Hello Friends and horror junkies!
It's but the beginning of September but I am starting to think and get excited about Halloween!
This year I'd like to celebrate All Hallow's Eve by hosting a six-week horror movie marathon to revisit some horror favorites and FINALLY check out a few that I've had on my "MUST SEE" list for a while.
WHAT'S THE PLAN?
The idea is to watch three movies a week - A Sunday matinee/early evening, a Tuesday evening showing and Thursday evening showing (I don't want to steal Fridays and Saturdays!).
The overall THEME of the Marathon is:
The Old and The New - Genres through the Decades - A look at what some consider "classics" juxtaposed with modern re-imaginings.
SO HOW DO I PARTICIPATE?
Simple. I'll post the schedule here and we can Post Live on a Horror.Com Thread. I'll also set up a Skype session for Live and Video Chatting. I'll let you know where you can stream the movie (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) and you can join either through streaming, renting a DVD, or diving into your own collection.
Not able to make a specific time? No worries! We'll keep the thread open throughout the week to discuss each week's theme.
WHAT'S THE LINEUP?
Still in progress (definitely subject to change!), but here are my thoughts so far:
Week 1: Frankenstein's Monster
Dates: September 14th, 16th, and 18th
Frankenstein (1931)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Also in consideration: Frankenstein's Army (2013) & Frankenweenie (2012)
Week 2: Werewolves (There Wolves!)
Dates: September 21st, 23rd, and 25th
The Wolf Man (1941)
American Werewolf in London (1981)
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Week 3: Vampires
Dates: September 28th, 30th, and October 1st
Vampyr (1932)
Interview with a Vampire (1994)
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
Week 4: Zombies
Dates: October 5th, 7th, and 9th
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Week 5: Slashers/Serial Killers
Dates: October 12th, 14th, and 16th
M (1931)
Psycho (1960)
Halloween (1978)
Week 6: The Supernatural
Dates: October 19th, 21st, and 23rd
The Haunting (1963)
Legend of Hell House (1973)
The Changeling (1980)
Also in Consideration: House on Haunted Hill (either version)
Week 7: Let's get Meta
Dates: October 26th, 28th, and 30th
Evil Dead II (1987)
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Also in Consideration: You're Next (2011)
This was really tough to put together because I KNOW there's a lot missing here - Ghosts/Supernatural, J-horror, just to list two...
But there are just so many moves and such little time before Halloween. :danger:
Plus, this may or may not spill into November - And I might just spice up my Friday and Saturday nights with a few supplementary classics here or there.
SO
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
I'd love to make this a social event - Think about movies you would swap in/swap out and think about different ways we could chat/connect during the viewings. I know that timing will be tough for international folks but I'm also trying to coordinate friends coming over for viewings, so I'll need to pick something doable in EST - Probably:
Sundays - Sometime between 1 and 6 EST (or who knows? I might move these to evenings as well)...
Tuesdays & Thursdays: 8:00 EST
The idea here is join in when you can. ::cool::
I'll continue to post we get closer to next week - Please feel free to post any thoughts/feedback! I'm really psyched about this!

1. I don't have a membership to Amazon (can't afford it)
2. Tuesday night is NCIS
3. Sunday is football
4. Can't Skype, don't have a webcam
What if I've recently seen one of the movies? I'm thinking of Only Lovers Left Alive, just saw it last week.

Totally stealing your idea. My plan was to watch a movie every day but last year that got exhausting. I like your plan but I think I'll have to do my own

I mostly (only) have access to movies off YouTube and no Skype or webcam but if the movie is on YouTube, i could watch it at the same time and comment on the thread. You'd be surprised how many movies are on youtube.

