View Full Version : Hunting a Wendigo?

Sup HDC? So in my neighborhood there is rumor of a Wendigo roaming our woods. There have been weird things happening here the past few months, pets and other animals disappearing. People have claimed to see a large creature bounding through our forest and loud halooing. I'm wanting to put a stop to it.
What is the best way to slay a creature like a Wendigo? Do ordinary weapons work against it, or do I need more specialized tricks? I can't find anything on the net about the hunt I'm going on.
I plan on entering the woods taking food, portable stove, a tent, sleeping bag, covers, a hatchet, first aid kit, a 12 gauge with lots of ammo, and a few flares.
What do you think of my chances??

Thanks for the reminder. I do need to check the silver content on my casings. Main concern is incapacitating the creature, no easy task (ETA: I am taking a crash course in Krav Maga next week). Which is why I'm asking for charms, spells, amulets, etc. that might temporarily stun the Wendigo upon engagement. What say you on immobilizing target through fire (keeping in mind its habitat).

Wendigo. A very monstrous spirit that lives in the woods. Undead nature may want to use fire or some spiritual protection. Native Americans had to deal with these all the time. I will try to provide as much info as I can. I do not recommend hunting it. They leave no survivors.

Know this, Warlock: I am prepared to destroy or expel this monster and rid our village of its menace. I think weaponizing fire is a bit of a logistical nightmare, esp. in a forest.

Okay, But you know this the undead and the spirits resist much. Come back safely. Be very vigilant, do not go to sleep, keep a fire going, and circle your camp with salt which should work to repel the monster if something goes wrong. Heed my words.

Say all goes well: how might I go about disposing of the beast's carcass?

Burn it until there is nothing but ash or it shall rise again. Take the ashes and throw them into running water such as a river.
Try also using a sword to remove its head that might kill it.

If I may add something from years of serious Wendigo study. They are typically hard to find because they move with the wind, they can be invisible to the naked eye and put off no heat signature. They can also take the form of friends and family from images in your memory. Very tricky creatures, you have to be careful and trust nothing.

Yes very tricky for they are spirits, they leave no survivors let us all wish him luck.

So the story is eating others allows the Wendigo to possess you? I've heard different opinions, but wonder if its spirit could jump into a non-cannibal's body out of desperation.

Met with our local shaman. Some highlights from my notes:
*Wendigo is thought to be something only Native Americans spoke about but others have seen them in recent decades all over N. America. AKA skinwalkers, goatman. Legend is that a long time ago a man had no choice but to eat human flesh to stay alive and became the first wandering Wendigo. Other legends say the Wendigos haunt forests protecting them and its wildlife from outsiders with bad intentions.
*Bloofer is right that you have to dismember the beast so it doesn't resurrect itself. But it's way, way more complicated than I first thought: each limb of the body must be salted and torched completely, then scattered; or each part must be secured in some REALLY remote place (like the bottom of a lake, sea, well, etc.).
*Silver bullets or weapon (knife) are key. Conventional weapons are useless against the Wendigo. This guy, who has met a Wendigo, fired 20 round drum of 12 buckshot and 10 rounds of .338 Mag from 20 yards and it was still coming.
*Heavy duty Boise headphones are needed to block out its shrieks. Hadn't thought of that one.
*Only moment my hair stood up a bit: "You don't hunt the Wendigo. It hunts you."

