View Full Version : the Villain's Halloween Marathon
The Villain

Inspired by ChronoGrl's plan and format for her marathon I've decided to do away with my exhausting 31 movies marathon for every day of October and do seven weeks with three movies a week like her plan. Mine just isn't as ambitious. I'll just be posting the movies I'm watching and everyone can join in the discussion afterwards.
First up:
Poltergeist Week
Poltergeist 1,2,3
Starting this weekend, at some point I'll be watching all three of these movies. This weeks really for my wife who will be watching with me. She's not a fan of horror but she likes these movies so I thought it would be a good place to start.

I love this movie. I've seen it a ton of times but still enjoy watching it. Good story, great acting, and lots of scary scenes. The parts with the clown and the tree always scared me as a kid. One of the best haunted house/ghost movies there is.

Next up:

Poltergeist is one of the best horror films of all-time. Once in a blue moon, when you combine two great tastes - like Toby Hooper and Spielberg, you get the best of both worlds. (or you get the worst of the other-world, if you like puns)
Polt is a film I could watch many times, too. The clown scene is one of the scariest on film.

Poltergeist is still one of my favorites. Love everything about it. I think casting Craig T. Nelson as the father was perfect.

While there were parts of the movie I enjoyed(the tree, the clown, the toy phone), I didn't really care for Poltergeist.
The medium Tangina irritated me to no end. The child actors stole the show and I found the movie dragged on a bit.
I know I'm in the minority but there you have it! ::cool::

They made for a great pairing although I've heard Spielberg was more in charge than Hooper.

What did you think of the chairs in the kitchen scene?
Tangina was irritating, but I began loving her two seconds into her first appearance. And one of the 'fun' bombs to drop at this point is to say: I think she was intended to annoy audiences. Was it the constricted high pitch voice, accent, her size, gender, weight, attractiveness level, her confidence and authority, apparent defensive smugness, her message bearing any apparent incongruity with 'Judeo-Christian' thought of the spiritual world?

I'd give Poltergeist a 9.5/10, and instead of citing all that's great about it, I'll mention the two negatives. Firstly, it's excessively expository. The family members are all shallow (not worthless) characters that don't require much exposition to fully understand. Secondly, the film panders to the audience by creating too many cute moments. For example, the sliding of the girl in the kitchen would have been more effectively "cute" if it hadn't been preceded by numerous other oh-so precious moments.
Regarding the upcoming sequel (apparently, it's not a remake), I am looking forward to seeing Sam Rockwell in father role.

Oh, Man - Poltergeist has always been one of my favorite horror movies - Thanks for letting me know that it's on Netflix. I'll have to rewatch it some time between my Frankenstein viewings.
It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but the scene that absolutely sticks in my mind is when one of the guys looks in the mirror and his face starts melting off - I've had nightmares like that and sometimes when I look at mirrors in the dark I have a flash of fear that it's going to happen to me too...
Also, the clown, of course. Because, clowns. ::EEK!::
I haven't seen either of the sequels, so I'm interested to hear what you guys think. I'm under the impression that they're not that great so I've avoided them.

Well, my brother from another mother::wink::, I found the chair scene a little lame and the mother's reaction a bit too "mystical" and "accepting". I would have had myself and my child on the next bus to anywhere.

I know what you mean and agree about too many "cute moments". But the same thing was done in "E.T." and I think its basically to soften the blows and make both subjects a bit more mainstream and family-friendly.

Hard to argue with that. Most people would be out the door, not sending their precious six-year-old daughter to take a ride on the other-world kinesis train with a helmet.
But like with the story troupes of people playfully messing with ouija boards and getting an evil guest, they take the slip-n-slide.
On a related note, the correct response isn't fear, but discernment.

