I thought it might be interesting to talk about horror films based on true stories, but not just that. I'm wondering what stories you found closest to the real thing and/or you believe to be very real. Regardless if the film is good or not.
There's a lot out there, but I can't think of one at the moment. I'd like to hear what you guys think. I mean there's The Mothman Prophecies, Blair Witch, The Conjuring, etc., but none of them brought me close to believing.

I know I can think of a few others but the first one that came to mind was "Fairytale: A True Story". This film was based on the Cottingley fairies photographed by two little girls in 1917. I so wanted to believe in them. I think I read somewhere that recently a professor in England photographed something that appeared quite "fairy-like". I'll try and find it again.

I remember the film. It was good, but I believe the pictures were conclusively proven to be fakes?

Yes the 2 little girls (cousins, I think) later admitted years after that they were fakes, but one of them maintained that photograph #5 was not faked.

The Entity is one that brings me close to believing something besides psychosis occurred. From my reading it seems the family never tried to capitalize on it, it wasn't faked, etc. Or that one of the children still claims its real. Worth reading about if you're interested.

I actually thought The Last Broadcast was real because I hadn't heard anything about it before I watched it.

Well there was Amityville but while I know murders took place in the house, I think the Lutz family were just trying to get out of a mortgage.

Wow, Boofer. Did not expect that cynicism from you. Amityville happened.

I don't believe in the supernatural.
Let me expand on my previous comment: I don't think the Jersey Devil is real; I meant that I thought the missing persons case was real.

The Bell Witch, the basis for that film's mythology, is a somewhat documented case. But not a lot of corroboration, particularly outside of the community. Some good horror books based on it though.

It happened, but not supernatural. Just some regular family homicides.

Ronnie Dafeo still says that he heard voices and things, but he was pretty forth coming about just killing everyone. I saw a decent interview recently with him. Pretty crazy SOB.
I would Cropsy is a good one. He got a couple films I think. It was a huge urban legend until people figured out it was legit and caught him.

I did some research regarding Amityville, it's kind of inconclusive of what really happened. It's even more odd that nothing has happened since then at that house. The people who live there now say that nothing has ever happened since they moved in. My guess; someone had deep psychological problems and went on a family killing spree one day. We have all heard similar stories before........

I'm very surprised nobody has mentioned "The Girl Next Door." It's about this girl and her siblings that get left in the care of a neighbor who ends up torturing the girl. I'm also trying to be very vague as to not spoil anything because it seems like none of you have seen it.

I haven't seen it, but a favorite band of mine did a song about it.

This post was meant to find stories about supernatural stuff, not specifically humans acting like monsters. Not that I think you shouldn't post about it, just probably why is was not mentioned. : )

Yes, I seen it. It was horrible what happened to the girl.

I've seen it but it's only loosely based on the Sylvia Likens story. There's another film based on the same story called "An American Crime" which is less graphic but stays true to the story, so it's more disturbing in my opinion, because when you're watching it you know it actually happened, which is just awful.
The Conjuring freaked me out because unlike films like Insidious, it didn't have any fake looking demons or a creature with horns/hooves, so it came across quite realistic to me. Most people have heard things/thuds at night or thought that they felt someone touch their leg, etc. so it's kinda creepy ::wink::

This thread just made me look up films that are based on true stories and I'm shocked to see that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of them, I had no idea ::EEK!::

That was just stupid advertising. It was just based on a bunch of different serial killers.

Oh right ::embarrassment:: After doing some digging, I found out that it's just loosely based off of a serial killer that was found with masks made out of human skin. (or something like that)