First let me apologize if my writing isn’t the greatest. Whether this story is extraterrestrial, paranormal, or simply weird I’ll leave it to you to decide. I’m not completely sure myself.
As you know, neighbors and I have suspected a Wendigo/skinwalker/goatman has been roaming our little NC hamlet for some time. Stories and rumors about it go way back. The specific details are it appears at night, when a great and eerie halooing noise has been heard from the nearby woodland. Several pets and other animals are routinely found dead and strewn in neighbors’ yards, but these ocurrances had dramatically increased in the past month. Cops and animal control have been no help. After educating myself on the Wendigo’s ways and how to destroy the beast, I set out on Friday, February 13th to rid the town of the monster and our fear by securing, and then destroying, said Wendigo.
::devil::
I set out about 6:00pm EST armed with enough supplies to survive a week, excited as hell (somewhat foolishly, I left my cellphone behind b/c I thought I could navigate pretty well with map and compass based on my Scout days). I decamped in an area in the woods I honestly didn’t know very well, but looked like a good case to stay---flat, lots of limbs and boughs for firewood, and a small rivulet for water.
After setting up my tent, I threw on my backpack and drank some vodka since I knew dusk was quickly descending and the woods can be spooky at night, esp. if you aren’t used to camping. Thus fortified I decided to explore my immediate surroundings and headed down a dirt trail, scoping out some wildlife (rabbits, birds, owls) that looked pretty surprised to see me in their valley.
After about 15 minutes of this I noticed a pungent smell, like rotting flesh. After “following my nose” a bit I came upon what appeared to be two (and “a half”) freshly-killed coyotes. A few things about this were confusing to me and, honestly, a bit spooky. One, their carcasses showed no signs of bullet wounds (not that many hunters come out here anyway). Two, the fact that there were three that were mauled ruled out death by natural cause. So they were definitely killed, intentionally, by some other animal. Finally, I didn’t think some large beast like a bear would kill all these coyotes and just leave them---it was almost like the animals were being stockpiled. (If anyone knows of *large* animals that do this practice I’d be genuinely interested in hearing from you.)
::danger::
My "spidey-sense" now tingling, I decided to book it back to camp for the night. For a fleeting, crazy moment I had a mad thought that the Wendigo might have screwed up my sense of direction and I’d be alone with just my backpack, but I calmed down found the flat with my tent. I decide to build a fire to heat some water for warmth and so I could cook up some 5-star Ramen. By the time "dinner" was done it was too dark for more exploring. After awhile I put out the fire and get in my tent with my lantern, crawl in my sleeping bag with plenty of blankets---it was about 30° and dropping---and flip on a HAM radio that I brought along for shits and giggles (and to "tune" out the nighttime forest noise). That’s when things started getting creepy….

The coyote thing would have freaked me out, especially if they appeared freshly killed. Maybe you disturbed what ever it was that was possibly in the middle of eating one. Creepy. Were they attacking something and it fought back? Were they all killed at the same time, or separate times and dragged there.

First night (2/13) Wendigo-hunt continued.
So, to pick up where I left off. I’m laying in my sleeping bag in a slightly buzzed state at about 9pm, scanning the HAM radio to see what I can pick up. Nothing really interesting going on except a few cops reporting their status from what sounded like far away. Eventually I doze off and wake up a bit later because I hear a crinkling noise in my tent. This startled me awake because I thought some animal/critter had snuck into my tent.
But it wasn’t an animal, it was my HAM radio. I turned up the volume and listened into whatever was going on. I heard what can only be described as a fingernails scratching a chalk board and a guttural and (to my ears) pained screeching. Then there was a pop, followed by silence. My old radio had gone out or blown a fuse. Whatever happened, it wouldn't turn back on. The fact that this happened after hearing the noise didn’t bother me. I now had no means of communication, and began to wonder if coming out to hunt the Wendigo alone wasn’t a the best idea. I forced this out of my mind and eventually fell into a restless sleep, with the mind that I’d begin tracking the Wendigo in earnest the next morning.
::devil:: Day 2 ::devil::
Woke up at daylight, crawled out of the tent and felt like sh*t. Very groggy/hung over and muscles sore b/c not used to laying on the ground. Re-started the fire and boiled some water to make instant coffee. I decided today I would be exploring and canvassing the woods in earnest. After breakfast (MRE eggs/bacon) I strap on my equipment and hiked around several natural trails and valleys, looking for signs of life or habitation by large beasts.
About mid-afternoon, I had just crossed a ridge a couple of miles from my campsite when I found it. On the side of a mountain face, something that looks like an abandoned silver mine or natural cave catches my eye (and we don’t have silver mines in NC). I attach a picture of what it resembled. Curious, I walked up to it with my rifle and peeked inside. It was a *huge* cave--- big enough to go inside, and so I did. I know this probably seems a bad idea to us as horror fans but after all, I was out here to investigate. I looked in and as my eyes adjusted to the dark noticed a turn in the very back of the cave.
That was when it hit me: that primal feeling of dread you get when you find yourself in the wrong neighborhood or someplace you shouldn’t be. I felt all of a sudden like I was being observed and immediately froze. What set off my alarm bells? It’s not that I heard or saw anything to provoke this sensation, as it was very quiet and dark. It was something else entirely that was amiss.
It was the smell. The same pungent odor the dead coyotes from yesterday were letting off. And now it seemed too strong, rotten, and offensive for animal carcass.