Though not as good as its predecessor and nowhere near as iconic, its not a bad follow up. The original cast is back sans Dominique Dunne (Dana Freeling) who was strangled to death by her boyfriend around the time the original came out.
The movie isn't as creepy and has too many silly moments, it even ends on one, but it manages to deliver an interesting story and I respect that they tried to change it up instead of just redoing the same thing over again.
It answers some questions posed by the original one as well but one could argue that no one was really asking those questions.
One highlight was Julian Beck who played the sinister Reverend Kane. I don't think this series really needed to humanize the villain or bind it in one singular entity but he was a great villain. Sadly Julian Beck died during the filming of this movie.
Overall its got its pros and cons but its enjoyable.

First thing I have to say is this felt completely different from the other two and not in a good way. It was like watching something unconnected to the series. Except for Heather O'Rourke (Who sadly died shortly after making this film) and Zelda Rubenstein, the original cast was gone and sorely missed especially Craig T. Nelson whose behavior and mannerisms were alwats entertaining. Tom Skerrit was his replacement and he was trying way to hard. The same can be said from Nancy Allen who replaced JoBeth Williams (In a different character of course.) Her character was unbearable. The worst character though was Dr. Seaton who was incredibly stupid and annoying.
The acting was terrible, the dialogue was excruciating and the scary parts were too over the top. The mirror effects were pretty cool though and the storyline wasn't so bad that I couldn't focus. I did find myself interested to see how it ended even though it fell flat at the end. The worst in the trilogy.
5/10
Coming up next I'll have the next theme and three movies of the week.

Same here. It's always been a part of my wonderful fun childhood days! Even few weeks back it was showing on a TV channel and I had a blast to revisit this one of my favorite all timers!!
Beast from 20,000 is also another great fun monster flick, it was even released just a year before when the Big G conquered Japan for the very first time!
Troll Hunter is a modern day masterpiece in Monster flick genre, IMO! Totally got me amazed how they pulled the idea and made it such cleverly & interesting way. The effects were great also.

SO. Watched Poltergeist last night and it didn't disappoint. It's been a while since I've seen it but certain horrifying scenes, like the flesh peeling out has always stuck with me and definitely still freaked me out.
A couple of things that I picked up on for this viewing:
Typically in horror movies (and action movies in general), I hate it when you have multiple endings... The tension seems to end and THEN... and THEN... The Grudge remake is a perfect example of this that drives me crazy.
As for Poltergeist, though, after Carolanne is recovered, the tension picks up again - The hauntings continue - And these scenes are really, truly scary - The scene of the wife falling into the pool with the corpses - Ugh, yet another scene that has always stuck with me and it absolutely creeped me out this time as well - Disgusting and horrifying. I also love this woman's struggle to get to her children, the monster that appears in front of their door, and how she ultimately saves them.
I loved it.
I think there was something else I was going to write about but for the life of me I can't remember.
Bottom line: Still successful and horrifying after all these years.
I tried watching Part II last night but ultimately gave up - I couldn't get into it, I thought that some of the dialogue was just awful and there was no tension. Sorry, but I didn't bother with Part III either.
And now the next week is......

Every horror fan has a subgenre that they call their own, a personal favorite that they feel strongly about. For me, it's giant monster movies. With that, here are the three movies i will be watching for this week:

Hope everyone can watch as well and share your thoughts. I'll be sharing mine as i watch them.
Well this is exciting! I'll make an effort to watch Troll Hunter, at a minimum. And I'll weigh in on the Tremors discussion when it comes up.
If Beast is streaming somewhere free I'll check it out as well!

I actually like the fake-out ending. Where you think everything is okay and everyone is safe and then BAM!!! Never gets old for me. Yeah i don't blame you about the sequels, like i said i just watched those for the wife. Not a huge fan of them. Hope to hear from you about the new movies.

I love this movie. I have ever since i was a kid. This is my kind of movie, cool monsters that look really good. Likable characters and good dialogue and i love that they get trapped. That doesn't happen enough in monsters movies. Plus i loved that there were rules. The monsters could only sense vibration so there were certain things that the protagonists could do to escape them. I also love the ending, very suspenseful and exciting. A great homage to 50's monster movies and a damn good one itself.

