Good list. Alien is particularly strong pick. It's tough for me not to list Alien and Evil Dead II (II for me). In many ways they're better picks than TCM and Frank.

Oh man - I'm struggling with the difference between BEST and FAVORITE - I have quite a few favorite horror movies that I wouldn't necessarily consider the best of all time... Hmmmmmmm - Off the top of my head the only way I can really separate out BEST is to give each day a theme...

Day 1 - Vampires: Nosferatu - Definitely a movie that every horror viewer should see at some point. I think it's so important for the genre.
Day 2 - Hitchcock: Psycho (Birds is a runner up)
Day 3 - Zombies: Night of the Living Dead (Zombie II is a runner up)
Day 4 - Demonic Possession: The Exorcist
Day 5 - Slashers: Halloween (Black Christmas is a runner up)
Day 6 - Haunted House/Monsters: Alien
Day 7 - Found Footage/Witch Craft: Blair Witch Project


That was really difficult - If I were going with Movies I Would Watch In The Next Seven Days, it would probably look like this - A mix of favorites/movies that I haven't seen in a while.

Cabin in the Woods (because this movie is infinitely rewatchable for me)
Inside (because it's been a LONG TIME since I've seen it)
The Descent (favorite of mine)
Evil Dead II (because, well, Evil Dead II)
Blair Witch Project (favorite)
Grave Encounters (because I've been wanting to rewatch it lately)
Ringu (because it's been a while and it's a damn good movie)

I think this is the most unusual Best list I've ever seen. I see you really like what I might call 'the nightmare/chaos' films (Beyond, Suspiria, Inferno) where things sometimes don't make sense.

It is tough. I think you have a great list. All yours would be in my Top 10 except Blair. For me the Best films have impressed me every time I've seen them. So I don't count much for "landmark" films, many of which can be marginal when the pomp is removed. I wouldn't mind picking 7 from the same genre either.

The first 20 mins of When Stranger Calls is excellent. Interesting... I found out the first 20 mins comes directly from the short film The Sitter. The rest of Stranger I found rather boring. I'll have to see Dead Silence, it looks good, though it has some horrible reviews.

I agree with Straker. Liked your first list better. ::big grin:: Nosferatu is brilliant, the visuals really impressed me, but I don't think it stands up as well with the best talkies. Elm St would probably be in my Top 10. I'm a lifelong Godzilla fan, but having watch Gojira twice, I say, it's brutal to watch in full... in the sense the long foreboding sequences fill one with despair, it's not fun to watch. I always have fun watching Thing From Another World, but I think Creature From the Black Lagoon is really rather plodding and uninspiring.

Now you've got me thinking about my Top Ten list. I'm gonna have to think about what my actual all time favorites are. I love Gojira, i can say without hesitation that it is my favorite horror and favorite movie of all time. It's not a fun movie, it's not supposed to be. It's a dark, bleak monster movie that is representative of the Japanese fears caused by the bombs dropped on Hiroshima. It is sad, and scary which in my opinion make the best horror movies.

I also really like Creature From The Black Lagoon. I am of course partial to monster movies and i just found this one very well done. Along with movies like Gojira, Rodan, and Frankenstein, Creature had a lot of drama and heart mixed in making the monster more then just a special effect and an actual character.

Giant Monster Day is much better than Found Footage day. Unless you combine the two and watch Cloverfield.

Changeling and Phibes are excellent. You should really check them out.

I'm a huge Fulci and Argento fan so I picked what I consider to be the best of their horror. You're right I guess I love nightmare/chaos films they have great atmosphere with a great sense of dread and foreboding. It was a tough call between The House By The Cemetary and Zombie 2 though.

Last time I saw it, I was a kid. But to this day, there's no movie quite like Phibes. As I recall, the lighting is bright, like many Hammer films. These days, horror films always seem to go very dark in lighting, which isn't surprising.

Saw Frankenstein 31 the other night. The beginning is fantastic. Great directing and acting, the sets and tesla coils/tech and sounds are great. The last half isn't as interesting. Still in my top 20, but hard to say about Top 7.

Saw TCSM a few nights ago. The directing is more impressive than I remember. Hooper has so many moving (camera moving L/R) shots that I didn't notice before. It's certainly horrifying. Did I "like it"? Not as much this time. It's a horrible film, in the sense it's a horrible subject: not much depth, the girl escapes, but the bad guys don't lose and the good guy doesn't win. It's an effective horror film, no doubt. Top 7 for me? Not sure.

I might replace Frankenstein 31 and TCSM... I might be more certain with the top quality of this list.