Thursday is football night! Dammit!
Yeah, I figured there'd be a conflict with football, especially doing it on Sunday. I originally was going to do 1 night a week but couldn't decide on such a small list! Hopefully you can make a few or at least join in some of the posts afterwards. :)
How do you get in the skype session?
That's a good question - I actually need to figure that piece out. The conversation I had with myself:
--- You should figure out a Live Video Chat!
--- Great!! I think I've done it with Google + Hangouts before.
--- But not everyone may know how to use Google Hangouts!
--- Well, let's do Skype, then!
--- Can Skype even DO that??
--- Dunno; it MUST, right?
...
So I'm not sold on the Chat function yet -I need to look at options - Maybe Google Hangout would be a better thing to do - You're young and Internet-savvy; any recommendations? ::wink::
1. I don't have a membership to Amazon (can't afford it)
2. Tuesday night is NCIS
3. Sunday is football
4. Can't Skype, don't have a webcam
What if I've recently seen one of the movies? I'm thinking of Only Lovers Left Alive, just saw it last week.
1. Hopefully a few of them will be streaming on Netflix. If not, I know that YouTube typically has quite a few if you look. I'll try to do research before each session. :) Personally, I think what I'm going to do is "Up" my Netflix subscription to three DVD's for this month and next; I think that'll be cheapest for me.
2. DVR it! ;)
3. Yeah, I know. I didn't want to steal Fridays or Saturdays though
4. Whether it's Skype or another Messanger tool, I want to find something with chat functionality so it's OK if you don't have a webcam.
And of COURSE come and comment if you've seen the movies - At any time! I'm still trying to suss out how the "Live Viewing" will work - Whether or not video chat is truly a good idea (or if folks will get annoyed if other folks are talking). At a minimum, I want to settle on a Messanger App or site, and bring the discussion on here too. ::cool::
Totally stealing your idea. My plan was to watch a movie every day but last year that got exhausting. I like your plan but I think I'll have to do my own
Well, I REALLY hope that you can join in a bunch of these - I love talking Dr. Who with you and think it would be a blast to talk horror during and after we've just watched something. :danger:
I like this - need to work out the time differences.
Awesome! I might be able to move the weekday showings to 7:00 EST if that helps; I just need enough time to get home from work, set up, and etc...
I mostly (only) have access to movies off YouTube and no Skype or webcam but if the movie is on YouTube, i could watch it at the same time and comment on the thread. You'd be surprised how many movies are on youtube.
Good news is that if we choose to use Skype as a live chat, it's totally free and you can use it even if you don't have a Webcam. ::cool::
OK, I'm in, sounds like a blast.
Awesome! I'm so psyched!! :danger:
...
So if you guys have a better recommendation for a Live Chat (potential Video Chat but not required) during the movie, let me know - I only have experience with Skype and Google+ but I'm sure there are other options out there.

Really great idea & I'm really looking forward to see it works out well. This sort of activity is needed for HDC once or twice a year, IMO.
But sadly, I can't join this time not only for the time difference issue but actually it's getting kinda hard (though I'm trying good lately ;D) for me to spend some time in watching movies...as my little princess is getting more & more demanding and that's just fascinating. For near about more than a month my wife & the daughter was in my In-law's residence and now they have come back home...at first I thought it'd take time for her to recognize me as I used to go there & saw her only once & twice a week back then and thinking it might take some time for her to remember & recognize me as her father and she is just now 4 & half month old. But the strange part is I guess nature has its own way to develop & maintain the beautiful bonding between a father & daughter. Cause every time I go close to her she gets excited & starts laughing & loves to cuddling with me more than anybody around her! It's just magical!
Oh, sorry for the off topic discussion.
Best of luck, Chrono! ::smile::

