Helllooooo Ghouls and Boys!
While I'm not quite finished with Frankenstein Week, I thought that it would be a good time to post the upcoming schedule for
Horror Marathon Week 2: Werewolves (There Wolves!)
This should be an interesting week. On a cursory Google search of werewolf movies, it appears as though I haven't seen very many, and the ones that I haven't seen I either have the perception that they're not worth seeing OR they are generally ill-received.
I'm excited for my own personal lineup and I can't wait to hear about the other movies that folks may watch.
Viewing Schedule
Sunday, September 21st, 5:00 p.m. EST: The Wolf Man (1941)
Tuesday, September 23rd, 8:00 p.m. EST: An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Thursday, September 25th, 8:00 p.m. EST: Ginger Snaps (2000)
I shifted around my viewing plans a bit for this one - Watching The Wolf Man was an obvious choice (for me, thinking about the Universal Frankenstein immediately brings me to The Wolf Man) - What will be interesting, too, is that, along with Frankenstein, I haven't seen it in at least 20 years, so it'll be like watching it for the first time.
As for An American Werewolf in London, well, I had seen pieces of it a while ago and wrote it off. However, I understand that it is actually quite the iconic film so, like it or not, I should probably have it under my belt. I consider this a first viewing for me (and part of what I want to do with this marathon is make myself watch movies I've never seen).
Finally, there's Ginger Snaps. I put it on my list, then removed it, swapped in Dog Soldiers, and then swapped them again. I wanted to put in a modern werewolf movie and I was having a hard time choosing between the two (I like them both very much and I originally swapped out Ginger Snaps only because I've seen it so many times). I think I am going to stick with Ginger Snaps for the shared viewing on Thursday (hopefully this will push folks to watch it who haven't seen it before!) and I'll strive to stick Dog Soldiers in there as well - It's been a while since I've seen Doctor # Nine anyway. ::wink::
I moved the Sunday night viewing an hour earlier so hopefully that'll be easier for folks in the UK.
I will be using the website meetings.io to organize a private chat room (that also supports video chat). I will share out the link prior to each screening...
CAN'T MAKE IT?
No worries! Join in the conversation here!
WANT TO WATCH SOMETHING ELSE?
Watch/post about other Werewolf-themed movies through the week - Let's expand the discussion!
Other movies I am considering: Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2004), Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004), Silver Bullet (1985)

I just want to reccomend the film The Howling if you have never seen it. It is one of my favorite werewolf movies, it's very captivating and I love all the werewolf movie references. The ending is also quite...unique. I might have to watch it again next week.

Hrm. Ok. Full disclosure. I tried watching it a couple of years ago and was not a huge fan. I'm not even sure if I made it to the end. That movie has a LOT of love around here but it just didn't work for me. I don't think it aged very well.

I am very sorry you did not enjoy it. In my opinion, it has aged quite well. Honestly, I enjoyed it even more than the immensly popular (yet still good) An American Werewolf in London. After the Wolf Man (1941), I would actually say it was my favorite werewolf movie.

I'm up for seeing Hard Candy (for the first time). I should be able to make it.
It's been a look time since I saw Dr Pepper making it. I might be up for that.
I just saw Lon a month ago.
A Company of Wolves and The Howling are at the those opposite ends, so to speak. Both excellent and with flaws. Company is a fairy tale, and Howling is at it's best when it does the hardcore reality horror; highlighted by the opening scene, (handheld camera feel) the daring reporter's secret meeting with the deranged offender), and the scenes in the 'temporary' morgue. To me, it falters when it tries to incorporate fairy tale feel and scenes, into the ultra reality. Once they get to the 'camp', they milk the material a little too long, or keep it too shallow. It's a good horror film if you're feeling jumpy and on edge from realworld dangers.
Company is basically all fairytale, very nice cinematography. Nitpicking... only complaint is the story content is enough for about 60 mins. If they were determined to go 90 mins, they needed to add story content &/or depth.

OK. Apologies for the delay. The husband had TV control and needed to finish up his current episode of Naked and Afraid (true story). ::big grin::
OK Creeps - Here it is... The Wolf Man (1941) -
I haven't seen this in 20+ years or so, probably with my father and my vivid most memory of the film is that I found it truly sad...

ALSO - For you Xfinity owners - Guess what?? Wolf Man '41 is now FREE ON DEMAND!
I'll wait a couple of minutes before beginning.

FYI - I'm going to hop out of meetings.io for now. HF, Mett, and I are chatting via FB chat. PM me if you want to join!
Hopefully for the rest of the marathon, I'll find something that will:
Allow video chat for those who like to video chat
Allow audio chat for those who want to audio chat
And allow text chat for those who don't have a webcam and/or want to be anonymous
Ultimately, I think the video chat is cool BUT I want there to be a text option if someone is uncomfortable with that or just doesn't have a webcam/microphone.
Unfortunately meetings.io only seems to work for webcams/microphones. ::sad::
If someone knows of a website that will let us do the above, let me know!
I could try Google Hangouts but that requires folks to create a Google Account - I'm trying to make this as easy and anonymous (if you want to be anonymous) as possible.
Hope that all makes sense. ::big grin:: This is all an experiment for me and I'm psyched that people are joining me!! Whatever it is I need to do to get people to join, I'm all about it!