Well, I managed to watch the film the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms today. At first, I was not sure as it seemed to have a slow start, but once it got going I really enjoyed it. It is definitely a classic 1950s monster movie. Interestingly, the film was released the year before the original Godzilla. While Godzilla certainly surpassed Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, there is little doubt that Beast From 20,000 Fathoms was a high quality film. One can easily see that this film helped to establish the standard for these types of films that would be used for decades to come. Despite this, the story was really solid and it definitely drew me in. The special effects were not the best, but they were certainly pretty good for a film in the early 50s. In addition, I felt there was some solid character development. I particularly liked the female lab assistant and the main character, the professor. I would have liked to have seen more destruction particularly in New York, but considering how early this film was, I am not surprised. Overall, an excellent film, I throughly enjoyed it.

One of my favorite movies, one of the best giant monster movies and one of the best found footage movies. It has a great story, likable characters and good realistic acting. The Trolls are awesome looking and you get a lot of good looks at them without it being overdone. Definitely recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it. A movie that every horror fan should see.

Cool, I'm looking forward to a slower paced B&W film with deeper story, good actors & character development, and stop-action animation to boot. It's been over 20 yrs since I've seen Beastfrom20000fathoms.
I'll see Trollhunter tonight if I can get an english dub at the DVD rental. I'm not in the mood for reading a movie. http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/shifty.gif

I actually like subtitles. I put them on even during English speaking moviesI like having english subtitles with english films when I can't understand what the heck the actors are saying, which is usually a couple times a film. But can't properly catch the rich subtext of a film (facial expressions, body language, purposely placed objects & paintings in a room, etc) when my eyes slicing back-&-forth across the bottom of the screen reading text.
Not to mention I have to stop most modern subtitled films, ten plus times, just to read all the sentences that sometimes only flash a half second on the screen.
I highly respect the vocal delivery of good actors, still, some voice actors are better. Either way, I prefer english films, and I'll watch the occasional subtitled film, but most of the time, I prefer a dud over subtitles.

*Possible (Minor) Spoilers*
I managed to watch the TrollHunter today and I have to say that I loved it. It may sound like some cheesy B-Horror flick, but it really isn't. It is hard to believe that a film with a "topic" such as this would work, but it actually works quite well. Despite the nature of the film, I was able to suspend my disbelief. The film may have seemed absurd at times, but it had a certain logic. It was almost like they realized what the audience would be thinking and then would answer the questions they had. One such example of this being after the characters first saw a couple of trolls killed, a veterinarian explained why they exploded or turned to stone. Eventually, later in the film, when the characters encounter others who do not know or even suspect anything of that nature, you are thinking to yourself "how could they not think trolls"? The film really got me thinking maybe there are trolls in Scandinavia, luckily I am not Christian...lol. That's when you know it's well-done. Additionally, I loved how they added that whole government keeping it secret, it paralleled a common theme in films that deal with the alien idea. That was what was so interesting about the film, it utilized many of the elements of other "found footage" films, but in a way never done before. In addition to this, there was some really top-notched acting. The characters were also really well-developed. You really are able to connect with them and you are able to see them change over the course of the film. It is really interesting to see them before their realization about trolls and after. There is definitely a real change. This is a really difficult thing for a foreign film as sometimes there is a certain disconnect because of the language. Yet, this film was able to minimize this. Additionally, there were some excellent special effects. The trolls looked really good. The film does not necessarily take the "less is more" approach, but, like with so many other things, it just works in this film. This pretty much sums it up, though I just want to add one last thing the scenery in this film is absolutely stunning! If you have not seen this film, I highly recommend it.

I'm really glad you liked it. I agree on the explanations. I always notice in TV and Film when they have a hard time delivering exposition so whenever I see it done in a good way I always take notice and Trollhunter did it very well. We were experiencing it as the characters did and as you said they did a good job anticipating what the audience would be wondering about.