I like your idea Chrono, but I guess I would maybe make a suggestion because what you are trying to do will be fairly difficult to pull off.
I belong to a Classical Music group and run what has been a pretty successful event each week which is basically the Weekend Symphony. It's kind of like a book club I guess.
Every Friday I post a Classical Symphony (from a very large list) and each person basically chooses a recording of that particular symphony and listens to it over the weekend (although technically they have till the next Friday's posting) to listen.
So basically everyone posts which recording they will be listening to and once they listen to it, they post their thoughts and comments. I've kept it going for almost a year and a half and each week we have probably 20-40 different people participate.
You might consider a Weekly Monster kind of like what you described. Like Week #1 everyone picks a Frankenstein related movie or as many movies as they can fit into their schedule. Perhaps express watching a favorite, and/or one they've never seen, etc. and over that week people can post which movies they watched and their thoughts and comments on them.
You also might consider something similar to what I do, and post a weekly movie not just leading up to Halloween but each week and as each person watches they can post their thoughts and comments. Maybe go through our big "HDC 1896-2012 100+ Years Of Cinema" list or something.
Anyway, just some suggestions.

I love this, RDB - In fact, when choosing movies, I had a hard time choosing between something that I know I'll love, or something I've never seen vs. say something that I think more people would like.
So maybe a good idea would be -
Keep on the weekly topic.
Still maintain showtimes (because God knows if I don't schedule it I'll putz around and probably not watch)
Ask people to watch either what I'm watching OR something else on topic.
Awesome!!

Great idea, Chrono! I'd love to join live chat, but I'm on PST time, and don't think the timing will work out with work and family. I'll try to follow along though -- sounds fun.
Regarding live chat, Skype is good but you'd have to become Contacts with everyone in the chat, which requires getting each username, making the request, then waiting for them to accept. It's also a bit "permanent" for your account, since you'll now be Contacts with everyone.
Google Hangouts is probably a bit easier since I *think* you just need to know each Google account (or I think non-gmail addresses work too) and add them to a Hangout (we use them at work every week, but I've never actually set one up). The downside is that some users may not have Chrome installed, which I think is required (or the Hangouts app on mobile).
The up-and-comer that might take over them both is HipChat, but since it's currently less common, I'm guessing no one has it installed, and it would take some learning to administer a Room since it's different than the other two more common choices.

Yeah, it's tough trying to find a time that works for everyone (happens to me at work every time I try to schedule a "global" conference call! ::wink::) - Maybe with Sunday nights being a little earlier you can join. If not, then definitely the discussion threads. ::cool::
YouTube actually has a lot of movies available, too - Might be worth looking at as well.

And thanks for the rundown on these - Maybe I'll stay away from Skype because not everyone would have it and that way people don't have to download anything. I'll look into Google Hangouts & HipChat a bit more too.
Remember back in AOL days when all you had to do was create a chat room??? ::wink::

This is a really good selection and variety of horror films. The only thing I was surprised about was the lack of a ghost/supernatural week. No Halloween season is complete without some supernatural films. Though I do understand there is only so much time until Halloween. Even better, I own all of these films (including the also considering ones), except Frankenstein's Army (though this one is on Netflix Instant), Frankenweenie, and Only Lover's Left Alive. I know that there are a number of people here who are not big fans of the original Dracula, but I have always loved it. Honestly, my favorite of the classic Universal monster films. I do not consider it slow paced in the least.

So I'm thinking about swapping out THE ALIEN THREAT week for a Supernatural week - I could watch the original House on Haunted Hill or the original Haunting... And/or Legend of Hell House...
I've seen the Alien movies that I've mentioned and I'm thinking that it can't be Halloween without ghosts, right??
Also I'm thinking of swapping out Psycho from Slasher week for Sleepaway Camp, which I've never seen...

One of the best aspects of The Haunting is the sound. You'll hear sound effects right out of Evil Dead 2 (recreated, not ripped), especially the "breaking into our world" sequence. In fact, the story sequence of The Haunting has similarities to Evil Dead 2.

I will miss The Thing (1982), but I agree with swapping out aliens for supernatural, Halloween really is not complete without supernatural. The original Haunting would be a good one. The others would be good too, personally I would go for two movies that are scarier, but those are not bad choices in any case (The Changeling, Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project are a few off the top of my head). As for slashers, I love Psycho (which is really not a slasher), but if you have not seen Sleepaway Camp, I would say that would be good to replace it with. You really need to see Sleepaway Camp, it was really good.