Alright, tired of typing…more tomorrow hopefully, I anticipate about 3-4 more “entries”…

Oh, I know you're not throwing shade. But I agree that this may not just leave normal clues. A Bigfoot would leave some kind of trail or droppings but I don't think a wendigo would.

Now in theory, I should have been glad to be standing in the cave with the chance to take down whatever lied within. But I am ashamed to admit that every ounce of my body told me to GTFO of there. Besides, I didn’t want to fight whatever beast lived there on its home turf. I slowly inched back, shouldering my rifle and pointing it to the cave. Each step felt like it was 1000X louder than normal. As I got back into the daylight I bolted back the way I came. It was late afternoon and snow had begun falling. I felt weak and had to use my compass to get back to camp. It took awhile. I decided it was probably best to pack up and go home, perhaps come back when conditions improved. At this point felt tired, ill-prepared, and in over my head.
As I came up on my camp, and noticed something seemed off. The place didn’t look like it did when I left it. I felt extremely uneasy now. When I got closer, this feeling got worse. I realized my campsite had been gone through. Tent had been slashed, food scattered every which way, and my spare bags dumped out. The charred wood from my fire was strewn everywhere. I assessed the damage and then realized something: nothing was actually missing. This was a case of clear-cut vandalism, like someone (something?) was sending me a message....or a warning.
::danger::
Something else I noticed. It was quiet, even for a snowfall. No birds, no noise, nothing. Total and complete silence. I should have known then that this land belonged to someone else, and that the tables had been turned on my little “hunting trip.”
Quickly losing daylight, I decided to patch up my tent, rebuild the fire, and crawl into my sleeping bag with some extra foil and coverlets. I drained the remainder of my flask to keep me warm and settle myself down. I intended to leave at first light. Nothing could change my mind about that now.
But it was a mistake NOT to leave that night, in fact that very instant, even in bad conditions and in the dark. It was a huge error to try to stick it out one more night. The weather was the least of my problems. I will describe my encounter tomorrow….

Day 2 continued/Day 3
Well I've been putting off writing this part all day. It's just a wrenching and unpleasant experience to recount, even in (relative) safety.
About 7:30 pm, before turning in for the night--- last night of this stupid, ill-conceived trip, I told myself---I decided to do a quick survey of the campsite. Not sure what motivated me to do so. Like I said, snow was falling now and I had no reason to pace the perimeter of my resting place instead of settling down for the night, especially given the events of the past 48 hours. But pace I did.
As I scanned the area that led in the (rough) direction of the cave, I saw something move in the darkness. It was barely visible as it was reflected by my firelight and just behind a rocky escarpment. It was hidden by some rocks, whatever it was. It disappeared and I continued staring in its direction for a solid 10-15 minutes, figuring I might see it in the distance again if I waited.
Then, it stood up.
From now until the day I die, I will never forget the total terror I felt while looking at this creature. It was like evil and death itself had been incarnated, and every fiber of my body was screaming to me that it could not be real. A large, bipedal brute stood just beyond the lighted threshold of my fire. It just stood, looking at me. How to describe it? The stench was overwhelming. A massive, stag-like head. Well over 7". But the scariest part was the eyes: big, vacant, dark. No gleam or reflection to them. Lifeless.
[To give you a sense of this creature, I’ve attached two images. Take the body/mass of the grizzly and (the best I could find) the head of the buck. Yeah.)
Luckily my survival instincts kicked in. I was carrying my rifle with me as I canvassed the site. I took off the safety, and delivered an 8mm to its head from basically 5 yds. distance. A deafening shriek followed, absolutely terrible to listen to. It went straight to your bones. The beast shook for a moment, but didn’t fall, so I delivered another round at the chest, and it screeched again and began running---much, much faster than you’d think it’s size could carry it.
I bolted too, and the next few hours are a blur. I ran down into a wash, looking ridiculous because I tried to keep my gun trained behind me the best I could as I ran (in the dark, in the snow…not fun...Wendigo Dundee I am not!). I found a small crevice in an embankment that hid me, where I spent the next several hours. I heard grunts and screeches in the distance: they sounded close, but could have been further away. Who knows. I sure as hell wasn’t going to check. I spent the whole night hiding in the corner of a small hillock, my gun pointed at the dark, adrenaline pumping through my veins. The most terrifying and exhausting night of my life.
Dawn eventually broke, and the my last discovery should just about wrap this one up…