I've loved Tremors since I was a kid even though scary movies terrified me as a kid
I think that I saw Tremors when I was about ten or so - It was at the after school program at the YMCA (I remember this because I'm pretty sure that my parents wouldn't have let me watch it) - It scared me SO MUCH that that night at swim practice (I was on a swim team from age 8 - 18), I was convinced that one of those things was going to burst through the bottom of the pool and eat me. I remember sprinting DESPERATELY every workout to get from one end of the pool to the other...
I don't think my parents were very happy that I was so terrified... ::sad::
I'm not sure if I've seen it since, but I've been meaning to to see how I'd react now (I doubt it would scare me that much). ::wink::

Well, to be fair, it's not that the pointedly forbade horror movies - My dad showed me a LOT of old black and white horror and classic scifi - I think that they just weren't into modern horror so it never occurred to them to show it to me or prevent me from watching it, you know? And I didn't discover it on my own until I was older because I wasn't interested either.

Ya, before cable, if it was on TV, basically parents didn't think they had to worry. My folks didn't want us kids watching Soap for a time, but never restrictions on horror. I'd watch horror films with my mom all the time. Oddly, my folks took the family to see Jaws when I was only 6. I didn't want to dangle my legs over the bed that night.

My first entry into the horror genre was at five with the original Friday the 13th. My parents were never really that strict on stuff like that. They believed that I would find out about certain things anyway. In addition, even at a young age, they wanted me to learn how to make my own decisions. I mean I could not watch porn or anything like that (considering that is illegal and I would have had no interest anyway). I watched some of the older classics like Dracula (1931), which I loved and still love to this day, but most of the films I watched were newer for that time. I was and still am a huge slasher fan with Friday the 13th being my favorite franchise. I ended up introducing my nephew to horror at roughly the same age as I was. His parent, Jeannie, who was the one who actually took care of him, was completely fine with it. She had a similar policy as my parents likely due to being raised by them. His father was not as big of a fan of it though. He was pretty much absent though, ended up moving to Alaska for a few years actually. I cannot remember when I introduced my niece to horror, but she probably would have been six or seven. I did so with The Shining, which definitely terrified her. So much so she did not really watch horror for a few years. Today, she is starting to get into the genre and I look forward to introducing her.

You saw the uncut Friday the 13th at age 5, or some broadcast TV edit? Just my opinion, Mett, I don't think a 5 yr old is mature enough for that material. A (live action, real human) murderer, hiding everywhere, under your bed, etc, trying to literally kill you, plus the graphic violence... that seems like mental torture for a 5 yr old.
I've read some material and heard presentations from psychologists on possible/likely negative effects of graphic horror on young children, and I wouldn't recommend anyone put young children in front of horror films. No offense.
Nobody put me in front of a horror film (except that one Jaws incident). I sought them out, and choose them, on my own (if we don't count TV)... Scooby Doo, Space Giants, Ultraman, Godzilla, every type of Creature Feature TV program (classic horror), library books. None of my bro/sis were into horror except me. My mom didn't join me until years after I was already into horror, for which I think she was "returning" to horror.

I saw the VHS version, I assume that would be the uncut version. I am very familiar with that type of opinion and have always strongly disagreed with it. I am not saying I would force a child to watch it, but if they just so happen to be in the room, so be it. That is their choice as they can always leave. I am familiar with what has been said, but that is the real world. And, graphic violence affects everyone.
My parents never liked horror, so I saw it myself. I do not remember the exact circumstances of my introduction. I know it was not due to my parents loving the genre because they never did. I understand why parents do it, but it always annoyed me. People put way too much emphasis on it. And, I am sorry no one is going to become more violent because of horror. Sure, those increases can be shown in the lab over the short-term, but violence is based in many things. That only plays a minor role. And, I believe that I remember some studies showing that if you emphasize the fictionalness of the media, it drastically reduced the supposed effect.
I believe some reasonable limits should be set. I mean a young child should not watch something like Cannibal Holocaust. Overall, though I think it is okay to watch horror even graphic horror.