The Changeling is a good choice. I don't think I saw the whole film yet. The Entity 1982 is a good choice too. Both haven't been 'overseen'.
For Slashers, I think Peeping Tom would be a good choice, as it hasn't been over played like Halloween and Psycho. Plus I haven't seen it. I understand it's not a mind-numbing Friday the 13th slasher, it's more in the Psycho vein. Night of the Hunter would be a good choice too.

I would definitely recommend The Changeling for the supernatural week, along with The Woman in Black (1989)... I'd throw The Sentinel in there too, but it might not be to everyone's tastes....
If you can get hold of a few of the M.R James adaptations filmed for the BBC they are great and clock in around 30mins. Highly recommended. Whistle and I'll Come to You (1968) and A Warning to the Curious (1972) are quality.

Chrono and hammerfan (really????) you two both need to see The Haunting. It is by far the best haunted house movie ever made - and that's not just MY opinion. I don't care what any other nay-sayers around here might opine- The Haunting is ground zero for haunted houses. It's the template all others come from.
Stylish, subtle, and just seething with subtext. A filmic masterpiece.

Super Ditto!!
Sorry...but as a huge fan of the original Haunting I must say...I'm  & feel sad for Hammy & Chrono here...as HDC's 2 great Horror Movie aficionados, it's a SHAME that you still haven't seen this Masterpiece! Like NE said, it should consider as the Holy Book for any young or new Horror (Haunted House) film maker.
STOP DOING WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING NOW...GO AND FIND THIS MOVIE IN WHATEVER WAY POSSIBLE ASAP, THEN PLEASE SEE IT INSTANTLY AND MAKE YOUR THIS YEAR'S HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!!

After watching THE EVIL, I'm interested in revisiting THE ENTITY.
Those who prefer to imagine horror rather than see it, THE HAUNTING is a can't-miss. I found it rather tedious, as the essence of the medium is to show, not evoke. For the majority of its runtime, I had to do the scribe's work, and I don't recall there being anything particularly clever about its non-narrative aspects.

Oh, I know. It's not a conscious thing, it's just that I haven't gotten around to it. I definitely want to see it because I've heard so many good things about it, not the least of which is Julie Harris's performance.

Hrm... So maybe I should watch The Haunting separately from my marathon. I'm having fun but the live chat distracts me.

Unless you don't like it (which is unlikely), you should still consider keeping it. It is a perfect supernatural movie for the Halloween season.

Straker, you do have a secret treasure trove of cool films (like Street of Crocodiles). I'm gonna check those out. I would never know about these if you didn't mention them. Keep em coming.

To date, I've never seen a film go where The Entity did - like the plexiglass room in the laboratory. It's unique.
The Haunting - Even in film, I think some things are best left to the superior format of the imagination. Yes, in film, show us, don't tell us, but film still takes place in the mind. Sound & innuendo are quite effective for that.
Also with The Haunting, I could see where you'd find some parts tedious, but that's where the subtleties of actors come in. In those 'slower parts', one has to really pay close attention to the subtle facial, voice and body postures of the actors - they're conveying a lot of subtext: how the Dr Markway feels about the vulnerable Nell, Theo flirting with Nell, etc; how that's shaping what's happening in the house, and how it's going to turn out. The characters are making the outcomes & story, not the entity of the house.

Thanks for your input so far, guys! Just updated...
Week 6: The Supernatural
Dates: October 19th, 21st, and 23rd
The Haunting (1963)
Legend of Hell House (1973)
The Changeling (1980)
Also in Consideration: House on Haunted Hill (either version)
I feel like it's missing a more "modern" supernatural film but I've seen quite a lot of them and they're fresh in my memory (Blair Witch, the PA movies, J-Horror, etc...) - I think I'm going to take the opportunity to watch supernatural movies I haven't seen (Note: Don't torch me over Legend of Hell House - That one I HAVE seen; it's just been a while ::stick out tongue::).

