased on this one, I really didn't care for NotLD...)
...I really need to see the Shining. I'm sure I'd like it more over DotD...
Voting against The Howling really hurt.

(If we minus MichaelsMyers' extra vote, and I add my vote for Alien, it's technically a tie. The backup tie breaker is the number of original number of selections from our 14 folk submitting their top 5 -- for which Exorcist had 3 times as many selections. I knew ED would have a strong showing, but only one out of 14 people selected it as one of their 5 best horror films, so I think we're OK.)

Very interesting Final Four HDC picked: [Jaws (1975), Alien (1979), The Exorcist (1973), Halloween (1978)]. All from the 1970's...
I'm also surprised how The Exorcist has just thumped the mighty Halloween. Didn't see that coming. Classic battle between Jaws and Alien... pitting two of the most prolific directors in film history.
Feel free to comment.
And so... Alien has exploded out of the belly of Jaws by 1; the power of The Exorcist compels the Boogeyman to fade by 5. They move on.

Yeah, that was a strong final four, and a ringing endorsement for Horror in the 70's.
I was surprised at how easily the exorcist took out Halloween as well. I would have thought it would be way closer.

I agree, I think in many ways the 70's were the golden age of Horror... top budgets, actors, directors and distribution; it was everywhere. Plus serious subjects, depth and originality.
Alien has held up extremely well. The cinematography and sound are sharp even by today's standards. Actually, they're pretty much indistinguishable from a 2015 space film.

Exorcist. Alien is sci-fi not horror.
First of all, Exorcist is a fine choice!
But seriously, why is Alien not horror? Cause the monster killing people isn't on Earth?
Think about it... what sci-fi subject is being espoused and contemplated in Alien? Interstellar cargo ship salvage law? Futuristic corporate behavior? Hmm... how about none... no sci-fi subject. It merely has a futuristic space setting for a monster to menace the characters, and add a sense of isolation & no outside help. Granted, there's some interesting fictional biology; but acid blood is merely a plot device that stops the characters from just shooting the monster.
And you're not actually saying a film can't be horror and sci-fi, right? (Even though, as I just argued, it's far more horror than sci-fi. And IMDB also lists horror & sci-fi) ::smile::

Interesting Stats:
When we collected the Top 5 list from 13 respondents, this was the tally of votes:
Votes / Film
7 Halloween (1978)
5 Jaws (1975)
4 The Thing (1982)
4 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
3 The Exorcist (1973)
3 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
2 Poltergeist (1982)
2 Evil Dead II
2 The Shining
2 Psycho (1960)
2 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
2 The Howling
2 Friday The 13th (1980)
But films going head-to-head put Exorcist on top. Any film Exorcist beat head-to-head could have been the second most regarded, but the last contest was among the closest, beating Alien by 1 vote.
FINAL FOUR:
Jaws (1975)
Alien (1979)
The Exorcist (1973)
Halloween (1978)
Films The Exorcist beat head-to-head Round 1-5:
1 - Underworld
2 - The Thing From Another World (1951)