So. I want to thank HF and Mett for joining tonight! Unfortunately I was a bit distracted by the technology I think (since meetings.io still wouldn't work unless you have a webcan!) - We connected on FB but I still had a hard time paying attention to the film...
I don't think I got as much out of it as I did the first time I saw it - I had looked at is as a Man struggling against a horror that he simply couldn't control... And his fate at the end was tragic.
It didn't click with me as much with this viewing. Do I think it's an important movie? Absolutely. But it just didn't capture me as it had when I saw it forever ago.

Just in case anyone was interested, I will repost my thoughts on An American Werewolf in London from the "Last Seen 70s/80s Movie" thread:
"I have seen this film a few times before (though it had certainly been a while since my last viewing), and while I mentioned on another thread I enjoyed the Howling more than an American Werewolf in London, it is still, without question, an incredible film. The film is able to find the right balance between horror and comedy. If you like straight horror, this may not be the film for you, but otherwise it is really good. And, what is interesting is that the comedy does not detract from the horror. It really is quite complementary. There were also some great special effects and excellent makeup. Additionally, the direction draws you in from the beginning to the end. To add to this, the score really matched the film and the soundtrack was well-selected as well. The story is not particularly novel, but that is unimportant. The film is interesting because it takes traditional elements of werewolf films and uses them in new and often unexpected ways. For example, the ultimate "werewolf causes mayhem and is tracked down" scene begins in a porn theater. There was also a really good performance by the main actor and his character was very well-developed. Sadly, many of the other major actors/actresses were not as strong particularly the nurse. In fact, that whole sub-plot just seemed a bit forced and unrealistic. Many of the other minor characters were well-done though on a more positive note. While there may be some not as well-done things in the film and it is not straight horror, it is still a very strong horror film and one of the better werewolf films. If you still have not seen this film, I highly recommend it."

I totally agree with everything that Mett posted here - I'm actually surprised at myself for having written this movie off (well, SORT OF surprised - There was a period of time that I was VERY WARY of 80s horror... And I still am) - The fact of the matter is...
The direction is really tight, from the English countryside to the car wrecks in London; it's incredibly artfully done
The special effects are excellent, and I completely understand why it won best effects that year - The corpse makeup for Jack Goodman especially gave me the willies - I love it when I see a horror movie that can still make me cringe (love practical effects!)
The transformation scene was incredible. This was my first time seeing it in full and it's truly harrowing, horrifying, and well-done.
And the comedy was great! I love the subtle (yet disturbing) comedy of his victims cheering him on to kill himself to the more broad comedy of him running around the zoo naked
I loved his dreams of werewolf Nazis
I loved the final scenes of just pure mayhem, cutting between the Monster and the just pure destruction is was causing - the car crashes, broken glass, and marred bodies. There's definitely a lot that the movie is saying about violence here; I think I'd need another viewing to dissect it further (I mean, the end itself is particularly sudden and jarring - in a good way)
Unfortunately, as Mett pointed out, the very worst and weakest part was the nurse and the subplot involving their relationship - I honestly thought that it was downright creepy that she asked a patient to stay with her... I thought that most of the reactions in the hospital room (from her, the doctor), were just inappropriate. It was really the writing here that was the issue.
Good news is that the weak parts did NOT over-shadow what I ultimately thought of as a really excellent werewolf movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it will now live on as one of my favorite horror movies.
Wow - I should probably give The Howling a second try too, huh? ::wink::

Last night, metternich, ChronoGrl and I watched Ginger Snaps. Not my favorite werewolf movie, but enjoyable. I thought Mimi Rogers did a great job playing the Mom. The two actresses playing the sisters were very good, too. Loved the teeth they gave Ginger.
Yeah, that's all I have. I'm not as good at writing as the rest of you. ::stick out tongue::
Oh well, guess you'll just have to stick to typing instead.
I'll have to wait till Wednesday to watch Ginger Snaps.

I watched Ginger Snaps.
I thought it was OK. The first half was intriguing. Getting to know the two sisters, their relationship with each other & their mom, & young womanhood. Found the last half and ending disappointing.
SPOILERS....................
The slow change to werewolf, relating to puberty, specifically for a woman, was a nifty story device. But a little bit past the midway point, there was very little development, and it got fairly stale to me. Although the older sister (Ginger) continued the change to the obvious outcome (animalistic, in both ways), there was no more reveal, development nor change of the younger sister, nor their relationship. So I was waiting for the end for the last half of the film... which just seemed a bunch of filler of teen angst, smoking & saying f*ck... I was starting to think this was for teens.
Also, I thought the ending was disappointing, as it seemed abrupt, contrived & not a resolution to all the interesting aspects of the film, namely: puberty, sisterhood, daughter-mother. I'm all for 'unhappy' or 'realistic' endings, but it should still be the film's resolution. Film saying menstruation means the end of sisterhood & motherhood relationship, or AIDS is deadly? If the ending attempted to say puberty brings an end to childhood relationships & begins new adult relationships, I'd be fascinated; but I didn't see any attempt at resolution.
Am I expecting too much from a horror film? Maybe, but I got the impression Ginger Snaps was something more, not just something a little different.

So I never got around to posting about Ginger Snaps, but I thought that Sculpt's review is eloquent and on point - Sculpt outlines what I love about the movie - The relationship between the sisters and the mother - I love the allegory of Ginger becoming a werewolf with puberty...
I do agree about the end in some ways but ultimately this has become one of my favorite werewolf movies - I think it's ambitious and I like that it features two female leads - I still wonder how I would have received it when I was in high school - they're moody and goth - I probably would have idolized them in a bizarre teen angst sort of way...
