Did anyone else play P.T. - the short game that turned out to be an elaborate playable teaser for the next upcoming game in the Silent Hill franchise?

I was stuck with the controller because my friend got so uncomfortable and sweaty-palmed after two minutes that he couldn't hold on to it and I don't think I've ever been that scared from any movie or game. It was ridiculous.

At one point I just let go of the (vibrating) controller, covered my eyes and ears for a full minute while my friend pussied out completely by leaving the room. He then insisted we quit before completing it and that we never play it again at his place, and since he's the one with the PS, I've never gotten the chance to try it again, even though I'm dying to re-experience such a delicious fright!

Did anyone else get a rare, and rather nauseating thrill from playing this teaser?

I played it, its pretty freaking awesome. But would you expect anything less from Guillermo Del Toro? That is probably the only game I am legitimately excited about this year.

As would I be, if knew I could get my chickensh*t PS-owner pal to leave his own house while I indulge in Del Toro/ Kojima awesomeness.

But the style is going to be completely different right? Third person and more violence that creepiness is the sense I get?

Im not sure if it will be entirely first person, but the creepiness will be through the roof. Its one of Del Toros signatures. I am a die hard fan of the first three. And Downfall wasn't bad either. But the scare level had weekend as the series went on. I think this one will be legitimately scary. I haven't been really scared by a game in ages. But I remember playing the second one in my basement, pitch black and no one in the house. I thought I was going to die.

That qualifies as either one of the most ballsy or most masochistic things I've ever heard.

I'm hoping the game will contain some of the teaser's atmosphere, but I read in some interview with Kojima that the point of P.T. was to capture the true essence of horror. And I'd call it a job well done.

It was a good spin on the franchise for me, because I panic and DIE when attacked by something in Silent Hill, Project Zero, Amnesia...

I'd much rather just wake up on the basement floor ready for another bout of nervous torture after a ghost Lisa assault.

I have hunted for really serious horror in the gaming world for a long time. Nothing turns me on more than playing a really scary game and hearing a noise in the house. I love what happens in my imagination when I am really scared.

I absolutely feel you on that, I think this is what draws me to the horror genre in general. I love that rush of adrenalin when I'm alone and so scared I actually let out an involuntary scream or a nervous giggle. Or cover my eyes and ears.

And games are way worse than movies because of the interaction factor, the problem is I WILL die if it's something where I have to actively defend myself.
So I have to settle for more creepy exploration games (like Scratches) or indies (like The Last Door)

Lol! Im a pretty solid gamer. I loved the games back in the hay day of the horror genre. Siren was great, and Fatal Frame. I just cant remember a recent game that actually got me going. I had high hopes for The Evil Within and Dying Light but they still didn't get me.

Yeah, it's hard not to get desensitized when gorging on extreme assaults on the senses and the imagination at any given chance.

I miss the days when I got spooked when a primitively pixelated witch entered a forest frame in Kings Quest 1 to the lound sound of an ominous midi tune.

Or when a lady suddenly took off her clothes in Leisure Suit Larry ::shocked::

Here's to hoping Del Toro/ Kojima will redeem the genre in creative and effective ways!

I haven't played Dying Light yet, but my impression was that its more of a survival open world model instead of scaring the player.

Its a lot like Dead Island was. It still classifies itself as horror though. A lot like the BS that was the last few Resident Evil games. All of the good psychological horror has been lost and that's what we really need back in the gaming world. I still remember when the zombie dog jumped through the window in the first Resident Evil and I almost pooped myself. And Friday the 13th on NES, holy crap, that was legit scary. Lol.

I agree, I didn't even realize you had to use a mike. If that is indeed a requirement, people in forums post the most ridiculous ideas about how to get the phone to ring, such as playing a particular Beatles song into the mike.

Kudos to those who did beat it - mighty pair of balls on any who stayed in that game for hours on end figuring out the cues.

You don't need a mike to beat the game.

So does using a mike just trigger some things or is it all bull?

I mean I figured the Beatles thing wasn't true, obviously...

Never heard about the mike thing. Beatles, wtf???

Some idiot swore Lisa would manifest if he played a certain Beatles tune into his mike .

Others said saying her name made her appear, but if you beat it without a mike its probably not even a factor but a somewhat randomized engine, since she seems to appear, well, randomly?

Too bad, I actually thought it'd be pretty awesome if you could only beat a game by actually talking to the ghost.

I haven't played it. But when the tease was revealed people were saying that it was completely random. I don't know if they updated anything.

Anchen
03-20-2015, 01:07 PM
I think the consensus is, you have to go through certain steps - but it sounds like other than those, it's randomized, which obviously increased the scare factor replay value, as you never know when or if something might happen.

Well done team Toro/Kojima. Certainly got a few ear-pitching screams out of me.

I'm really excited for the new game, definetly restored my faith in the series. PT had that creepiness and tension factor the original games had. The monsters in downfall left me really disappointed :-/
High hopes for this one!