Great story Chrono. I doubt it would scare you much now.
Watched Beast from 20,000 Fathoms the other night. I'll be posting my review and next weeks theme later tonight

I enjoy them all in different ways. Trollhunter i think is probably the best of the three and is the only one on my Top 20 list. Tremors is a personal favorite horror movie of mine that i've loved as a child and Beast is a great relaxing, fun black and white 50's movie to watch which i love watching.

There are a lot of great monster movies from the 50's and there are a lot of good giant monster movies but this has to be one of the best ones. The story is really good. It's simple but i think that's what makes it better. For giant monster movies, you don't really need a huge complex story. Not that i don't like complicated plot's but i find it unnecessary for a giant monster movie. The new Godzilla movie for example had a ridiculous plot that definitely took away from the film. It's a slow burn sure but i enjoy a monster movie with a steady build up with a satisfying pay off which this one definitely had. The characters are all likable, the writing and acting are good and the monster is really cool looking and interesting. Probably one of the best giant monsters in film history. Anyone interested in these types of movies should check this out.

I wish I had seen Chucky when I was much younger because seeing it a few years ago just didn't have that much of an impact on me... As for Dead Silence, I remember being disappointed BUT considering how much love it gets around here, I'd love to give it another try (maybe I just wasn't in the mood) - As for Magic; funny timing; the hubby was just talking about it and said it's really good! I'm going to see if I can track it down.

Yeah, as I was big into slashers as a child, I was able to see it then. I always loved it, most of the sequels aren't bad. I love Bride of Chucky, it was hilarious. I am surprised you did not enjoy Dead Silence, personally I was highly impressed. A solid film by Wan, the use of "dead silence" was brilliantly done. The atmosphere was perfect as well. As you said though, you may just not have been in the mood that sometimes does occur. Yes, you definitely need to see Magic. AMC used to have it on every year for their annual FearFest, but they have not done that in a while.
Yes, actually I am. I plan to see it on the 11th of October with my nephew, niece, sister's friend, and possibly my best friend.

I saw the trailer before As Above, So Below, and I think I died a bit because of all the jump scares. Honestly, I'm gonna wait until the DVD comes out, though. I'm not dying to see it. What made the Conjuring so good was that it had no jump scares. That's why I'm sort of not too excited.

So, as I was watching this time around, I thought about what bugged me about it the first time:
Donnie Walberg - Not just him but how his character was written; I just thought he was unbelievable and unprofessional
The procedural - There's a procedural/mystery element to the movie and for some reason I didn't like the that wraparound
Overwrought direction - There's nothing subtle about the movie and I found it over-done...
The story - I don't think that I was much of a fan of supernatural movies at the time (I think I was more into home invasion films)
THIS time around...
Well, I might have been *ahem* excited to see Jason (True Blood), so that was distracting but oddly enough, but in a good kind of way
The death scenes were fantastic - Creepy, gory
Lots of jump scares, but I think they worked, and DAMN are the dummies creepy
I bought more into the story this time around - I don't think it clicked with me that part of what this movie is doing is creating a new folklore around the dolls - I didn't buy into it the first time around but I liked it a lot this time around
All in all, I think it's a legitimately atmospheric, creepy film that creates its own legend... You need to be able to accept it in order to enjoy the movie but maybe people are less cynical than I was circa 2007. ::wink::

Nothing terrified me more as a child than Chucky. Watching it now it's kinda silly but there are still some parts that freak me out. I love the effects they use for Chucky. He still looks like a doll while also making him look real when he comes alive. One thing i noticed this time around was the score. I've never noticed how good and effective it is. Another thing that makes this one so memorable is Brad Dourif's portrayal of Chucky. It wouldn't be the same without him in the role. This is one of my favorite horror movies despite it's cheesiness.