I hold firm that this film is a melodrama masquerading as a haunted house flick, which explains its mass appeal.

I have a suggestion for next year, if you do this again: giant monsters, i.e., Godzilla, Them!, Tarantula, The Giant Gila Monster, etc.

Hey friends! Happy Horror Hump Day!
This movie marathon is making me EXTREMELY happy, so thank you to all who have participated so far!
I think that I might make a couple of tweaks to the schedule...
Since I am turning into an OLD MAID, the 8:00 weekday start time is pushing the evening out later than I'd like (add in fun post-movie conversation time and I'm getting to bed closer to midnight!) - I'd like to propose a 7:00 start time for the Tuesday and Thursday shows... What do you think?

Excellent choices. The original Nippon version of Godzilla is a good film to see with friends, depression is best experienced together.
Interesting... did you know Gila and Attack of the Killer Shrews was made back-to-back by Ray Kellogg? So, with the skype room, can you hear people's comments well? and is there a delay? Cause Gila sucks, & without lampooning is a bore. I might recommend a better film, or the MST2K version instead.
Tarantula is a decent 50's film, maybe a bit overseen for a film with not a lot of re-watchability, IMO.
I recommend better &/or lesser seen giant monster films:
20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) - Ray Harryhausen does some of his finest stopaction animation.
Pacific Rim (2013) - excellent Del Toro film
Destroy All Monsters (1968) - best Godzilla sci-fi film
Jurassic Park (1993) - good movie, been a long time for most.
Godzilla Vs the Smog Monster (1971) - rich, dark, psychedelic Godzilla film, just read it's Roger Ebert's fav G film.
Monsters (2010) - film won Gareth Edwards directorial dibs on Godzilla2014
Gamera 3: The Revenge of Iris (1999) - 91% rottentomatoes, good FX & story

What does Nippon version mean?
I myself have not yet seen either of those films, I am not sure if I own them. I do think I own Killer Shrews. So far, we have been using imeetings. There is video/audio component. If you at least have the equipment, you are able to use live chat (like a chatroom). There is a delay for the speaking part. It seems like the program crashes alot though and I have only been on with me and ChronoGrl, so not sure how it works with more than two people practically speaking.
I have seen Tarntula, but it has been a while, I need to watch it again.
Of all the others, the only one I have actually seen is Jurassic Park, which I absolutely loved (do not consider it horror at all though). Clearly, I need to watch more monster movies.
And, to clarify, ChronoGrl is not actually doing this, this is just a suggestion for next year.

I think Nippon version = Japanese version, maybe? (or maybe the original version?)
I like to pretend to know stuff. ::wink::
I love the idea of doing another Giant Monster week - the hubby loves them and we own quite a few (Giant Leeches and Killer Shrews I know off the top of my head)...

Yes, he means the original Japanese version, titled Gojira. There are no American characters, and it's really a much more atmospheric and foreboding film. Those who haven't seen it, really should make time for it. It's an important piece of post war filmmaking.

I picked a movie from the list per week. I try to watch a movie or two a week. But I'm behind on TV shows too. I think I'll schedule next year better so I can watch a horror movie every other night or something in October. Plus I was looking to see what movies are on cable and saw that Encore has what seems to be all the Hellraiser movies up. I've only seen the first and I barely remember it. I saw the original Prom Night on too. I've never seen that one. So my schedule from the list will be:
Night of the Living Dead - This one is always on demand.
Halloween (original) - I always watch this on the 31st but it never gets old.
The Haunting - I want to see this again. I'll try to find it.
Evil Dead II - I've never seen this one and have only seen the Evil Dead remake. So I'm going to make an attempt on Evil Dead I & II this Halloween.
Add in those Hellraiser movies and Prom Night probably on weekends.
