Would you consider a documentary to be a movie or a TV show?

Depends on where it was first released.

Aren't most documentaries shown on TV?

Its a film/ movie/ motion picture.... Sometimes films are created for TV.

EDIT: Documentaries make for good TV shows. ::wink::

I'm more thinking of something along the lines of Fed Up or Jesus Camp which both were released in theatres.

A movie or miniseries. I consider a TV show something ongoing

It can be both. Fahrenheit 9/11, for example, would be a movie, while America The Story of Us would be a T.V. show (under mini-series). The Universe would qualify as an actual T.V. show as it is recurrent, though it is a documentary.

I appreciate all the input!

There are documentary films made for Nat Geo, Animal Planet, Discovery, History Channel, etc., which are purely made-for-TV.

Then there are those which were made for theatrical release and became successful, such as Fahrenheit 9/11, March of the Penguins, An Inconvenient Truth, etc.

Documentaries are basically non-fiction films which document aspects of realities from either day-to-day life or historical/biological aspects. It is basically a film medium, broadly categorised in the manner of release - either as a TV show/series, or as a movie.

Why is reality tv not called "documentary tv"?

Because I'm pretty sure Real Housewives isn't a documentary.

If it documents reality, it's a documentary. So, you're saying Real Housewives is scripted and falsely marketed?

I would label it "documentary".

Netflix has its own documentary section as well as HBO.

AS FAR AS "REALITY" TV...I WOULD LABEL THAT "SHIT"

Bar Rescue is like my show though.

Would you consider a documentary to be a movie or a TV show?

In the common vernacular, I would consider "a documentary" to be a movie.

Because you've used the singular, I ascribe the trait of once-and-done, which is typically a movie -- which would then be displayed in various formats: DVD, theatres, TV shows, online, etc.

If you're looking for a more than a spontaneous impression, then I can't really add more than Vill, Met and V did... which is, of course, I know docs can be both a movie or TV show. More than ever before, docs are created for the TV format, rather than being adapted/edited for TV shows, which is/was the norm.