This isn't the first time I've seen this movie. I remember watching it about a year ago with a friend of mine. The killer doll concept was definitely original for the time and a very disturbing concept. That really isn't what scared me, though. The shots from Chucky's point of view provided extra scares, and the film never stopped being intense and scary. The special effects were quite amazing, and they still hold up 26 years later. I also enjoyed the little bit of humor the movie had.

I can't believe you have never seen Child's Play, it is an absolute classic. While it is not the greatest of the slashers, it is definitely one of the high quality ones. There are some excellent performances, in particular by Brad Dourif. He really is a talented actor, it is too bad that he never really got the career to match the caliber of his acting. The score is really effective and while the score in the credits was not employed during the film, I really loved that part of the score in particular. It is absolutely beautiful. Overall, the entire score definitely adds an extra layer to the film. The atmosphere is pretty dark too. Even during the daytime scenes, there is a certain darkness to them. On the surface, the plot is kind of ridiculous, but, for some reason, it works quite well. There are elements of drama, but they do not overshadow the horror. This film never really scared me, but I have always enjoyed it. Villain mentioned the effects and I have to agree, they were very solid for a film from the 1980s. They really helped to add to the film. What is especially interesting is that for most of the film we do not even see Chucky do any of the killing. That really does not occur until later in the film. He is essentially off screen. I would give the film a 9/10 as there was some cheesiness (this did not detract too much from the film though). The sequels never manage to match the quality of this film though. They don't even get close. I love Bride of Chucky, but for very different reasons than this film. As a horror, Bride of Chucky is not the best, but it works well as a comedy. There really is not a whole lot of humor in the first film. Sure, there are some one-liners, but overall, it is relatively devoid of the humor that so often characterized the later films.
By the way, I managed to watch the film last night.

I saw Dead Silence last night. Wow... that's a quality made film. I found quite scary at parts. The cinematography, sets, lighting, sound, and constructed shots of scary scenes, were really well done. It peaked high on my scary meter.
The story, plot and characters, were not nearly on par with everything else I mentioned. I'm not citing the actors, they didn't have much to work with. The story/plot/characters were shallow.
Too bad the producers didn't use some of this large budget to hire a good writer to expand on the story concept adding depth to plot & character; cause with this directorial team, this could have been a huge film hit.

So this is the second or third time i've seen this but it's still very creepy. The dolls are used very well. They're not shoved down your throat or are shown running all over the place. For a movie where it's the focal point like Child's Play it would be needed but the dolls are secondary to the ghost story that is prominent here which is very interesting. Both of the themes could have done ok on their own but combining them made for a very creative and spooky movie. I loved the folklore feel they gave the movie with the dolls and the womans backstory and the curse she started. I also liked that their were rules for the movie being that the ghost could only get you when you screamed. It was talked about more then it was utilized but it was still good.
The one downside to the movie is Donnie Wahlberg. The whole movie he just seems bored like he really didn't want to be there and it shows in his acting. Given the right role, Donnie can be a very good actor but he just whispers and shrugs his way through this movie. Also his character made no sense, one minute he's telling Ryan Kwanten's character that the dolls has nothing to do with his wife's murder but then he tells him that he was stealing evidence and trying to hide it when he buried the thing. But if it was evidence why didn't the police take it? They don't just let people walk away with vital evidence. Also there was no reason for him to dig up the doll graves except to move the story along.
Aside from Wahlberg this is a very effective interesting ghost story.