Sorry for the delay guys. I've been waiting on a final piece of information for the story, and now I have it. Here's the end of my story---for now.
Day 3 (continued)
So dawn eventually broke, as it always does, and I stopped hearing things. It had been a good few hours since I heard the first shot, but waited till full daylight before moving from my hiding place. As the sun came up and the (welcome) sounds of nature emerged, even in the snow, I ventured out of my spot.
No sign of whatever the hell was hunting me.
I grabbed some of my supplies that I had dropped in crossing the woods---no way was I going back to my campsite---and slung my rifle on my shoulder. I started to very carefully start heading out based on my compass. I hadn’t really strayed that far from the campsite after all.
And yet, and yet. I couldn’t help it. I wondered what may have been left behind where I had actually shot the damn thing---twice---and this feeling was driven home all the more by the fact that I had nothing really to show for my hunt. Nada. In fact, I’d lost most of my (pricey) camping equipment. Daylight gave me more courage and I went by what was left of my camp around 8am.
Still no sign of anything there, so I went a few yards to where I first saw the beast perched the previous night. I mounted the rocky area where it had been watching me and that’s when I found it: a nice bit of blood splatter. I grabbed a handful of the earth it had dried into and booked it out of there. I never looked back.
::devil:: ::devil::
Epilogue
So I did an inventory when I got back to my house, and had indeed lost a few hundred dollars in gear, keeping only my rifle and some ammo magazines and knapsack. After decompressing a bit, I wanted to get to the bottom of whatever it was I had encountered in the woods. I contacted a friend of mine who works in forensics at our local university, and told her---in very vague details---that I’d been in a hunting accident and maybe had shot something I wasn’t sure of. She had me bring her the blood-stained earth/rocks and ran some DNA tests on them.
She got back to me yesterday (Friday) with the results.
Her verdict: “I don’t know what the hell this DNA is.”
So concludes my story, for time time being. The incidents in my neighborhood have stopped for now, too, but I suspect the Wendigo is simply lying low these nights, licking its wounds, as it were. Watching and waiting. I can't look at the woods adjoining my house without feeling the same sense of dread I felt standing in its cave. And the smell...
If---when---it returns, so will I. We have unfinished business.

Next time you have to use magic incantations to banish this abomination. You did not destroy it completely.
I have a thought, when you said it would be hazardous to use fire in the woods you could of waited for it to rain thus making everything wet. This would have helped not to catch the woods on fire. Bloofer said they have hearts of ice. You can melt ice with fire. Jake ashworth said they are invisible but the wet ground would have made it easier to track it.

Hey bros, no new hunt in the offing (yet) but some other weird things have been happening in these parts. On my daily constitutionals around my neighborhood, I have spied many of the houses next to mine have weird markings/etchings on them (on porches, garages, etc.). I can't make heads or tails of the language or symbols but in light of the recent events detailed in this thread they have left me a little unsettled.
What do you think? Has a cult of the Wendigo formed here that worships the entity? Or are these encryptions intended to ward it off? Is it just some local kids/meth-heads having fun? I should mention I rarely see the people that live in these homes around...and when I do, they don't seem so nice
Sample of two (there are about seven houses with these hieroglyphics in all). One is in a garage facing the street that's been open for about a month now; the other is scrawled above the patio next door.