With this sort of thing you never know who was in charge of the overall feel of the game. At least I didn't read much about it.

Also, people weren't crazy about the new Castlevania direction which Kojima Productions also helped. We won't know the final result until the new Silent Hill comes out.

True but kojima created silent Hill. He's the reason we love it in the first place. And the ones that sucked, he wasn't involved with. So... Odds are. Lol.

I don't believe Hideo Kojima was involved with any Silent Hill games. At least the first three. Those are the ones that people like the most I think. After those it's all downhill from what I've heard.

You are absolutely correct sir! Gosh, my cheeks are red. Lol. He created all of the Metal Gear games, but had nothing to do with Silent Hill. Lol. He did though handle almost everything involved in P.T. which was the closest to a real horror game anyone has come in ages. Losing his connection will definitely affect the game. That said I literally cant remember playing a decent horror game in the last 15 years give or take. And P.T. was awesome. Im in high hopes that he will at least make a horror game in the near future using the techniques he used in P.T.

Well, on the bright side, maybe Kojima got headhunted for some other studio or has gone rogue to pursue his own, hopefully awesome projects. I mean, he HAS been doing a LOT of Metal Gear at this point. Maybe it's time for something new.

Here's to hoping RubyRose is right about the chances of Silent Hills still getting made, with del Toro at the steering will. Or maybe it's time for a change there as well, and a rebranding campaign will give us something new. And awesome!

Resident Evil 4 is a very good action horror game. And I would call it one of the best games ever.

Also they just released the Resident Evil HD Remaster. I got the Japanese Collector's Edition. That's one of the best horror games.

A friend of mine was telling me why Castlevania isn't good anymore a while ago. How they kept saying those portable versions were the best versions and putting what should be a high end property on a small portable system multiple times. Then releasing two pretty bad versions on PS2. After that giving the game to an outside company to create a God of War ripoff that was barely Castlevania in spirit.

It seems like Konamis big problem is milking their series until it's just a shell of what it used to be
When they start looking to produce quality content rather than just caring about putting out anything to make money, we'll see better games. Hopefully they start this with silent hills, fingers crossed!!

Resident Evil 4 is just an action game with Zombie, take out the zombies and put in insurgents and you have a third person modern warfare. The horror Im hunting for takes very few enemies and a ton of tension. The original Resident Evil, when the dog jumped through the window in the first long hallway, that was scary as shit. It was easily beaten but scary. I have played through the original a few times and intend on playing through the HD remaster. The HD remaster of Silent Hill was pretty solid. But real horror games, no, there haven't been any in a long time.

Symphony of the night was one of my favorite games of all time. Castlevania should always be side scrolling, they shouldn't try to make it 3D.

Maybe. But a lot of companies in the videogame industry do the same thing. It's easy money when you can get someone to buy the same game every year or buy a previously released game with touched up graphics. With Castlevania they did it for so long on the smaller systems with probably small sales numbers. The people that pushed the series forward starting with the NES and other major versions probably left. Leaving us with the guy that made / assisted with Symphony of the Night. He just continued to make the same game over and over on portable systems. Then made those two bad ones on PS2. I think something similar happened to Silent Hill. After part 3 is where people say it went downhill.

I kind of disagree with that. The first section of Resident Evil 4 is very slow and spooky. It's by far the best part of the game. The castle is spooky too. But it starts the more action change there. It's when you get to the island with the zombie mercenaries that things really change. But there is that lab and a few other scary places. It's not like a full on warfare game. No where near like what Resident Evil 5 is. And I haven't played Resident Evil 6 yet.

That part with the dog in the original did scary me when I first played it. Same with the zombie around that corner that I assumed was dead before it grabbed me.

I heard many people say the HD remake of Silent Hill has all kinds of problems. I think there was talk about it here too. Check here.

http://silenthill.wikia.com/wiki/Silent_Hill_HD_Collection

A lot of people think that Symphony of the Night is the best Castlevania. I don't. It's good. But that hype let the director or planner of that game make I believe 6 titles on portable systems, which are all basically the same game. And two really bad ones on PS2. Then when people played God of War they thought that is what Castlevania should be. I think Hideo Kojima was one of those people. I thought the original Devil May Cry had a better Castlevania feel than God of War.

If Castlevania is to survive, which it looks like it might not, it needs to be 3D. That's what the larger audience will buy. And it needs to be the top of the action category like it used to be. They need to start over and remake it from scratch again.

That's what really sucks. The removal of digital only games. They say if you purchased / download them you always have them. But I don't trust that. I'm going to set aside time to play this demo trailer. I still don't like the random idea of getting the true ending.

I wish I could say that the whole thing with Hideo Kojima is surprising. I believe he was even a vice president or some almost meaningless title with the company. But the Videogame Industry has a bad reputation of promoting suits ahead of creative people. There are a bunch of other creative people in Japan that mentioned it before.

If anything maybe we will get a new horror series from Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro if they really want to make one.
