According to prosecutors, on Saturday morning, Morgan E. Geyser and Anissa E. Weier, both 12, from southeastern Wisconsin stabbed their 12-year-old friend 19 times.
One of the girls told detectives that they were trying to become “proxies” of Slender Man, a popular creepy internet meme regularly written about online.
...
The “Slender Man” myth was started in 2009 on the website Something Awful. It was originally a game to insert creepy monsters into the backgrounds of photos.
It’s gone on to inspire thousands of videos on YouTube and several video games. The idea is that he’s a faceless man with tentacle arms who kidnaps children.

Really glad that the cyclist was at the right place on right time and the brutally stabbed such victim is in stable condition now. It's really sad & disturbing! They're only 12-yr old...OMG!!! Probably it's because of that particular state law but bit surprised to see they are both charged as adults. But unarguably, they deserved whatever the consequences the court's going to decide for them.

They're being charged as adults because of the severity of the crime, and the fact that it was planned.

This is insane 12yr olds should know better. Also why weren't the parents watching the kids? Hopefully time teaches them a lesson.

I was flipping through TV channels and I caught Nancy Grace making a big deal about Slenderman. I thought it was a joke.

Very, very tragic!
I don't think the Slenderman "myth" can be blamed, though... there were myths before video games and horror movies even existed. These kids would have been disturbed no matter what, and if Slenderman hadn't been the excuse, it would have been something else.

Does your use of quotations suggest you have knowledge slenderman might be real? There goes my night of sleep

I am happy that the girl that was stabbed survived. This is really troubling and there was clearly something not right with those two girls. Some have suggested that this is why children should not have access to this kind of stuff, which I find ridiculous. That is just a scapegoat and they will probably read it or watch it and so forth anyway. I was waiting for a bunch of people to rail against violent video games or horror movies or whatever else. Luckily, when I watched the news they actually had a psychologist who disagreed with those people, which is good because scapegoating like that really angers me. Anyone who does something like this clearly has something wrong with them.

Today, it was announced on the news...
A 13 year old girl stabbed her mother repeatedly over something SlenderMan related.
Nice child-rearing there!

I've been watching a lot of these Creepypasta's lately and their indeed creepy but these 12 years old should know better than to do this to someone. This is tragic indeed and it's horrible how influenced kids are these days. They see a video and go off and do this; but than again not all kids will go out and do this and I'm aware of this. However some children need to be monitored on their computers to prevent such tragedies from happening. =(

Two girls accused of stabbing a friend to impress the fictional Internet bogeyman Slenderman have been found competent to stand trial.
The decision came out of a Wisconsin courtroom Thursday, Waukesha County Circuit Court reporter Kathy Fus told CNN.
Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged with attempted murder after authorities say they stabbed their classmate 19 times in May. All three were 12 at the time.
The suspects allegedly left the victim to crawl to her own rescue. She was taken to a hospital after a passing bicyclist found her.

It's not solely the internet that does this. Those girls had to have some sort of mental disorder because no sane person would do that.

Wow...
Slender Man stabbing: Wisconsin girls must be tried as adults, judge says
Two Wisconsin girls accused of repeatedly stabbing a classmate to please an imaginary internet monster named Slender Man must stand trial as adults, a judge ruled on Friday.
Waukesha County Circuit judge Michael Bohren spent a month deliberating over the evidence provided during a two-day preliminary trial last month before deciding that the girls should be charged with first-degree murder in adult court.
Under Wisconsin law, suspects at least 10 years of age must be charged as adults in severe crimes. Defense lawyers argued that the girls legitimately believed Slender Man was going to harm their families if they didn’t kill their classmate. As a result, they argued, the girls should instead be charged with second-degree murder, which can be tried in juvenile court.
