Ok maybe not everyone.

I'm kicking around some ideas for my Horroritis stuff, and it got me thinking. What is the most commonly owned horror movie? Or at least the most accessible horror movie.

Any thoughts?

That people own? My guess would be Interview With the Vampire.

Kinda random, Boss. Although I can't say I haven't at least seen that one.

Classics would probably be your best bet. The slashers and monster films that everyone has at least heard of and most likely seen at least one of. But considering we all like different stuff in the horror genre it's hard to say from my end.

They really don't have to own it. I guess I'm just looking the one that would be most accessible to most people.

I think a very commonly owned (kinda horror I guess) movie would be the first Ghostbusters.

I'm not saying its the best, just the one most likely to be owned by the most people.

A film that is strictly horror that is accessible...depends on the generation. Like 15 yearolds now would most likely laugh at The Gate, but 20 years ago it would be very accessible. I think it varies too much from person to person.

Do you have a specific audience in mind?

Night Of The Living Dead does seem right.

I didn't even think about Ghostbusters, but it does make sense. Especially with the reboot coming up.

I would go with original Halloween, Ghostbusters, or the recently popular Walking Dead series. Although that's a TV series.

What's the highest grossing horror movie? I remember the Friday the 13th remake did well at first. Whatever it is could be the answer.

Ghost Busters is one of the highest grossing films ever. So I assume that's it.

good question. in any/all formats...

I think a very commonly owned (kinda horror I guess) movie would be the first Ghostbusters.

excellent guess. got to be one of top.

Doubt it; because they lost their copyright... No big distriutor can have exclusive rights; scares them off.

No wait, fuck I got it. Evil Dead II.
Highly doubt it. My mom, dad, brother & sisters doesn't know that movie. barking up the wrong tree.

There you go! Halloween. They know that film.

Depending how we define horror.

Think a combo of everyone-type fame... plus time...

Jaws
Frankenstein
Halloween
King Kong (all three)
Ghostbusters
Poltergeist
The Shining
The wolfman
Alien
Creature from black lagoon
Dracula
Friday the 13th
Nightmare on elm st...
Silence of the lambs
Interview with a vampire

I'm kinda surprised so many people here consider Ghostbusters horror. I never thought of it as a horror movie, even though there were ghosts in it.

I say the first one could be, but not the second. The Scoleri brothers ruined that for me.

My random guess would be the original Halloween or the Exorcist. Though I know some in the newer crowd are not as keen on older films.

I never would have thought of that one. I did not think it was that famous or popular, but I do own it.

Funnily enough, I have a collection of over 900 horror films (and, yes, I consider both Ghostbusters films horror) and I did not acquire the original Ghostbusters until literally this past weekend. In any format. Stranger than this is the fact that I actually love the movie, so it was always a glaring omission.

Night of the Living Dead 1968. ::cool::

This would be a good guess as well since it is so easy to get. I once got a copy through a book I bought...lol. I probably have it maybe like three or four times and I actually never bought it intentionally. Not that it is bad or anything, it's actually a favorite. It just so happens that I never bought it intentionally.

Could be Exorcist. It fits the model (everyone knows it [not just Horror fans] plus time), but I haven't seen many people with the film (video/DVD) for some reason. I don't know if it's a film a lot of people wanted to buy and rewatch...

Same here. I have a copy of it within a DVD boxset of 20 other films. But how many people bought it by itself? I doubt anywhere near the numbers of some of the other films I listed (like Jaws).

LOL! Ya, HDC had a debate on whether this is Horror or not back when we did the Best Horror Films of all-time, decade by decade...

It's like Young Frankenstein... It's primarily a comedy, but it's Horror themed. So, take your pick. Ghostbusters and Young Frankenstein are one of those multi-themed films Comedy and Horror. So I lump it in.

I just said the Exorcist because I know many talk about seeing and loving it. While I know it is an unpopular opinion, but I think that the Exorcist, as a film not considering its cultural effects, is not a particularly strong movie. It was unique for its time and was not bad, but there are plenty of other more compelling films from the same period. Even the Amityville Horror was a better film, in my opinion. Granted, that is a little off topic.

Jaws is a really good guess. Friday the 13th is another very plausible choice. I do not think a whole lot of people have the Universal classics. I love them, but I am not sure how many of the general public, even the horror crowd, actually own them.

In my opinion the movie that most people own is either jaws or Halloween and possibly Psycho

I could definitely see Jaws or Halloween. I love Psycho, it is my favorite horror movie of all time, but, honestly, I do not think that too many people own it.

Psycho's one of my favorites but I admit my copy is a burned one. I'm waiting for a collection with the sequels to buy it on DVD. All the ones I find are either just the first movie or just the sequels, never are they put together. ::roll eyes::

I want the first two Jaws and that's it, looking for those in a pack, but same situation as Psycho.

I have the first Halloween on VHS, I'll be collecting the sequels as I see them on tape at Goodwill, but again I'm looking for a collection on DVD, but it's not a cheap buy that one.

This topic should really ask horror movies everyone has SEEN rather than owns. Under certain circumstances (finances or availability), not everyone has what they may like and want to own on DVD or whatever.

-Evil Dead 1, 2 and Army Of Darkness
-The Exorcist
-The Omen 1 and 2
-Friday The 13th
-From Dusk Till Dawn
-Interview With The Vampire
-The Toxic Avenger