DEAD SILENCE -- SPOLIERS......
Well, I'm not an expert in law, but Ryan's bedroom (entire apartment, I would guess) is a crime scene. Ryan can't go by himself, break the police tape, and take things from the crime scene. This would be Obstruction of Justice, which one can be arrested for. Conviction is another matter. Since it's his home, at some point police take all their pictures and evidence, and then he can live there.
Ryan can't steal from himself, and Obstruction of Justice (OOJ) is continually unfolding. As a case evolves, something can become relevant, and thus becomes OOJ. Of course police detectives would be following Ryan, and trying to get him to say something that would help solve the case. And police are allowed to lie to cause that to happen.
So I didn't find it too strange for Donnie to say the doll had nothing to do with the case, to get Ryan to utter something important. And then to also tell Ryan he's arresting him for "stealing evidence", and then not arrest him -- whatever shakes acorns off the tree.
But then again, the film doesn't really bother to explain these things because it's pretty shallow.

Yeah but for it to be evidence wouldn't it have to be taken down to the police station and locked away as evidence? If it's just left at the scene of the crime i don't see how he can say that he was stealing evidence.

If it's just left at the scene of the crime i don't see how he can say that he was stealing evidence.Right, that's what I'm saying in a roundabout way. Police take items (interviews & pictures) they guess might be evidence. Items are taken to the police evidence lockup. But what is "evidence" is continually evolving in a case. Items taken may never be used by either prosecutors or defenders. And new items from a "former" crime scene may be taken later if the investigator comes to believe it might be evidence.
If you take something you own from a 'former' crime scene and bury it, investigators are going to get it and pick it apart. It's not 'stealing'. They could arrest someone for doing that, but they'd have to prove it's relevant evidence, or prove that you were trying to confuse or waste their time, that is obstruct the process, to convict you of OOJ.
So items left at a former crime scene are not 'evidence', but they can become evidence later.

Well either away it came across in the movie like he was just an asshole cop who was looking for ways to put him away for his wife's murder despite having no proof. Whether or not it was a mistake of the filmmakers, it doesn't change that his character was written badly and acted badly. Really low point of the movie which is disappointing considering the rest of the cast was pretty good.

Wow this was not what i was expecting but this was really good. This definitely gave my movies a more well rounded experience as this was a completely different type of horror movie then the other too. But it was just as scary. Anthony Hopkins is amazing in this. He's seriously creepy both when hes playing corky and when hes in Fats mode. The story felt a little rushed but once you get into you can't stop watching. Really recommend.

I've always found clowns scary, theres just something unsettling about them. One thing i like about watching horror movies about clowns is that theres just something interesting about watching something thats supposed to make you laugh and bring you entertainment instead filling you with terror. I knew you'd like Magic. You know quality performance when you see it. And patience... the film has depth setting, and I wouldn't call it misdirection, but almost a change of season in mood pacing.
I've never found clowns scarey or unsettling, have no idea what people are talking about. http://forums.civfanatics.com/images/smilies/idunno.gif
Killer Klowns from Outer Space is a lot fun. I thought it was very smart and creative. I read a sequel is in the works, from the same two brother writer/directors.

I've loved this movie ever since i was a little kid and i never get tired of watching it. It's funny and creepy at the same time and the clowns are awesome looking. There are a lot of great quotable lines and it manages to create a good atmosphere to it that's actually trying to be scary instead of just being silly all the time. One thing i noticed this time around is my feelings towards Detective Mooney played by John Vernon. Usually i can't stand him but this time i found him hilarious. Between talking to himself, actually the name of the movie and his ridiculous steadfast belief that the whole town was playing a joke on him he was a great character. This movie is a lot of fun, offers up some great looking clowns and is actually pretty creepy.

Although there is a stigma attached to this film, and for good reason, not to mention the acting being terrible this isnt all that bad. It's not too scary and in fact plays out like a long episode of Are You Afraid of The Dark? But it has its scary moments and is entertaining throughout.

GHOST WEEK

Loved Changeling and Sixth Sense and I understand your viewing preference for Frighteners but any of these great Asian Ghost flick (i.e. Pulse, Ju-on, Shutter, Dark Water) or classic like The Woman In Black (Original) or even modern day masterpieces like The Others, Devil's Backbone or The Orphanage would be a better choice, IMO.
